What on Earth is "Windows mindset" ?

Quote:

"I have difficulty using the school computers as I have to change to 'windows mode' mentally, instead of Gnome mode. Loving Gnome, great interface."

What on Earth does "Windows mindset" mean? Is it some kind of a disease? Really, people, come on....I have met more Windows power users so far then I will meet UNIX power users in my entire life. Ever heard of a "UNIX zealot" stereotype? Guy in his 30's, beard & glasses? Yep, those guys sure now their way around vt102. How many have you seen lately? The most common situation I see in an average Linux user today is that the guy knows how to compile a kernel, but needs to read the man page to create an archive using the tar command. It's quite sad, really.

Please, if you intend to use "alternative" operating systems (LOL! alternative to WHAT? AROS? QNX? It's not alternative, it IS an OS, dudes), at least invest some time to learn your way around them. Give it some time & effort (REAL effort). After all, you didn't learn your way around Windows in a couple of days.

And the part considering "Loving Gnome, great interface."? Try them all. Don't claim it's good just because it's different then Windows UI. After using KDE for a while, try using Gnome and see if you still like it. Either way, there is only one final result: you'll end up using WindowMaker. Trust me bigsmile

"Just switched from Vista to Ubuntu...everything's so snappy"... yeah right. NOT.

It's so snappy...NOT. At least not for me. Allthough i have not had Vista for a long time (around 1 week, to be exact), it wasn't incredibly fast, but that didn't bother me. What bothers me is the fact everybody is comparing Vista & Ubuntu/Fedora/whatever. It's not even remotely similar, how can you compare that?

Performance wise, both my Slackware boxes are snappy as win2k would be if i was running it. Not more, not less. It will always be in the range of Windows XP/2k. There's no need in claiming it's "superfast". Fast systems are *BSD's, Linux users have the privilege of visiting Youtube bigsmile (kidding)

Why do Ubuntu people care?

Honestly, why do Ubuntu users care? Everytime i browse ubuntu forums, i find people bashing something because "Windows users that boot Ubuntu CD will not like it". I mean, sure Ubuntu is self-proclaimed "Linux for human beeings", but it is still not about Windows.

Free software & everything aside, it is Linux, it works like Linux, smells like Linux and shuts down like Linux. It is not Windows, and that will not change. I believe that it should also work like Linux, not like Windows. Let people work on developing things that they like, not things that are necessary in Windows. After all, it IS called LINUX for human beeings, so all this "Windows users friendlieness" is just a bonus, not a feature. It should be easy enough to use as it is now, there is no need to over-simplify some things.

Mac OS X vs. Windows Vista vs. FreeBSD vs. Something

I have been browsing for a wallpaper on Deviantart and ran into this :

While it is funny, it still annoys me. Mac users vs PC users, Linux vs Windows, Firefox vs Debian, OS X vs FreeBSD...there is a lot of that "out there". While some of this things are legitimate (such as Firefox vs Debian, there has been quite a discussion behind the rebranding of FFox in Debian), some are just...insane.

Linux vs Windows? I prefer linux, as i understand how it works and what i can 'kill -9'. I still keep Windows around, for my college work and DotA (yep, it works under wine, i know. but it is still more native to Windows, so why wouldn't i play it the way it was meant to be played). Once you get a better understanding of the way linux works, it is actually quite easy to work with.

Mac OS X vs FreeBSD/any BSD? BSD. I simply don't like OS X. Sorry. BSD's are mostly dead simple and well documented. But that's just my opinion, there are a lot of people that like Apple.

For me, it is simple. Go Slackware for a year. Once you know how everything works, what dependancies are all about, switch to something you can easily maintain. I went Ubuntu.

Anyway, it is all about choices. Use whatever you like, as long as you can fix it and understand how it works. If you choose OS X, have phun. At least, it does not require you to have a lot of knowledge about the way it works, it just works. If you like Ubuntu, good for you. After all, it's your computer, your operating system, and you work with it. Just do not say it is better than all others. It is just an OS, not the work of God.
