It seems I have fallen in love with the mobile browser! I was at the Soul Shop (a small resto near abs-cbn) yesterday and met some friends for some small chit chat when I noticed that the area has free wifi access. Since I didn't bring my laptop I told myself "maybe next time I'll bring it". Then I remembered my
Nokia E61 can do wlan so I pulled it out and checked email via
Opera Mobile and even did some RSS.
Soon after we had some light dinner, I offered to pay the bill but I didn't have enough cash on hand but I have my credit card. However, I didn't know how much credit I had left because I made a huge puchase a few weeks ago which has yet to be settled before the end of the month. I could have called my card company but that would be a hassle; I could have done an SMS inquiry but I couldn't remember the query strings and the number to send.
But I have web access and a complete web browser so I could inquire online!
So that's what I did, opened up Opera Mobile, went to my card's website and did my online inquiry. In less than 5 minutes I knew I could still treat my friends which I did.
Thank you Opera for making my online life easier!

I didn't know what I did but for some reason, I'm spotlighted (probably lasts for a week) in the
community homepage. Cool!
Today I had the chance to try out the Nintendo DS Browser in a coffee shop offering paid wifi access. To add the settings, I just used a different cartridge to add the router then plugged in the DS Browser card and it just worked.
As expected, there's no significant change in the speed of the browser even with a higher internet bandwidth; but still acceptable for quick email checks and catching up on blogs. For those people and publications trolling about the browser, look elsewhere; obviously you haven't used the thing in-depth.
As for added features for the EU release, I doubt it, nor would it warrant changes for a US release; it doesn't make sense. Either make a new card that has Opera 9 and pull back all unsold cards make it all standard for all existing regions (including lang packs i guess).

After waiting for a few days for it to be delivered, it is finally in my hands! Unfortunately, the DS is with my brother so I haven't tested it yet, but will do so this weekend.

I just read a
good preview of the DS browser from
organicchunkysalsa and from the looks of it, the browser would be part of my "must-buy" DS items when it comes out. At home, we have very limited space and we don't have the budget for a new laptop so having the DS connected online would be great for my wife and to my daughter even. I think it would be a great way to introduce the Internet to my 4 year old daughter and she's already well-versed on how to use the DS so it shouldn't be an issue for her.
Come to think of it, I didn't have access to such technologies when I was at her age!
There was also some
weird feedback on having
Opera easily installable in Ubuntu via a partnership with
Canonical Ltd. While I'm all for free software,
I'm also for end-user choice. Choice is one of the essential cornerstones of freedom so anything that tries to curb choice tries to lessen our freedom.
I could say that Opera is one of the few non-free applications that I like using and hope for the day when it truly becomes free. But for now, I'm still enjoying it despite its non-free nature.

So I've been enjoying my Nintendo DS lately and bought a couple of games. They may not appeal for most gamers but for my age, I'm really enjoying them more than the rather "mainstream" game genres:

Brain Age - I just can't get enough of the Head Count and Low to High tests!

Tetris DS - Playing this on the Wi-Fi connection just makes this traditional puzzle even more fun!

New Super Mario Bros. - A certified classic made even better! The fluidity of the characters are amazing.
What I'm really plannig to grab in the near future is the
Opera web browser card and
Final Fantasy III!

It seems I couldn't install the latest version of Opera in the upcoming Ubuntu 6.06 release. Even if I download the static deb, then trying to install it with gedebi, I still get a dependency error on xlibs and xlibgc6, both of which I could not find in the archives. So that's the reason why I haven't been using Opera in Ubuntu 6.06 yet.
