My motivation is that I like doing math just as others like to run or climb a mountain, or whatever. What's the book about? ( As I understand it now ) I would say that the book explains the Lie groups in this table ( on Wikepedia ). That doesn't mean that I understand what a Lie group is. The Dihedral Group is the symmetry group of an n-gon. D3 is the symmetry group of a triangle and has six elements. The transformation matrices for the rotations and reflections of the triangle are a two dimensional representation of D3. A circle is in a sense an n-gon with n infinitely large. ( I think that...) the symmetry group for a circle must be a Lie group, I don't know which one yet of course.
