Trends are fashionable and stylish.
They get fanatics and followers moving at the same rhythm with the changing times that are filled with fun, style and personality, and livelihood. Although, tracking down a trendsetter is a rocket science of its own in a rural area (well, more like finding a needle in a haystack really), they catch on like a notorius episode of bird flu.
Let's zoom in...
I bring you, perhaps, the biggest trends to hit Burgerfort and its subsequent surrounding areas' social stages such as Driekop, Mooihoek, Praktiseer, Ga-Maroga, Diphale, and so much on...
(1) Starting with the year 2010, this year featured South Africa's own popular social networking app; Mxit.
Along side plastic school book cases, personally engineered by students to carry not just books but music players of all miniature sorts. When walking with friends after school the trender would have ear-soothing jams on the way as he heads to his hood.
(2) The 2011 trend
This year ushered in a type of dress style where a dresser (usually a student but any youngster) would put on skinny trouser pants, flat shoes, a tighter shirt or t-shirt with a tie, and rock it like he's suppose to. Of which this trend caught on and it was made famous by the "Isikhothani" (some guys who live in the townships and burn cash money for fun and party like tomorrow is armageddon) into the following year of 2012.
(3) The 2012 trends
These are super trends, including the habit of owning and using two mobiles phones at the same time, having the infectious apps Whatsapp, facebook, twitter, etc and the so-called color-blocking dress trend. In colour-blocking the wearer puts on clothes that says I'm a rainbow, I can match clothes, I'm colorful and I love the spotlight. It caught on even into the 2013 trend year. And it is still spreading.
One of the reasons why it so popular is because people love the spotlight and it gives them a sense of fitting in and popularity. It is a colourful sight to have.
The internet social community trend it wasn't as big in the Burgerfort, Steelpoort, Moroke, Maandagshoek regions as it were globally until 2012 - but because it is a trend it vibrates to other parts of the country quickly.
(4) The 2013 trends and counting...
Skinny jeans, hip hop style caps, hand bands, touch screen mobile devices and a lot more. These trends say one thing: "out with the old in with the new."
