Joe Gande - BUT FIRST....THIS SONG  (The Godsend Sessions):  Every once in  a while I run across a rocker that I just can't take my ears off of... Joe's finely crafted high-energy CD tunes, vocal and guitar skills far exceed the "average band" these days - in fact, cuts like "Can't See My Life" take me back to my earliest experiences with bands that made the heart soar.  It's really nice to hear such strong talent in today's (often) diluted energy field... none of that on Gande's efforts, to be sure!  There is a superb taste of the unique on tunes like "Lost Her Head", though I would have preferred it be a bit longer than 3:44 (especially that funky/dow-un bass line that's drivin' it).  The tune that gets my vote as favorite on this set of songs, though, is the 6:08 "Godsend"... artist names runnin' through my head like Joe Cocker (for the vocals) & Robin Trower as I listen to the swirlingly cosmic guitar lines at about 3:00; absolute KILLER rock with the kind of punch that will drive you straight into the edges of the oblivion you've been seeking all these many years!  This is more than just being "impressed" - I'm inspired by Joe's excellent music, & give him my MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, especially for listeners whose roots reach out of the "normal jazz mode" into the kind of stellar energies that drive the universe.  He gets an "EQ" (energy quotient) rating of 4.98, too.  Get more information & listen to the streams at www.reverbnation.com/joegande#   ...Rotcod Zzaj

Cloudleader writes: .rD Zzaj Your Issue # 84 was the only hit I could get on Beth Jackson whom I heard a couple of weeks ago at a free concert at Lowe Mill Dock in HSV. She was in the audience to hear Keith Taylor (keyboard) and Kenny Watters on you-know-what. She got up to sing three numbers “Summertime” and I can’t remember the others, except for the fact that her Summertime was equal to Ella live whom I heard in Seattle a while back. She told me she had not sung in ~25 years, having moved to St Pete and running an eatery of some sort. Couldn’t prove it by me. I loved her swing/scat style and remarked that I’d just died and gone to heaven. The web hit did put me onto Karen Johns, whom you likened to Beth and who evidently gave a City Lights concert last summer at Burritt Museum on the Mountain. Wish I had heard her. Love this kind of vocals. Way too sparse hereabouts. Occasional visits from Miss Tess and Christabel & the Jons will have to do. I see from Johns’ web site that she lives south of Nashville and is a member of the Tennessee Valley Jazz Society here in HSV. No 2010 tour dates are given, maybe will find some. Beth said she is coming back this summer to do some recording in Guntersville with folks I don’t know. I hope she will make more appearances here in HuntsVegas. Also, the Kaffeeklatsch is still presenting live music. I won’t go there until they outlaw smoking in such establishments. Microwave Dave & the Nukes are regulars at the “klatsch. If you did not write the reference issue, then never mind. Otherwise, thanks for the lead to Johns. I’ll scare up some of her albums. I believe Beth did record some vinyl or tape with her ex, but I don’t know how I’d find it. I’d drive to Nashville to hear such good talent, but not Hawaii. Bob Palik 256-726-6403
