Did they actually say they didn't want chiefs face to be shown? As far as I am aware they only never shown it because they wanted people to put themselves in his shoes, and that's why he didn't have so much dialogue in the earlier games. Since Bungie is no longer making the halo series, i think 343i can do whatever they want. Plus only his eyes were shown, after you beat it on legendary. Also isn't his face described pretty damn well in the books? Frank O'Connor, formerly of bungie, but moving onto working with Ms with halo, and now franchise development director has stated that if you go to a police sketch artist with the description everyone has of John you would get an accurate representation of what he looks like, "that police sketch artist would then produce a perfectly accurate rendering of an older man, almost painfully pale, almost albino white, with pale blue eyes, reddish hair, close cropped to a skin head, and maybe the last remnants of freckles he had when he was a kid." With that said, since they are moving onto a more personal story with this new trilogy I think showing the eyes was a fantastic touch. It wasn't enough to know exactly what he looked like, and since the eyes are the windows to the soul seeing them at the end can really show you how much has gone on with him as a character. You can really tell he has been through some fucked up shit.
