Friend of the Band

,

This is one of the best memes I've seen in awhile, straight from The Jode, who is the arbiter of cool... So without further ado, and so you can be as cool as Jodi even sooner, here's what ya do:

Generate a fake band and its first album:

1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first article title on the page is the name of your band.

2. http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four words of the very last quote is the title of your album.

3. http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/
The third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

My band, my album cover:

A Birthday Wish for an Old {{Cough}} Friend!

, , ,

Tomorrow is my friend David's birthday. We won't say how old he is, but he certainly is old enough to do just about anything he wants! Whether it's illegal, immoral or fattening, all I can say to my friend, David, is Let your conscience be your guide, dude! .. and then get the heck out of the way!

Happy Birthday!

I dag er det din fødelsedag
Hurra, hurra, hurra!
Du sikkert dig en gave får,
som du ønsket dig i år,
og dejlig chokolade med kager til.

English translation:

Today it is your birthday
Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!
You've assured yourself a present
that you have wished for this year
with lovely (hot) chocolate and cakes to go with!

And here's a little something to listen to while you sip that chocolate and scarf that cake!

His Name's the Teacher

, ,

Congratulations to my friend, David, who passed his exams and has a new job as a teacher (and a Mac book to boot!). Way to go, David. Here's a little something for you. Now, bear in mind about this video clip several things. It starts out like it's going to slam the teaching profession. But it doesn't. Taylor Mali is a high school teacher and poetry slam artist. Ignore the annoying laugh and you are in for a real treat!

Interview With a Friend

, ,

There's a great1 interview of my main man and partner in crime and web design in the People section of the My Opera front page. I owe the fact that I met this wonderful, intelligent and exceptionally talented young man to this dude, who dragged me, kicking and screaming to the My Opera community in September 2005 so I could redesign his Opera blog. The rest, as they say, is history. I've now got a soulmate and a phenomenal web design partner. And one more person in my life whom I can make miserable. :-)

______
1 And it's not because I conducted the interview either; it's purely about the subject matter, because when you have good subject matter, how can you go wrong?

Blogathon 2006

, , ,

Come on folks. The Blogathon has already started for most of the world, but there is an alternate schedule for those observing the Jewish sabbat. So.. there's still time to open those wallets, raid your sofa cushions, scour the floorboards of your car and grab that coffee can from the top shelf in the garage. Trisha and I will be blogging starting at midnight (her) or 11:00PM (me) tonight, for 24 hours, through midnight/11:00PM Sunday night, all to benefit the United Cerebral Palsy Foundation. So .. sponsor us!. Carry on.

Easter Eggs

, , , ...

My recent post on friendship caused me to think about all the friends I've made here on the OC. Not just people who are on my "Friends" list or blogroll. But people who I can talk to, whose opinions I value, who have reached out their hand in friendship to me from the moment I landed here. To those folks, here's a little something from me to you. And if you believe, "Happy Easter!" If not, "Thanks for being a friend!"

Zenya ... your music posts inspire and calm and comfort. This song also does that for me. Hope you feel the same way.
I Am Your Angel, Celine Dion.

Scott ... you have a talent beyond measure in your artwork and in your thoughts. This song, to me, captures that spirit. Never let the flame die, friend!
What The World Needs Now, Dionne Warwick.

Ivan ... What can I say, dawg? You are the glue that holds this place together. I wish you health, happiness and love. And may the underdogs of the world, whose causes you are always tirelessly championing, prevail!
Hero, Mariah Carey.

Allan ... What a great inspiration you have been to me. Your photographs capture the soul, your words inspire, haunt, delight. You have a love for life that is contagious! This one's for you and the Missus!
True Romance, Chris Isaak.

Sarah Bell ... Fiesty, funny, thoughtful, temperamental, moody mama! Texas gal! Okay, here you go!
When I Die, Tanya Tucker.

Richard ... You've hung on through that roller coaster ride, dude. What can I say? You are truly an inspiration to me.
Life Is a Highway, Tom Cochrane.

Leazz ... Your story touched my heart the minute I first read it. You were given a special gift, in the form of a special friendship and love. It was taken from you too soon. But you've turned that tragedy around into a positve life force. I see it every day when I read your blog. Keep believing, keep loving!
I Hope You Dance, Lee Ann Womack.

Dave ... The few, the proud, the Dave. You have a finely honed awareness of others. (No one else noticed the coming and going of my photo; or at least thought to mention it.) Great blog, guy. Keep it up! Hope this song brings back good memories!
Magic Carpet Ride, Steppenwolf.

Louis ... You have been going through the same thing I have lately. Fortunately for both of us, the light at the end of the tunnel is NOT a train! Keep the faith! It will get better!
Keep On Moving, Five.

Pimp Your Blog, You Mac-Daddies!

Okay, Here's the Original Entry!

A blogger's stock in trade, his currency, is blog traffic. Visitors to his blog. How do you attract new visitors to your blog? Well, you have to get yourself noticed. There are several good opportunities to do this -- to get yourself noticed AND drive traffic to your site. An added bonus is you might discover a blog you didn't know about before. How cool is that?

Participate in the Weekly Opera Spotlight

My Opera Spotlights is in audience participation mode now. While you surf each week, keep your eye out for interesting, humorous, informative blog entries. Submit them to be spotlighted each week. You'll get honorable mention for recommending the entry and help another blogger get noticed. It's a win-win situation.

Participate in the Weekly Blog Carnival

This is almost the flip side of the weekly Spotlight, which captures new and interesting posts. The Blog Carnival prefers to call attention to older posts that have rolled off the front page. In addition, it is theme oriented (new theme each week) and travels from blog to blog, just like a carnival. This week, the topic is Student Life. So dig deep into your archives if you have posts that fit that topic. Or be on the lookout for posts that fit. Or if you prefer, offer to host a blog carnival. Read more about it here.

See you 'round the OC!

I managed to salvage the original comments from Google's cache.

Opera Blog Carnival, Week 2

, ,

This week's blog carnival is all about student life. We've had a couple of submissions, but the hosting blogger is a college student herself. (She'll have the Blog Carnival up and running tomorrow -- just as soon as she recovers from Spring Break!). Until then, enjoy these selections:

Sykora has a thing or two to say about students who can't think. He also takes a look at graded papers gone wild!

David is studying engineering AND Chinese!

Anim writes about starting a new life at college.

LipBomb laments the end of school.

Sentient is a student alone with his thoughts on a winter Saturday afternoon.

My God Is Your Gun has an eloquent student essay which is told in the form of a poem.

LauraLoiuse laments student loans.

Opera Student Task Force talks about life at Opera.

Next Week: Carnival of Art. Dig out your posts about art or artists and get them to me by the end of the day Thursday, April 13!

Roll the Credits!

, ,

Because this blog just rolled over 50,000 hits, I thought this would be an appropriate time to give mad props to the people here at the OC (and elsewhere) who have inspired and encouraged me, and without whose support and friendship this travesty to online journaling would not even have been possible.

I'm no stranger to blogging. I started a Blogger blog at http://compassnet.com/~rojo/blog/ back in June 2002. From there, I experimented with the then-fairly new and popular GreyMatter. However, in no short order, GreyMatter ran amok on my small, locally owned web host's servers. I was asked (nicely) to remove the offending program or face account cancellation. I then decided to get my own domain and robust web hosting and set up a MovableType blog at http://jonielectric.com. That was in July 2002. I kept that blog and updated it fairly regularly. Then I let the domain lapse after two years, and started blogging -- this time using WordPress -- at my primary domain, http://jonimueller.com.

That didn't last long. I thought my blog should have its own cool rocking domain and although it had seemed like a good idea at the time, the domain jonielectric.com sounded kinda cheesy to me. During 2003 and 2004, blogging was sporadic as by that time Robert had become paralyzed and little time seemed to be available to blog. I mostly focused on incessant design changes and precious little content.

But in May 2005, I set up a WordPress blog at http://babygotblog.com, hoping the snazzy new digs and domain name would inspire. They did to some extent, and I enjoyed working with WordPress and its vast array of plugins and other features. But there wasn't any satisfaction in it. My self-imposed hiatuses in 2003 and 2004 meant that people weren't visiting me. Well, I did have a core group of three fans (two fan-girls and one fan-boy).

My fan-boy (he'll remain nameless; he knows who he is) followed me through all the design and domain changes and approached me to design a theme for him on his Opera blog, so I was happy to oblige. I had to set up a test blog of course, which is this blog. That was in September. Not sure what caused this to happen, but for some reason, I just started using the blog for "real" posts. Continuing to cross post at my newest domain, http://joniverse.com (still running WordPress). But after awhile, I quit cross posting to the "real" blog. Last post there, as you can see, was February 24, 2006. Over a month ago.

Why? I'm not sure, but I think it has a lot to do with the sense of real community that I feel here. Without exception everyone I've encountered here has reached out a hand in friendship, encouraged me and supported me. The network of friends I've made here is invaluable to me. So let me end this ... it's starting to sound like a really long and boring Oscar acceptance speech anyway ... by thanking those who, for me, are instrumental in my being here at all.

Words aren't enough, my dear friends, but they are all I have:

Troels
Troels' blog, Walk In Beauty, has been a source of personal inspiration to me. It's almost uncanny the way that Troels seems to divine exactly what is troubling me and then next thing you know, BAM!, there's this beautiful, thoughtful, eloquent post on exactly that thing that was plaguing me. As I told him once, people pay hundreds of dollars an hour for the wisdom that is dispensed on Troels' blog free of charge. Hope this doesn't mean he slaps a tip jar up there, although I'd hit it often! Pas paa, dear friend!

SerbianFighter
Ivan is a friend, confidant and partner in crime and web design. His tireless efforts on behalf of the Opera Community continue to inspire and amaze me. And he's been a real friend, through thick and thin. I owe my sanity to you, Ivan, what's left of it! Peace out, dawg, and vidimo se kasnije, moj prijatelj.

Zenya
Eve was the first person who reached out to me when my bags landed here in the OC. I spent Christmas Day 2005, waiting for my pork roast to be done, while helping Eve with her blog's design. She reminded me once again of the sheer pleasure of giving for its own sake. I have been rewarded in spades. Dear Eve, your price is far above rubies! In peace, sistah!

Ricewood
Allan has also been a source of inspiration and calm reflection. He's talked me down from the ledge on a few occasions. And although I took a stab at it, I fear undskyld, jeg taler ikke dansk. But I tried!

Trisha
Trisha is not an active blogger on the OC, but she's been my buddy for awhile and is the better half of the Idiot Girls' Action Adventure Club II. Thanks for being there. Nice to know someone "gets" me!
