What Went Wrong? Army Has Some 'Splaining to Do...

The Houston Chronicle reports here that an Army sergeant, a two-time war veteran, participating in a solo field exercise with over 300 other soldiers, became lost, overcome by dehydration and the effects of South Texas' scorching heat, despite his repeated calls for help to his superiors.

A medic told investigators he suggested the exercise be stopped because of the mounting casualties. But he said he was told that only 10 minutes remained in the exercise, that only one soldier was missing and that such a decision would result in too much paperwork.

Too much paperwork? Then that "1,700-page Army investigative report" prepared after the incident must have sent them right over the edge. Of course, a death certificate? Well that's just ONE piece of paper. Jesus.

The Muslims are offended again. How will I ever cope? Now, since they can't manage their own minions, they want to tell the Catholics what to do? Find a ladder and get over yourselves.

File This Under: "What the Hell Were They Thinking?"

There's apparently a new and groovy computer system in place at the Houston Municipal Court. But something went horribly, horribly wrong. What? Human nature intervened. Take people who have been doing something a certain way for 18 years and throw new technology at them and watch the devastation. It's not pretty.

City officials said Monday's performance of the computer system was better than a trial run in January. They said it could take between 30 and 90 days for the system to be at full speed.

Which begs the question, why deploy it now, then? Train them behind the scenes and roll it out in 30-90 days when all users are trained. Am I missing something here?

A Million Dollar Piece of Rope

Man Awarded $1 Million After Noose Placed on Neck

And this is the part that kills me:

"They're going to train their employees. They're going to let them know that this sort of behavior is not the sort of thing that is acceptable," Sustaita said.

Train them? That's the kind of training that should have started when these cretins were in diapers. It's a little too late now. And yep, I think the "roper" got off a little easy. We can only hope he was someone's butt boy for the short span of time he was incarcerated. But a $100 slap on the wrist? That was probably his beer money for a month. I think he should have been made to pay a pretty darn good portion of that "settlement."

I was all set to say, "Well, good!" when I read this Houston Chronicle article about a burglar who was shot dead by the homeowner. How do you explain shooting someone in the back when you are trying to defend yourself? We shall see. I just know this: If you see a house you want to burgle, and you want to know what kind of gun lives there, just climb in through a window! We shoot to kill down heah!

A Stand for Democracy

The U.S. clearly has lost sight of who is the underdog in the cartoon jihad. But Christopher Hitchens gets it right:

And there remains the question of Denmark: a small democracy, which resisted Hitler bravely and protected its Jews as well as itself. Denmark is a fellow member of NATO and a country that sends its soldiers to help in the defense and reconstruction of Iraq and Afghanistan. And what is its reward from Washington? Not a word of solidarity, but instead some creepy words of apology to those who have attacked its freedom, its trade, its citizens, and its embassies. For shame.

For shame indeed.

Stupidity Rears Its Ugly Head Again

,

I'm spitting mad over this nonsense. I briefly touched on it in my other blog. But I'm going to go to town here. I guess it's like trying to reason with a rabid dog. You just can't. These people's minds are so narrow, not one lucid, rational, logical thought has a chance of slipping through.

From this article:

Tantawi said the Danish prime minister must apologize for the drawings and further demanded that the world's religious leaders meet to write a law that 'condemns insulting any religion, including the Holy Scriptures and the prophets.' He said the United Nations should impose the law on all countries.

Uh, don't most countries already have laws against KILLING and MAIMING people? And do you see how closely those laws are being obeyed?

So now the Muslims - but one religion in a host of religions all over the world - get to dictate how everyone everywhere should behave? Behave? These arbiters of restraint and decorum? If all this violence wasn't so tragic, the whole thing would be just damn funny.

Take the Sacred Cow for example. If the Muslims have their way, wouldn't every burger joint and upscale grille be an affront to Hindus everywhere? Where do you draw the line? Try as they might, they can't make this a world wide issue. As a favorite South Texas federal judge said in one of his more mirthful opinions:

You can put a calico dress on it and call it Florence, but at the end of the day, a pig is still a pig.

If It's Tourist Season, Why Can't We Shoot Them?

Dick Cheney must have wondered the same thing. While quail hunting here in Texas, he managed to bag himself a lawyer Not just any lawyer, mind you, but "Harry Whittington, a millionaire attorney from Austin." Whittington is recuperating in a Corpus Christi hospital and is expected to recover fully from what is probably just a flesh wound. His wife witnessed the whole thing from the safety of the couple's parked car.
