Today we are washing down that turkey (ugh, a sandwich) with some fruit salad. I'd been craving that lately so I headed out to the grocery store early this morning. That's one good thing about being home during the day; usually you have the grocery store to yourself. I just buy whatever fruit I am in the mood for, cut it up and drizzle just a slight bit of honey over it, toss it and let it sit in the refrigerator for about half an hour until it's chilled. Regarding the honey, that's a tip from an ex-boss of mine, from Cairo. That's how they serve fresh fruit there. And you don't want to overdo it with the honey, just enough to make it slightly sweet. The fruit makes its own juice as it sits.
How many fruits can you identify in the photo below? (Not all of them are in the shot, but see below for a list.)

holidays, food, pixtures
Thanksgiving.. make.. turkey quesadillas. There are just so many ways you can bundle up leftover turkey to be palatable a week after Thanksgiving has come and gone. I deboned the bird pretty much right away and since Robert is in the hospital right now, I froze most all of it and just kept out what I (and the cat) could eat for a few days. This is the last of the turkey.. I bought some homemade tortillas from the carniceria up the street, shredded the turkey, chopped some onion and tomato, inserted a slice of sharp cheddar cheese (monterrey jack would have been more authentic), microwaved them for 1.25 seconds, and topped with sour cream and salsa. Guacamole would be appropriate, too, but I didn't have any on hand. Still, not a bad lunch.

food
Here's what's for lunch at Mueller Hog Farm today. My easy chicken salad, served with apple slices on a bed of field greens. It's just chicken, apples, onions, cilantro, mayonnaise and Greek Seasoning. Washed down with my favorite beverage: Glaceau Vitamin Water, and the only flavor that matters: Dragonfruit.

I whipped up my favorites today: Chicken Pasta Salad and Lemon Bars. The lemon bars don't last long, needless to say, since once they're cut, there's only nine of them. The chicken pasta salad doesn't seem to be made the same way twice, but it's always good. Recipes and photos below, of course.

annoyances, just-plain-weird, food
I bought a cookie from a well known fast food establishment yesterday. I ate it at my computer desk and happened to notice, once I'd finished, that there was this warning label on the BACK of the cookie wrapper:

Cookies may have been exposed to peanut dust.
WTF? What is peanut dust and why do we need to be told about it. OMG, I'm gonna die!!
I guess they warn you because some people have peanut allergies, which can sometimes be fatal. (Thankfully, I'm not one of those sufferers.) But of course if you've already tucked into that cookie, like the pig you are, you aren't likely to turn the wrapper over and read the fine print on the back! Oy!

I've been drinking VitaminWater by Glaceau. I had noticed one of the labels on my fruit punch-flavored water and commented to a friend about the marketing genius of it, catering to the Club Crowd with this copy:
Everyone loves going out, downing cocktails and partying like a B-list celebrity, but with the glory comes the pain -- body aches, cotton mouth and a splitting headache the next day that would bring even the mighty Superman to his knees.
With that said, we loaded this product with b vitamins and potassium to help your body recover, so now you can party like it's 1999 and still wake up feeling like a million bucks. $750K if you woke up on the bathroom floor.
Now, sign me up for a job where all I had to do was come up with clever copy like that! But wait; there's more!
Power-C (dragonfruit):
Despite having the word "Dragon" in its name, no actual dragons were harmed in the making of this product. However, with 250% of the RDI of vitamin C inside, the fruit wasn't so lucky. With that said, we'd also like to inform some of you that dragons are actually imaginary. That means they don't exist. So, will you please, please, please stop sending us nasty letters. Thank you.
Formula 50 (grape):
50 cent's new album is bound to go platinum, so Formula 50 decided to go platinum too. Not to be outdone, we are happy to announce the release of our own album, "Hydrate or die tryin." All we need is one little shout-out at the MTV video music awards. Suckaz be movin' out the way at them beverage conferences. Plus, our drink has the nutrients you need to fuel you through your day. That's just how we roll here in Queens.

I wondered why my bill the other night at Spec's Liquor was close to $30 and all I had bought was some chicken salad, some pasta salad, a box of Carr's crackers, some Assam tea, and a wedge of white cheddar. Somehow, I got the chicken salad "made for a king"! Yeep!
