Men of Substance

, , ,

I've cobbled together a mini-montage of some "men of substance," men on whom you can "pinch an inch." There's nothing wrong with these guys. (In fact, I think James Gandolfini is DAMN FINE and SUPER SEX-SAY just as he is.) And here's a song to go along with the picture, Canned Heat's Big Fat, which is their version of the original Fat Man by Fats Domino. Enjoy.

P.S. And can you tell me who the other three are in the photo?

Destiny Is a Whore...

, , , ...

Or so goes the song Tuzna Pesma [Sad Song] by Serbian duo Neverne Bebe. Someone was kind enough to translate the lyrics from Serbian to English and upload the song to YouTube. Enjoy!

And here are the original lyrics, in Serbian, for those playing at home.

Rec, jedna i kraj
bol, gospodski sjaj
gazila bih duboku reku
samo da nadjem zvezdu neku
koja na tebe potseca

Zid,izmedju nas
noc, pruza mi spas
htela bih da ti zovem ime
plakala bih al' nemam s kime
ubila bih i dosta s time
znaj, ipak znaj da

Tuzna pesma na sto nacina
svetom putuje
stara slika naseg vremena
jos uvek tuguje
a kisna jutra opet pocinju
otkad sam otisla
smejem se a suze naviru
kurva sudbina

Zid,izmedju nas...

I have been privileged to have access to a vast amount of Serbian and Croatian music, some traditional and some contemporary. I love just about all of it, but my favorites are Gibonni, Zdravko Colic, Prljavo Kazaliste, Film and Neverne Bebe.

Darkness and Light

, ,

I found two music videos on YouTube recently. One is an old favorite and it never fails to put a smile on my face! And I'm definitely going to need that after listening to the other song which I just discovered today. So .. here are both videos. One guaranteed to make you smile and the other one to make you cry. I must have sat here at my desk and sobbed uncontrollably for nearly 20 minutes. Even my cat came over to see what the matter was. Sometimes, sad songs act as a catharsis, the way the air smells clean and fresh after a rainstorm, you know? And then, listening to the happy song .. everything's okay in Joniville again tonight.

Sadness and Longing...

I CRIED FOR YOU (Katie Melua)

You're beautiful so silently
It lies beneath a shade of blue
It struck me so violently
When I looked at you

But others pass, the never pause,
To feel that magic in your hand
To me you're like a wild rose
They never understand why

I cried for you
When the sky cried for you
And when you went
I became a hopeless drifter
But this life was not for you
Though I learned from you,
That beauty need only be a whisper

I'll cross the sea for a different world,
With your treasure, a secret for me to hold

In many years they may forget
This love of ours or that we met,
They may not know
how much you meant to me.

I cried for you
And the sky cried for you,
And when you went
I became a hopeless drifter.
But this life was not for you,
Though I learned from you,
That beauty need only be a whisper

Without you now I see,
How fragile the world can be
And I know you've gone away
But in my heart you'll always stay.

I cried for you
And the sky cried for you,
And when you went
I became a hopeless drifter.
But this life was not for you,
Though I learned from you,
That beauty need only be a whisper
That beauty need only be a whisper

Happiness and Renewal...

DRUNK ON LOVE (Basia)

I was dreaming when I jumped the light
Busy scaling dizzy heights
Hummed a somewhat strangely familiar tune
My eyes as wide as open books
and on my ears upon two hooks
A big smile was hanging there like a crescent moon

It sometimes comes as quite a shock
When the gods of love decide to knock
You're in a state of disarray
Just when you least expect it--you'll never know a better day

[Refrain]
Daydreaming fever taking over
No misdemeanor--stone cold sober

The officer who stopped me said
"Lucky you didn't wind up dead!"
And he guessed that I was over and above
I hoped he'd only caution me, and made a plea for clemency
On the grounds that i was only very drunk on love

[Repeat refrain]

It sometimes comes as quite a shock
When the gods of love decide to knock
You're in a state of disarray
Just when you least expect it--you'll never know a better day

Armchair Travels: Serbia

Most of you who know me would immediately know why Serbia, and specifically Belgrade, would be my first foreign travel destination. Those of you who don't: read the blog. :-)

And the song? Lyrics provided below of course! :-)

For My Friend...

, , ,

He well knows who he is....

No mountain high enough, no valley low enough, no river wide enough ... If you need me, i'll find a way. Remember, as long as my internet connection doesn't let me down, I'm just a mouse click away!

Listen, baby
Ain't no mountain high
Ain't no valley low
Ain't no river wide enough, baby

If you need me, call me
No matter where you are
No matter how far
Just call my name
I'll be there in a hurry
You don't have to worry

'Cause baby,
There ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough
Ain't no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you

Remember the day
I set you free
I told you
You could always count on me
From that day on I made a vow
I'll be there when you want me
Some way, some how

'Cause baby,
There ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough
Ain't no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you

No wind, no rain

My love is alive
Way down in my heart
Although we are miles apart
If you ever need a helping hand
I'll be there on the double
As fast as I can

Don't you know that
There ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough
Ain't no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you

[repeat]

You Are the Sun...

, , ,

You are the sun shining down on everyone
Light of the world giving light to everything I see
Beauty so brilliant I can hardly take it in
And everywhere you are is warmth and light

And I am the moon with no light of my own
Still you have made me to shine
And as I glow in this cold dark night
I know I can’t be a light unless I turn my face to you

You are the sun shining down on everyone
Light of the world giving light to everything I see
Beauty so brilliant I can hardly take it in
And everywhere you are is warmth and light

And I am the moon with no light of my own
Still you have made me to shine
And as I glow in this cold dark night
I know I can’t be a light unless I turn my face to you

Shine on me with your light
Without you I’m a cold dark stone
Shine on me, I have no light of my own
You are the sun, you are the sun, you are the sun
And I am the moon

You have made me to shine
And as I glow in this cold dark night
I know I can’t be a light unless I turn my face to you
No I will never be a light unless I turn my face to you
I will never be a light unless I turn my face to you
No I will never be a light until I turn myself to you

You are the sun shining down on everyone
Wherever you are there's warmth and light
Wherever you are there's warmth and light
Without you, without you

Sweet light of the world shining down on me
Without you, without you
Sweet light of the world shining down on me
Without you, I'm a cold dark stone
Without you, I'm a cold dark stone
Without you, I'm a cold dark stone
Without you, I'm a cold dark stone
I have no light of my own

Without you, without you I'm a cold dark stone
Without you, I'm a cold dark stone
You are the sun, you are the sun
Shining down on everyone

This Love...

, , ,

Marcus posted some sad songs and I agree with most of his selections, especially November Rain by Guns N Roses. That one never fails to bring a tear to my eye.

But This Love, by Sarah Brightman, is one of my all time, get the Kleenex out, here come the river of tears, bona fide sad songs. I don't think it's meant that way, but the combination of Sarah's haunting voice and the musical arrangement make it so. See if you don't agree.

This Love, Sarah Brightman (15.1Mb 320Kbps MP3)

This love
This love is a strange love
A faded kind of day love
This love

This love
I think I'm gonna fall again
And even when you held my hand
It didn't mean a thing
This love

This love
Never has to say love
Doesn't know it is love
This love

This love
Doesn't have to say love
Doesn't need to be love
Doesn't mean a thing

This love
This love

I've been lucky enough in my life to have received uncompromising, all encompassing, unconditional love. I've also doled it out. Once, it was reciprocated; another time it wasn't. But I think that's because the person it was focused on simply didn't realize exactly what he had. But the beauty (or madness) of that kind of love is that it doesn't matter whether it's returned or not. Because it's selfless. And that my friends doesn't come along every day.

Drug Music

Just reflecting, while I'm cleaning my hard drive off, that there are a lot of songs that talk about love, both undying and unrequited, friendship, even sex. About religion and politics. But darn few about drugs. And I don't mean songs like "I Want a New Drug," by Huey Lewis & The News, which we know is a veiled reference to love and life, not chemical substances.

But these songs leave no doubt in your mind as to their subject matter. Can you think of others?

1. Needle and the Damage Done, Neil Young

I've seen the needle and the damage done, every junky's like a setting sun....

2. Sam Stone, John Prine

Sam Stone was alone when he popped his last balloon, climbing walls while sitting in a chair....

3. Comfortably Numb, Pink Floyd

Just a little pinprick. [ping] There’ll be no more --aaaaaahhhhh! But you may feel a little sick. Can you stand up?

4. Cocaine, Jackson Brown

Heading down Scott, turning up Main, looking for that girl that sells cocaine....

5. Cocaine, J.J. Cale

If you got bad news, you want to kick them blues, cocaine....

6. Shooting Up in Vain, Eagle Eye Cherry

Down to bed as the sun goes up, body all in pain. Now the swears he's going to stop shooting up in vain....

7. CCKMP (Cocaine Cannot Kill My Pain), Steve Earle

Heroin is the only thing, the only gift the darkness brings....

8. White Rabbit, Jefferson Airplane

One pill makes you larger, and one pill makes you small. And the ones that mother gives you, don't do anything at all....

Shock the [Server] Monkey

, , , ...

Shock the monkey to life
Shock the monkey to life

Cover me when I run
Cover me through the fire
Something knocked me out' the trees
Now I'm on my knees
Cover me, darling please
Monkey, monkey, monkey
Don't you know when you're going to shock the monkey

Fox the fox
Rat the rat
You can ape the ape
I know about that
There is one thing you must be sure of
I can't take any more
Darling, don't you monkey with the monkey
Monkey, monkey, monkey
Don't you know you're going to shock the monkey

Wheels keep turning
Something's burning
Don't like it but I guess I'm learning

Shock! - watch the monkey get hurt, monkey

Cover me, when I sleep
Cover me, when I breathe
You throw your pearls before the swine
Make the monkey blind
Cover me, darling please
Monkey, monkey, monkey
Don't you know you're going to shock the monkey

Too much at stake
Ground beneath me shake
And the news is breaking

Shock! - watch the monkey get hurt, monkey

Shock the monkey
Shock the monkey
Shock the monkey to life

Silver Spring

What she said.

Time cast a spell on you...you won't forget me...
I know I could've loved you but you would not let me...

Time cast a spell on you...but you won't forget me...
(I was such a fool)
I know I could've loved you...but you would not let me...
(Give me one more chance)
I'll follow you down 'til the sound of my voice will haunt you...
(Haunt you)
You'll never get away from the sound of the woman who loves you...

~~ Lyrics by Stevie Nicks
