I've been listening to Alecia Moore (a/k/a P!nk) ever since she first arrived on the scene. I've always loved her edgy voice. Here she is in a great tribute to Janis Joplin.
And listening to Joss Stone also reminds me a bit of Janis. Now, I could have taken the easy way out and posted "Piece of My Heart," the duet she did with Melissa Etheridge. But I much prefer this song for its polish. See for yourself.
My Haroula CD came the other day! Squeeeee! I was able to locate Haris [Alexiou] II, one of her first albums, and one which I had in record/LP form when I was a teenager. I played it all the time. When I get a chance, I'll post one or two songs from the CD. Meanwhile, I'd love to get my hands on some of Zoi Papadopoulou's music. And I think it's great that two generations come together like this; Zoi has promise. Enjoy!
My Last.FM widget. He made me get an account. (And I always do everything he tells me to do.) :-P As much as I love to listen to music while I am online, it's a pretty great resource. I've discovered some new artists this way.
I've cobbled together a mini-montage of some "men of substance," men on whom you can "pinch an inch." There's nothing wrong with these guys. (In fact, I think James Gandolfini is DAMN FINE and SUPER SEX-SAY just as he is.) And here's a song to go along with the picture, Canned Heat's Big Fat, which is their version of the original Fat Man by Fats Domino. Enjoy.
P.S. And can you tell me who the other three are in the photo?
In the wee hours of the morning of October 16, 2007, near Nova Gradiska, Croatia, a bright light was extinguished. Tose Proeski, one of Southeastern Europe's rising pop stars, was killed when the vehicle he was riding in slammed into the back of a truck, killing him and injuring the car's driver and other passenger. He was only 26 years old, but had already achieved so much. In 2004 he was named a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and recorded the song "This World" which became the UNICEF anthem. In 2007 he released Igri Bez Granici (Games Without Borders) and was working on another (which is why he was travelling in Croatia).
Or so goes the song Tuzna Pesma [Sad Song] by Serbian duo Neverne Bebe. Someone was kind enough to translate the lyrics from Serbian to English and upload the song to YouTube. Enjoy!
And here are the original lyrics, in Serbian, for those playing at home.
Rec, jedna i kraj
bol, gospodski sjaj
gazila bih duboku reku
samo da nadjem zvezdu neku
koja na tebe potseca
Zid,izmedju nas
noc, pruza mi spas
htela bih da ti zovem ime
plakala bih al' nemam s kime
ubila bih i dosta s time
znaj, ipak znaj da
Tuzna pesma na sto nacina
svetom putuje
stara slika naseg vremena
jos uvek tuguje
a kisna jutra opet pocinju
otkad sam otisla
smejem se a suze naviru
kurva sudbina
Zid,izmedju nas...
I have been privileged to have access to a vast amount of Serbian and Croatian music, some traditional and some contemporary. I love just about all of it, but my favorites are Gibonni, Zdravko Colic, Prljavo Kazaliste, Film and Neverne Bebe.
I don't get into politics much on this blog; I did a few years ago on my now-defunct MT blog. But that was then. However, blog buddy Rori does. And she found this great video on YouTube (where ELSE would the great videos be?) that pretty much says it all.
And if you're wondering about the original song, it's by Gnarls Barkley, and it's here:
And if you want some statistics on the war in Irag, you'll find them below.
I found two music videos on YouTube recently. One is an old favorite and it never fails to put a smile on my face! And I'm definitely going to need that after listening to the other song which I just discovered today. So .. here are both videos. One guaranteed to make you smile and the other one to make you cry. I must have sat here at my desk and sobbed uncontrollably for nearly 20 minutes. Even my cat came over to see what the matter was. Sometimes, sad songs act as a catharsis, the way the air smells clean and fresh after a rainstorm, you know? And then, listening to the happy song .. everything's okay in Joniville again tonight.
Sadness and Longing...
I CRIED FOR YOU (Katie Melua)
You're beautiful so silently
It lies beneath a shade of blue
It struck me so violently
When I looked at you
But others pass, the never pause,
To feel that magic in your hand
To me you're like a wild rose
They never understand why
I cried for you
When the sky cried for you
And when you went
I became a hopeless drifter
But this life was not for you
Though I learned from you,
That beauty need only be a whisper
I'll cross the sea for a different world,
With your treasure, a secret for me to hold
In many years they may forget
This love of ours or that we met,
They may not know
how much you meant to me.
I cried for you
And the sky cried for you,
And when you went
I became a hopeless drifter.
But this life was not for you,
Though I learned from you,
That beauty need only be a whisper
Without you now I see,
How fragile the world can be
And I know you've gone away
But in my heart you'll always stay.
I cried for you
And the sky cried for you,
And when you went
I became a hopeless drifter.
But this life was not for you,
Though I learned from you,
That beauty need only be a whisper
That beauty need only be a whisper
Happiness and Renewal...
DRUNK ON LOVE (Basia)
I was dreaming when I jumped the light
Busy scaling dizzy heights
Hummed a somewhat strangely familiar tune
My eyes as wide as open books
and on my ears upon two hooks
A big smile was hanging there like a crescent moon
It sometimes comes as quite a shock
When the gods of love decide to knock
You're in a state of disarray
Just when you least expect it--you'll never know a better day
[Refrain]
Daydreaming fever taking over
No misdemeanor--stone cold sober
The officer who stopped me said
"Lucky you didn't wind up dead!"
And he guessed that I was over and above
I hoped he'd only caution me, and made a plea for clemency
On the grounds that i was only very drunk on love
[Repeat refrain]
It sometimes comes as quite a shock
When the gods of love decide to knock
You're in a state of disarray
Just when you least expect it--you'll never know a better day
Most of you who know me would immediately know why Serbia, and specifically Belgrade, would be my first foreign travel destination. Those of you who don't: read the blog. :-)
And the song? Lyrics provided below of course! :-)
