Are the Muslims starting to catch on that it's okay to poke fun a bit, because we Westerners enjoy free speech and freedom of the press? Do they now understand that such things can be done in the name of freedom of expression and that no one's embassy is going to be torched because someone Photoshopped (and badly I might add) this?

One can only hope. Unfortunately, I don't think the noble explanation is the correct one. Instead, it's more likely that they are just baiting, for the sake of it. That the whole time these fundamentalist Muslim clerics have been loudly complaining¹ that an apology is not enough for the "heinous" and "vicious" crime that was perpetrated on the Muslim people and their (not MY) Prophet, but that **blood** -- anyone's -- must be shed and now, these Muslims can do what amounts to the same thing and get away with it.

They will "get away with it" because the Western way works and this insanity² does not, because it doesn't have a logical leg to stand on. Does anyone know what the Islam (?) word is for "tolerance"? Anyone? Anyone?

Joni - from a neutral perspective I can say that this has nothing to do with 'religious fundamentalism' but all to do with manufacturing dissent. The cartoons and other provocative propoganda just contributes to that. The main reason USA invaded Iraq was for oil, all other reasons are just BS propoganda; to shift attention away from questions/legitamcy of war they (USA and UK) are manufacturing a negative and insulting view of muslims through media - maybe even as a stepping stone to a war with Iran, but more likely just to threaten them.
To be honest, when you appreciate how people in the Mid-east have been screwed by USA oppression, is it so surprising that some muslims decide to fight back under guise of Islam 'Jihad'? This has really little to do with religion doctrine but everything to do with USA oppression. Of course, there are gullible people out there that really believe in Islam, but the religious leaders (fundamentalists as they are called) are all about countering USA aggression.
I guess Hitler was right when he said "“Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it”. Exactly what USA are doing.

Joni, have you ever read The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam? I read it in conjunction with a book EXPLAINING Islam written by an actual muslim, to get both sides of the story.

Islam explained was sort of like people who see the face of Jesus in a pancake and start worshipping syrup. There is no mystical side of Islam. Islam is the religion of murder.

Religion today is just a powerful instrument for people in power to control others. Doesn't matter what religion, be it Christianity, Islam or Zoroastrianism, they are all in essence the same.
Whenever an educated person of average intelligence says they believe in Christian/Islam/xxxx then they are plain liars. Never trust them.
