What Was She Thinking?!

Someone hold my drink while I climb down off my soapbox.

Help-Less

,

I'm taking my CSS/HTML Help Forum down. And here's why. Now some of you may be thinking, why is she letting one person's attitude spoil it for everyone else? I don't expect anyone to kiss my ass here, but goddammit, if I'm helping you, don't slap my face. It's that simple. Life is too short, and I have too much else going on, to stress myself out over the boorishness of one person. Put another way, I won't put up with crap from paying clients; I am not going to countenance it from total strangers.

I will always help out my friends here (and you few people well know who you are), but as far as devoting time to helping with coding and design, well, I've got a web design business, so if you really want help, you can hire me. But when it stops being fun, that's when I quit doing it. The banners will still be available for download, tho, in my albums here and elsewhere, just as they have been before. I'm just taking down all the stuff that was on the forum.

Your personality really shows in your blog and your posts. Very strong minded, I mean that as a compliment. What you say about crawling through broken glass for your friends is awsome. I really just wanted to say your page design is so cool. Alittle on the femmy side for my tastes, but still very cool smile

I can understand your reasons for taking the forum down. And you are in your full right to do so. No question about that.

But if you are just a bit like me - and I´m a bit of a hothead - you just might consider this:

Who decides that you should shut down right now? Is it you - or is it the guy who´s pissed you off? Are there other options?

When I have had the consideration to ask myself that sort of questions - I have sometimes found other solutions, that I´ve been glad I did, and I have sometimes turned my back to the whole mess, which I was glad I did, too.

But I have regretted being too hasty once or twice.

I hope you don´t mind my saying so. I mean well smile

Oh my, I just looked at your forum for the first time today, and it is on the verge of extinction! I guess this is what is known as missing the boat.

I certainly sympathize with you though. The number of people who take more than they give, act discourteously, and in various ways show little regard for others in the blogosphere is alarming.

But Allan's also got a point. You are under no obligation to help those who displease you and can simply ignore them. If this jerk's actions are going to stop you doing something you really want to do, then he's won.

On the other hand, if you continue doing what you want to do and give him the old heave-ho along the way, then you've won.

But as you are running the show, it is entirely up to you & you must judge the balance between the pleasure and the hassle.

I have this thing about wasting time. There's not enough of it to go around as it is. So I try to cut my losses when I can. This seems like one of those times. As I said, my friends, who know they can count on me to help out if I can, will still ask and I will still answer. There's far too many CSS, HTML and web design resources out there. And then there's Google. To those others I say, fire up that browser (preferably Opera) and get busy!

"I have this thing about wasting time. There's not enough of it to go around as it is"...

Joni, I simply don't get it. You are waisting your time, getting pissed! Then writing about it, getting even more pissed. If you want to get pissed about everything from Nigerian spam to people just being plain stupid, then you'll waste oceans of time. I guess it's just an outlet of some kind, so maybe you're not waisting your time after all...

If you really thought you were wasting time, you just blocked the guy and thrashed the Nigerian spam. You only encourage people by answering them and writing about them, especially Nigerian (or whatever) spammers, who just love to get the information you give them by answering...

I got a mail from some lawyer like person, who said I should take down my post brain-something, because it was their trade mark! I neeeeeaaarly got pissed and neeeeaaarrrly answered them in a witty and sarcastic way, and then I cooled off and realized, it was exactly what they wanted, this was just another scam... spam, bam...

We are waisting time writing about this.

Yeah we are. But it sure made me feel better. And for that Robert and my cat (and the neighbors upstairs) probably are thankful! wink

David Blangstrupdavidcrickett Sunday, February 26, 2006 8:45:19 PM

But then I think there's either no time at all (a british physician can make the equation fit if he throws out time...) or plenty of it, oceans of time...

So now I waste time by wondering if realize is with z or s...

One sure way of wasting time is waiting on the Opera servers. There's waisting time for you! bigsmile

BTW what about "Geek by day, Legal secretary by night"? Sounds more interesting, don't you think?

Ha ha! If you knew how many computer-related questions I answer at work, and that even despite the fact that we have an in-house "Help Desk" staffed by about 10 people (two of whom actually either know vaguely what you are talking about or have sense enough to figure out where to look). On my team (Appellate), I am known as the "Queen of the Internet." smile
