Sports on television

I have had little time to follow other sports during my career. But suddenly this changed as I have decided to take it really easy for a period. These days don’t run at all, only walk in the forest with a map. I want to make sure that my body is ready for a new period of training before I start preparing for the next season. I do schoolwork, coach Annika at WOC by phone, visit old friends and follow sports on TV. So far I have enjoyed European champs in football. Now I watch Tour de France and of course WOC and wait for the Olympic Games.

I felt proud to be Dutch during European champs in fotball

EM i avslapping

Interview at Ultimate Orienteering

I got the honor of being among the first runners to be interviewed at the new international orienteering site founded by Niels-Peter Foppen. Read the article here

Impressions from training camps

It has been a while since I wrote last time. For what reason? I’ve been busy trying to get settled on Lidingö and living as a real sportsman. So far I’ve not managed to buy a flat, but the training goes on very well. Here are some pictures from my trips to Sälen and South Africa together with Annika.

Sälen:

..AND NEW CLUB!

Annika, my girlfriend, and I have been looking for a solution to our constant commuting between Uppsala and Södertälje every time we want to see each other. The goal has been to find a place to live, as well as a club that gives us the possibility for a 100 % focus on orienteering in combination with 50 % focus on work. We both intend to go on with elite orienteering until WOC in Trondheim, at least. Now it seems like we have found a perfect solution. We change to IFK Lidingö!

Lidingö is a club with many high level runners and strong traditions, especially in relays. In Södertälje Nykvarn Orientering I have learned that this is really important for the training atmosphere. But from now on extra resources will also be used for individual coaching towards international and national championships. Anna Bogren and Fredrik Löwegen will take care of elite women and elite men, respectively and Oskar Malmberg is planning the actual trainings. This sounds especially interesting and motivating to us.

In addition, new training grounds including indoor track, better organized every day life and closer contact with coaches like Anders Gärderud and Fredrik Löwegren will for sure help me become a better sportsman. I really look forward to this!

Leaving SNO is not easy. I have experienced the best moments in my orienteering career in SNO, without doubt. To me the atmosphere with runners from different countries who are all hungry for training has been totally unique. I've got many of my best friends here.

Ironically, that's why I feel sure my club mates in SNO will support me in this decision and join me for trainings even if I go to a different club in the Stockholm region. The feedback I have received from those I have spoken to so far make me understand that our relationship has made us friends for a lifetime. I am not only a lost link in the relay team.

Apart from the runners in Top Team and other friends in the club I will use this opportunity to thank a few leaders out of many in SNO for the support they have given me; Claes Göran Calander for waiting in the dark during night-o trainings, Per Molin for financial business, Henrik Skoglund for coaching the Dutch team, Tore Eklund for medical help, and Stefan Persson for evening discussions over several cups of tee which I have enjoyed very much.

My reason for moving

My other reason for moving

Back to Norway!

After two years in The Netherlands I change back to Norway. Why do I do it? The reason is obvious. I was offered a place in one of the best national teams in the world.

Good feeling

As a true Norwegian it feels like a big step to be selected for the Norwegian team. But it is not only because of some childish dream I choose to use this opportunity. The road pointed out by NOF towards WOC in 2010 seems really promising to me. I have great confidence in Björnar Valstad, new secretary-general, and Göran Andersson, new head coach. And most important of all, the atmosphere in the team feels really good right now. I already got the chance to experience this for my self in three training camps this autumn.

Picture from a “military training camp” with Team Norway. We were forced to stick together as a team and motivate each other to “survive”. Afterwards I have more respect than ever for my team companions in Norway.

Great chance

I promise to use this opportunity well. When Norway uses resources on me I feel I have a duty to give it a good try. I have already planned to do certain changes to my daily life to become a better sportsman. The challenge now will be to avoid being uncritical because I get more things served, but still try to influence factors that can help me to improve as an orienteer. I believe much of the success I achieved this year was because I did things my own way together with people I trust.

Coaching

Matthias Gilgien, who helped me a lot this year, wishes to continue what we have started.
This makes me happy. Even if I am a part of the Norwegian team I may have own personal coach. Göran will of course give inspiration and influence what I do, but most of the discussions about technical and mental training will be with Matthias.
Ín addition, Anders Gärderud will help me with season planning and running skills. I have lots of work to do on the physical part. That’s no wonder I look forward to three weeks of Africa and Anders in January together with my girlfriend, Annika.

Thank you!

Thank you Netherlands for all support, it has been really important to me. Hope we still will keep in touch, I will read www.i-ol.nl frequently.
The Netherlands running shirts will be given as presents to Henrik Skoglund, who helped me as a Dutch coach, and my three sponsors, Wettergrens Tak, Peab and FiR.

På denne måten kunne man få ekstra fölelse for å springe relevante treninger for hver disiplin uten å bli for sliten.
