From: Newport, OR
To: Humboldt Redwood State Park, Northern California
Miles: 365
MPG: 51.2
The Oregon Coast
We started the day heading down the Oregon Coast. The coastline was gorgeous, though the fog diminished the views slightly.

The real highlight of the drive (for Jon) was a quick stop at a seafaring antique shop, where Jon found some great places to pose the bird, much to the shop owners bemusement.

The shop owner’s parrot, however, was not bemused.

Redwoods National Park
A few hours later we had crossed into California and continued on to Redwoods National Park. The signs were clearly designed for morons, but they didn’t lie.

There are some very big trees here, as well as some beautiful beaches…

Not a bad picture, considering Jon took it over his head and upside down as Jessica was strolling behind him

A very large Paul Bunyan and Babe the Big Blue Ox – Hey, it used to be logging territory, so may as well pay homage to the greatest tree-killer of all times.

A Tree So Big You Can Drive Through It
Whoever is in charge of this thing sure has a good racket going: They charge 4 bucks for suckers like us to drive our cars through the tree, take a few photos, and be out of there within 5 minutes. We loved it.

Livin’ the High Life
Jon enjoys a fine Miller High Life (blame Dustin) at our home for the night. Ahh, the good life…

A few minutes later this little girl stopped by with her father. She was quite taken with the flamingo, so we traded her for it: She got the flamingo. We got a photo of a really cute little girl showing off Jon’s handiwork. Good trade, although in retrospect and after a few years at HBS it seems wrong – people were offering cash for them the other day, and here we gave one away for free. That’s not how markets are supposed to work.
