Poodle Dog, Pt 2

From: Zion National Park
To: Arches National Park
Miles: 466
MPG: 50.1
Camping in Zion
Our last (well, only) night in Zion lived up to the name. We cooked out under a beautiful sky then got a good night’s sleep in the cool weather. We drove out through the park’s east gate, an area known for its checkerboard sandstone and striking landscapes. We would have loved to have had more time.

Utah 89 North thru Red Canyon and Bryce
Quite a drive! Within 2 hours we were in Bryce, very grateful to have decided not to skip it.

The only let down was the second “Poodle Rock.” The brochure made it look even better (Is that possible?) than the one in the Valley of Fire, but upon seeing it (after spending 20 minutes searching for it) we decided it must have been trick photography. Those crafty park rangers…

Here is what they claim it “should” look like

On the way back to Utah 89 we wandered around Red Canyon State Park for a bit.

Redmond, Utah
Couldn’t pass this one up. Not only does the town have a great name, but it is also the home of Redmond Salt. Name loyalty only goes so far, though; boy, are we glad we don’t live there.

I70 East Thru San Rafael Swell
This was probably the most incredible drive we have had so far.

Arches
We must be getting jaded. At several points during the day, while staring out at stunning scenery, we would comment, “Yeah, not bad,” as though we were looking out a slightly rusty used car. After our long drive through the impressive San Rafael swell and cranky from hunger, we didn’t expect much from Arches. The gray skies didn’t help our photos any, but even as jaded as we have become, Arches didn’t disappoint.
