Susan Boyle, An Inspiration (From Britain's Got Talent)

Neil Midgley (www.telegraph.co.uk)Boyle is 47, unemployed, perpetually single and lives alone with her cat, Pebbles, in Bathgate, West Lothian – a town apparently dubbed "a dump" by Britain's Got Talent judge Piers Morgan. Boyle's sunny (if gauche) demeanour masks a sad life: the youngest of nine, she was deprived of oxygen at birth, which led to learning difficulties and, as a result, a childhood marred by bullying. Forty years later, it was her mother – whom she lived with and cared for – who wanted her to audition for the ITV talent show. But she died in 2007, leaving Boyle suffering from depression and anxiety.
My long wait is finally over. My favorite reality show has come back after 12 months of waiting. Britain's Got Talent is back!

Many of my friends scrutinize me why loving the show. My answer to them is always simple, they gave people a chance to showcase what they've got, even at times in the oddest sense of things. Sometimes the show is cheesy but that's how real life goes. People who never get the chance for a big break were given a once in a lifetime opportunity to make it to stardom.

On its first episode I was moved with the audition of Ms. Susan Boyle. Indeed, my first reaction to her prelude was cliche. I have seen various auditions in the past and I thought hers would be no different. I thought I would enjoy her part because Simon would probably pin her with his usual sarcasm. Unlike the other contestants in the past, her aura was relaxed and I thought, yeah it would be such a pity not to give her a chance considering her age. It was out of sympathy and respect to someone older with high ambitions that made me think that way. I thought she would be harmless and would set the crowd to laughter.
I was not actually looking at the monitor during the prelude. I was smiling and listening to their conversation, the judges and Ms. Susan Boyle. But when she started singing I dropped my other view and looked at the video. I was shocked same as the judges were. I asked myself where is that voice coming from? But it was her voice and she really meant each lyric of the song. She made it her own as if painting it in canvass with her own life story.
She is like a lotus which usually grows in muddy marshes, an odd place, yet bears a beatiful flower. The oddities of its sorrounding gives contrast to the beauty of its flower. Susan Boyle is like that, she don't possess the physical attributes of a pop star, opera star, whatever star it is, she has none. She is but plain and simple, stirs no attention and is like everybody else, ordinary. And it is in her ordinary-ness that made her special and outstanding. Her talent is pure, untainted, unaccented, honest and has a heart.
Honestly, her story is awe-inspiring and makes me think of my own ordinary-ness. When she was upstage the mockery behind the superficial faces of the audience did not even get into her. She was confident about herself and was not a single bit ashamed. She knew very well that she does not possess a lovely package that would grab attention. That alone made me think have I accepted wholeheartedly the person called "ME"? Are my insecurities still linger on and cripple me in doing what is best and for the best?
On the other side I was also reminded not to judge anybody based from the outward appearance. Each individual possesses unique jewels hidden from the obvious. We are all special and I would like to think that way all the time.
