I have learned that the easy and best way to apply the style to a website is modelling and appliying style to the content and find modules that extend or improve the display of the content.
Designer usually works otherwise, and they "draw" the website first, and then fill it with some articles that are prepared or planiffied to fill determinated boxes. So the website start as an empty shell wich is barely completed the most of the time...
Why do people work like that?... i have 2 theorys
First: get paid soon
Designers do not touch the contents, they make the boxes, backgrounds and colors that you need, some flash animation that justify the price, and then... fill it yourself the site is done so pay me!
Second: The ide makes you lazy
How many designers works mostly with the same "suite"? that suite makes very "graphical" the way you draw the mockup, so you focuses on the "look" of the stuff, stunning colors, smooth animatios, ultimate design tendencies. That will satisfy the designer more like the client!
A different way to design a site is what i call "the right way", is to grab all the content you can give, ALL OF IT, and then you see if there is lack of content or otherwise, if is too much (never is too much), and need a smart compact way to display that content, when you do the clasification of the content, you offer new ways of navigation, like more of this tag, more of this category, or section, etc.
The best way is to make it simple, planning a website is planning the way that the information can be found as easy and fast as possible, with an easy reading and a fast loading. Are you designing for you client, you search engine or you ego?.
