AUTHOR-J.P.Sinha.Teacher for IIT-JEE/PMT
------------------------------------------
NOTE:This part(in blue colour) is being written on 9th March 2012.
According to the proposed new Admission Policy, for admission to Engineering and Medical courses in India(which is likely to be implemented from next year),the marks obtained by a student in his/her 12th board exam will be a very important factor in deciding the admission of the student to an Engineering or a Medical college. In the light of this new proposed Admission Policy, the plan-of-study suggested by me in this article and the Part-2 of this article has become more relevant than before.
------------------------------------------
In India, the moment a student passes out of 10th std., and takes science in 11th/12th, he receives a big shock. The way different subjects are developed in 11th are so different from that in 10th that many students get totally overwhelmed. But after one or two months most students get used to the new syllabus.Even then the preparation of IIT/PMT seems impossible to many.Different people respond differently to this seemingly tough situation. But my experience as a teacher ( I have been teaching PHYSICS/MATHS to 11th/12th students of science in Delhi in the sector of tuition/coaching for the last several years!) says that there is no need to panic at all.
A student should divide the work of IIT/PMT preparation into two stages.
STAGE ONE:
Initially students should simply concentrate on the basic NCERT syllabus. NCERT books are very good for basic concept building. They are also not very lengthy. So one can easily finish the entire 11th + 12th syllabus in eight to nine months, if one is sincere.During this stage, while they are studying NCERT texts, students should practice MCQ problem solving from any popular private publication books e.g. Pradeep,Dinesh etc.For really speedy completion of syllabus according to this plan, personal home tuition may be taken in each subject. In this way, within the first eight-nine months of 11th class, the entire +2 syllabus will be completed at the basic level along with some good amount of problem solving practice for the students.I would also like to emphasize that students should also make it their habbit to keep revising what they have already studied at regular intervals(say,on weekly basis).
Many students take admission in big coachings in the beginning of the class 11th . Most such students never get selected in any IIT/PMT institution.Why?!.... Very simple!. In these coachings, in the name of advanced preparation, blind problem solving is promoted. There, basic concepts are not taught properly, and just formulae are discussed as part of theory teaching. Then right away, very tough questions are introduced to be solved. These questions generally pass over the head of most students. The teacher solves those questions in the class or sometimes students are given printed solutions of the assignments from their institute.Students try to learn those solutions without learning the art that "How to solve a new question by applying systematic thinking to it with the help of basic concepts?"

I do not teach chemistry, so I can't guide you much in chemistry. But yes, I would say just one thing- if you have problem in understanding chemistry, then you should immediately get personal tuition in chemistry from some good teacher.

Yes, it is possible to clear IIT-JEE without taking any coaching. But you must study the extra concepts on your own with the help of good books.
Taking a correspondence course may help, if you finish the study materials on time.
Don't disturb yourself by thinking about two boards.Just concentrate on the books prescribed for your board exam. Study IIT-JEE guides for IIT-JEE preparation.Read Part-1 and Part-2 of my article for more hint.

The text book Pradeep's Fundamental Physics that is widely used in schools contains a section of MCQ type questions at the end of every chapter. You can solve those questions.

For reading the theory, NCERT books are best if you belong to CBSE board.Pradeep book are however more popular among students in Delhi. In, maths you need to use Objective Approach to Maths-Arihant Prakashan along with NCERT to cover the extra topics for engineering entrance.

Abhijit,
in my plan of study, you should not have joined the coaching at this stage. But you have already joined a coaching. So now follow the plan of your institute.Don't try to follow my plan otherwise you will get confused.
Varun,
11th class appears tough in the beginning, but after one or two months of sincere study it appears manageable.Get personal tuition to get started smoothly.Ask your teachers to teach according to the plan written in Part-1 and Part-2 of my articles. You will definitely be able to finish the basic NCERT level course of both 11th and 12th in the 11th class itself.

Sushma,
to take admission in AIIMS you need to appear in the entrance exam that is conducted by AIIMS every year.
Syllabus for that exam is same as the PCB syllabus of 11th+12th standard.
You need to study the theory in each subject from NCERT books(or if NCERT books are not your favourite, then you should read any book that covers the theory exhaustively).
Practice question solving from PMT entrance guides available in the market.

you should take a drop of one year only when your parents support you for that. Otherwise life may turn very tough for you.
Deepak,
You may find logarithm in any good book of Algebra.
For physics Numericals you should use your text books at this stage. Go to the top of this page and read the article carefully to get an idea of a study plan for yourself.
