Selecting text book for Physics: Advice
Many students ask to me "From which book should I study Physics?". The wording of their Question gives an impression to me that the availability of great number text books in Physics for IIT-JEE preparation has totally confused them.
My advice to all such students is very simple and straight forward: read basic concepts from any one good book. Do not read any topic from too many books. Start a topic or a chapter by reading it from NCERT first.Solve all problems contained in NCERT.Then do some problems of the type asked in entrance exams from that topic. After this, you will be able to judge for yourself if reading that topic/chapter from some advanced book is necessary or not. If you feel that what you learnt from NCERT is not enough to solve questions in competitive exams then (and only then !) read that topic from some other advanced book. For this you can use "Resnik and Halliday's book". Other books can also be used according to your personal preference.

do problems from other books only if you have finished doing all questions from your coaching's material and NCERT book.
While doing an exercise from M.L.Khanna if a question seems to be of the same type as the one you have already done then you may solve it roughly instead of solving that question in detail.
Hello Abhas,
Arihant books are good for maths and physics.

Hello Rajeev,
it all depends upon your priorities in life.If you are emotional about becoming an electrical or mechanical engineer and for that you willing to lose one year then you can take a chance next year. But if you are a person who just wants a good career and money in life then losing one year is not recommended. Because what is the guarantee that you will get your desired stream the next year?
Think all aspects. Listen to what your heart says.Evaluate every pros and cons. Then take a quick decision regarding what you want to do.
Best of luck.

for preparing for the aptitude test of KVPY the approach of study can not much different from that for IIT-JEE. Give importance to gaining thorough conceptual clarity in each subject by reading quality text books.Take help from good teachers in each subject.
To Rakesh,
there is no official declaration of topic wise marks distribution for IIT-JEE.

Hello Ravi,
success in Integral Calculus requires you to possess good knowledge of differentiation, trigonometry, algebraic manipulation of fractions and expressions, and above all, you must possess some insight that what approach will convert a given integration into a standard form. You also need to get into contact with some good teacher of maths who can teach you fine skills of doing integration.
Pundarikaksha Nath,
solve all NCERT problems while quickly finishing the entire 11th and 12th syllabus from NCERT books.Read the theory of each chapter thoroughly.Read maths theory too. Then go for advanced problem solving.

To Manpreet,
definetely, one can clear IIT-JEE without a coaching. In most of the cases, a student clears IIT-JEE because of his/her own efforts. Coaching and tuition can at most provide a background support to the efforts of the student. I know many students who have cleared IIT-JEE without joininng any coaching.
Read Part-1 and Part-2 of my articles for preparation strategy tips.
Study to the maximum of your ability.
To Saurabh,
for physics- NCERT books and New Pattern IIT Physics-Arihant.
for maths- NCERT books and Objective Approach to Maths(Arihant Prakashan) or M.L.Khanna's book - but not both.
To Rahul,
if you are unable to study well at Kota then you should return back to your parent's home. But there too you will need to take help from some good teacher.

Hello Akshay,
what is a tough book?!
Read from a book that can give you a sound base in the basic theory of maths, and at the same time, enough number of IIT-JEE type questions for practice.
If you still want tough and tricky questions. Then you should solve Mathematical Olympiad problems.
