Fire safety video Derelict Building Is Asbestos Hotspot

A derelict building in the Friar Gate Arches area of Derbyshire was recently turned into a blazing fireball after suspected arson. However, fire-fighters were unable to access the inside of the building, which meant that putting the fire out took much longer that would normally be the case.
The local fire service believe the fire was started by arsonists at 11am, but due to the fear that there were asbestos and gas cylinders present in the building, it was deemed unsafe for the the fire crews to enter the structure and therefore the fire needed to be fought from outside.. The reason the experts suspected that asbestos and other dangerous chemicals were within the building, was because the area is known for fly tipping and it was rumoured such chemicals had been dumped there.
It took around ten hours for the fire-fighters to fully extinguish the blaze, and during this time in order to protect the general public a 100m exclusion zone was enforced. Even once the fire was killed, members of the crew remained at the site until well in to the evening, and the area remained inaccessible to the general public.
During the fire fighting effort the fire service worked on rotating shifts, with the crew members switching every four hours to ensure the blaze was constantly being controlled and reduced.
The Friar Gate Arches has been subjected to arson attacks previously, and this recent attack has prompted further calls from local residents and businesses for the security to be tightened up in the area.
Derbyshire police and the Environment Agency were made aware of the incident, with many suggesting there needs to be a combined effort to change the security and appearance of the area.
