The new Mhz race, how many cores can be squeezed into a chip?

So far the count is 4. Lets recap, first there was 16 bit. It was replaced by 32 bit. The Mhz race was on which eventually topped out at I think a little over 3 Ghz. So faster processors would need too much cooling. So then comes 64 bit, in and of itself a huge leap. Then they said lets improve it, so born was the dual core 64 bit chip. Then the quad core chip, woohooo!. Soon to come the tricore chip. Wait a tick the tricore comes after the quad? Yes, see for more details. Let clarify thats for the desktop market more than anything. Did I miss anything? I predict it tops out at 12 cores for one chip.
