The Arsenal fans have got it right, according to Arsène Wenger.

The Frenchman believes the supporters were correct to make Thomas Vermaelen the EA SPORTS Player of the Month for August. Voters on Arsenal.com gave the Belgian defender 35 per cent of the poll. His centre back partner William Gallas was second with 23 per cent. Wenger thought this was perceptive voting.

“I believe that is good recognition for the quality of Thomas’ performances,” the manager told Arsenal.com. “Certainly there is a little surprise factor in that. People did not expect him to perform that way straight away and he was not well known before he came here.
But it is well deserved.

“Second in the list is Gallas and that shows our defenders looked quite stable.”

Vermaelen was Arsenal’s only major purchase in the transfer window and Wenger went as far to suggest the 23-year-old’s early form justified his prudence.

“What we did during the transfer period created some anxiety amongst our fans,” said the manager. “But in the end, I am sure the fans are comforted by our decision to buy Vermaelen.”
