Instructions
• Position your patient with the neck as well as head supported. The suitable position is lying onto his back having pillows for the support. Then wash your hands with water and soap and put on the gloves.
• Fill one cup with the distilled or saline water.
• Open your suction equipment. Connect the catheter with connecting tubing through the solid plastic last part of suction unit.
• Turn on your suction machine. All these machines usually have diverse settings for the patients as well as the settings can differ from one machine to another. A few machines attribute the setting of 1-2-3. The Setting 1 is used for infants, Setting 2 is used for the children and Setting 3 is used for the adults. Other gauges of the suction device may be adjusted through the units of the pressure for every millimeter in area. Set the suction unit to 50-100 mm Hg in case of small children or 100-120 mm Hg in case of older children as well as adults.
• Put in suction catheter in tracheotomy opening. Move forward the catheter towards 6 inches intensity maximum or till you feel confrontation inside patient's trachea. In case, you feel confrontation, don't push the catheter.
• Cover suction vent in the suction equipment using your thumb and start suctioning your patient. When you perform this, gradually rotate as well as pull catheter out from tracheotomy opening. • Clean the catheter after each suctioning passing. Do this by placing the catheter in the cup of water as well as covering the vent through your thumb to depict water in the tube. Empty the contents in the sink or gathering basin.
• Repeat steps six and seven until the patient's airway is clear.
• Clean the suction unit thoroughly through suctioning clean and distilled water used for one or two minutes. Turn off your suction machine. Disconnect the tubing as well as allow it to dry. Position the suction device back in the protective packaging.
