No larger than a sugar cube, the video projector is ready to hand at all times. Instead of the conventional microarrays, it contains just a single mirror which can be rotated around two axes. This makes it smaller, lighter and handier than traditional projectors.
Cameras, MP3 players and memory chips are growing smaller by the day. The next challenge is to shrink the projector, a device used day in day out in lecture halls and for video presentations.

Onyx, is a collaborative cellphone project by touch-sensor specialists Synaptics and industrial design wizards Pilotfish.
Unlike many concepts, where a sleek, headline grabbing shell either runs standard software or nothing at all, or a new platform runs on bland reference hardware, part of the charm of Onyx comes from the harmony of the software/hardware interface. In fact it’s this interface - and your interaction with it - that potentially makes Onyx the product of 2006.

Norway's Trolltech AS has demonstrated the first fully reprogrammable mobile handset to help phone designers innovate as fast as their counterparts in the personal computer industry have done.
A major divide that separates PCs from mobile telephones is that while designers can freely reprogram a computer's software, most of a phone's functions are fixed at the factory. Trolltech's phone comes with all the software and source code necessary to develop a complete mobile phone model, including core Linux operating system controls, a phone dialler, address book and camera application.
The phone is not aimed at consumers, but would allow a wide audience of designers to create new features for future mobile phones.

Does Motorola's success with its Linux-based "Ming" phones in China indicate that the open-source platform is now a serious contender against Symbian and Windows Mobile in the handheld-device software platform arena?
The phone maker, which debuted the Ming smart phone in March in China, shipped more than 1 million Linux-based units in China alone last quarter, according to research firm Canalys.
The Ming smart phone will be launched in other "high-growth markets" in the second half of this year, according to Alan Nicklos, vice president of mobile devices at Motorola Asia. High-growth markets for the company are Africa, Southwest Asia, North Asia and Southeast Asia.

NTT DoCoMo, Inc. and Aquafairy Co. announced today that they agreed to jointly develop a micro fuel cell for 3G FOMA™ handsets.
The fuel cell is the smallest in the world with power output of 2 watts as of July 14. The recharger combines DoCoMo's recharger technology with Aquafairy's thin film power unit technology and catalyst for producing hydrogen from water.
The simple hydrogen-producing mechanism and power units make the recharger less than one-fourth the size and more than twice as powerful as the methanol fuel cell prototype that DoCoMo unveiled on July 6, 2005. The easily portable recharger can charge a handset several times, and the recharging time is approximately the same as an AC adapter.

Cell phone users and instant messaging addicts can now search the web using IM chat software rather than a web browser.
Kozoru, a Kansas-based startup, on Monday launched Byoms, a new search engine that queries the web with instant messages.
Users send the system a question as a chat message, and the system replies with relevant links. It's similar to Google, except Byoms returns three of four replies instead of hundreds, and can be queried in plain English.

Chip-maker Micron Technology is to unveil a thumbnail-sized digital sensor that enables pocket-sized cameras and cell phones to capture bursts of 10 high-quality photos in a single second or even high-definition video.
Production of the new 8-megapixel digital image sensor is expected to begin early next year at Micron's fabrication plants in Idaho and Italy, the Boise-based company said Thursday.
Devices using the new chip should reach consumers by late 2007 and will feature high-speed, high-megapixel digital photography capabilities normally found in more expensive, single-lens reflex cameras.
