This is a book for anyone involved in designing a web site, from the CEO of a corporation down to the designers and developers in the pit. What we think how people use a web site is not really the way it happens. Steve points this out and many other misconceptions design teams have.

Jeffery Zeldman is to the point on web standards in this book. He says that 99.9% of web sites are obsolete today. Why? Because the coding practices used by most web designers are outdated. They are outdated because they use deprecated tags, like the
tag, and they are still using tables for layout. Although there is no sin in using tables if the code and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) validate according to the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) standards and they are accessible according to the WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines).

There is a note on the cover that says “The book that should have been in the box”. I certainly agree with this statement after reading the book.

A lot of things have changed in OpenOffice since version 1.x, but the basics of the program are still much the same. You can still open, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents that aren't very complicated. In fact, Microsoft has gone to an open document format in Office 2007 that is similar to the format of OpenOffice.

This book by Jason Beaird is a thought provoking piece. Although it is not a how-to book, there are a couple of how-to examples included. The author did a fine job explaining the process of web design. The tidbits of good business practices he mentions (e.g. Client feedback) throughout the book was a definite plus.

After reading Joseph Kong's book “Designing BSD Rootkits ~ an Introduction to Kernel Hacking”, I came away with a new attitude and respect for rootkits. I learned that rootkits can be used defensively as well as offensively. The book is written in tutorial form on how to write a rootkit. Although I did not understand all of the code contained in the book, and there is lots of it, it did help me to understand the workings of a rootkit.
