Today we got to Gringolândia just in time for lunch.
I think we’ll start going in earlier. People have been coming by while we’re out. It’s mostly people who want us to advertise in their brand of yellow pages, or someone who wants a job teaching for us... But you never know. A real-live student might wander in.
Bob and I worked at Gringolândia until we got bored. Then we went and got haircuts. Bob got the printer hooked up, so that was good. I got a few things done, too, but I didn’t take any photos cuz I spent the day yesterday sorting through photos for the blog. I worked on getting materials together for the students we’re tutoring, so I didn’t get home until after 6:30.
It’s the end of dry season, so it’s getting hot now. The humidity seems to be up, too. Typically it’s very dry here. The clouds overhead made me think it would rain soon.

This morning I stopped at Colégio São Francisco to talk to the coordinator about promoting Gringolândia. She was busy, so after waiting for about an hour, I managed to talk to the “general coordinator” instead. I’ll go back tomorrow to meet one of the English teachers who works there.
I continued on to Gringolândia. The student Bob was going to tutor this morning didn’t show up, but we had plenty to keep us busy. We took a break for lunch, and then Eliana came by and helped us with phone calls and window washing. In the afternoon I went to one of the private high schools, Delta, where I had arranged to meet another coordinator about Gringolândia. While I was there, it started raining for the first time in months. It looks like dry season is coming to an end. People have been complaining about the heat here recently. Instead of a mild 86 degrees, it’s been 90 degrees. The humidity has seemed higher in recent days, too. But when the humidity is normally 20%, any increase is noticeable. I walked home in the summer rain... Things really cooled off after the rain.
In the evening I went to see our friend Guilherme, the astute businessman. He is giving Gringolândia great business advice, as well as giving us contacts. Two of the large employers in town are interested in our services: AmBev, and GreenPharma.

Today I went to Colégio São Francisco, the big fancy Jesuit school down the street from our home. I had arranged to meet one of the English teachers. I met her at recess, and she invited me to come visit her at the public school where she teaches. So I’ll go there next Thursday.
A couple blocks down the street, I left off flyers with Sueli, our next-door neighbor who owns a stationery store. She informed me that our downstairs neighbor is the headmaster at Colégio São Francisco. I asked her to introduce me to him some time soon.
On my way to Gringolândia I happened to run into two guys on the sidewalk who speak English. Leandro had come by Gringolândia a couple of weeks ago, and his friend Marcelo teaches English. So I’m making contacts just by walking down the street.
I had lunch at Gringolândia, and worked there through the afternoon. Two 13-year-old students from Colégio São Francisco stopped by.
Their English teacher, whom I had just met this morning, had already given them info about our school.
On my way home, I stopped by the ice cream place to say HI to the owners... Only to hear English being spoken at me. Another English teacher, a friend of a friend, introduced herself. She was with her English student, so I invited them to Gringolândia. I kept walking, and a couple blocks later a group of four high school guys spoke English at me, so I stopped and introduced myself and invited them to Gringolândia. It’s my hat. It shouts Gringo. But that’s a good thing for someone who’s promoting Gringolândia.
SO... Things are beginning to happen.. Ever so slowly, until we reach critical mass...
I didn’t feel so good today. In the evening I had a bit of a fever. I think something’s been going around.
FRIDAY, September 21, 2007
Today I wasn’t feeling much better. The aspirin helps. I stayed at home and rested most of the day. I missed the first cooking class at Gringolândia.
I felt well enough to send lesson plans. Heidi and Bob did great with the three students. They made cookies and pizza.
Bob took photos.
In the evening I felt well enough to go to the Gringolândia social club. Brian picked me up.
There weren’t many people,
but there was pizza and oatmeal cookies.
And Bianca and Lexy were there, so it WAS a party.
And, I got to see O Universitário... and the social page...
Spring is here. I’m never sure what that means in the tropics, but rainy season is just around the corner.

Today I felt sick and lazy again. I watched two videos. I took lots of naps. A vulture landed on our roof, but even that auspicious guest didn’t cheer me up.
SUNDAY, September 23, 2007
Today I spent most of the day in bed again. I did watch a video, “Zodiac”. I guess I must have a virus or something. Maybe I should go to the doctor. As long as I keep taking aspirin I feel mostly human. Food disgusts me. That’s not normal.
MONDAY, September 24, 2007
Bob went to Gringolândia by himself for a full day of work, while I stayed home. I’m still not feeling myself. Bob tutored a student in the morning, and took care of business for the rest of the day. I slept a lot. I’m kinda hoping next week will be better.
