This morning Bob and I went to Universidade Estadual de Goiás, UEG, to meet Edilson.
Edilson teaches at UEG in the mornings, and at Faculdade Latino Americana in the evenings. Bob and I got to visit a class of students who are studying to be teachers of English. Edilson joined Bob and me for lunch at Barriga Cheia, and we continued our conversation about language teaching.
Edilson will help Bob with his Portuguese a couple of times a week.
After lunch, Bob and I went to the furniture store downtown that has classroom furniture that we liked. We ordered six cushiony-wheelie chairs for Gringolândia.
We needed ice cream, so we went to Fulô do Cerrado.
We continued our march, and ended up at SESC, a club for the working class. It's in the heart of the Jundiaí neighborhood, surrounded by rich condo dwellers.
I couldn’t join as an employee, but I did qualify for neighborhood membership... Membership is really cheap, but now I have to attend one meeting a month, and volunteer occasionally. The next meeting is this Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Bob may join, too, despite the meeting times. We’d have access to the gym and swimming pools, and we’d get discounts when we stay at the SESC hotels in the state. Bob and I had a look around the place, and of course, I took photos.
We were going to tutor tonight, but Glória is out of town... I hope she’ll bring us more cologne samples.
WEDNESDAY, May 9, 2007
Today was a slow news day. Bob and I ran some errands... the bank, paying bills... cheap lunch at the green place... the nursery... I sent a few e.mails, we watched a video... And right at sunset we walked to Ligia’s bakery so that I could have cornbread to eat with my fruit.
That’s pretty much it.
Oh, yeah. Somewhere along the way I took pictures of pomegranates and flowers.

The weather today was perfect. Sun and clouds, cool breezes, and the exact temperature you set your thermostat at.
This morning I worked on finding a logo for Gringolândia.
....I wanted a snowman to represent the cold frozen northland, but everyone says a snowman is just for Christmas. Bob likes the Statue of Liberty.
We went downtown around noon, and saw the fake flower displays that are set up on the tops of cars... just in time for Mother’s Day.
Then there are the intimate apparel vendors.
Our first official stop of the day was for lunch at Chão Cerrado.
From there we went to Carrefour to pick up a few things... Açaí flavored soap, that sort of thing. We went past the orange-purple-green hotels...
to Gringolândia to wait for a furniture delivery, and to ask Rodrigo for help with the logo, and to ask Mônica for help with a dozen other items.
The furniture came, and the place already is beginning to look like a classroom.
....I like the black granite restrooms.
On our way home we stopped at the Taiwanese shop to pick up some homemade tofu. So now, what do I DO with the stuff?

Bob and I went to Gringolândia this morning to meet with the painter who’s going to paint the interior walls something like light blue.
From there we walked toward downtown...
and toward Chão Cerrado... Only to run into Brian along the way.
He joined us for lunch,
but had to run off afterwards.
Bob and I went to the furniture place to see if they had the 80-centimeter-tall stool we wanted, but no. Such a thing may not exist.
With Mother's Day coming up, I thought I should take more pictures of A Praça das Mães.
The fake flower vendors are all over downtown.
We walked home, expecting to meet Edilson, but something came up, so we’ll meet with him another day.
I took a few photos of our garden, including the ripe jabuticaba.
The Pope has been in Brazil since Wednesday, and today he turned some dead guy into a saint.
SATURDAY, May 12, 2007
I got up early this morning to attend a meeting at SESC, the social service club for people who work in commerce. Bob stayed home. The 8:30 meeting started promptly at 9:05. There were about 50 women and 6 men in attendance. We all watched a video promoting collective sports activities. Then a woman gave a lecture about self-esteem for women. Then, at a certain point, she asked all the men to leave. So we left. We were given a sign-in sheet to record our presence. As the cookies and coffee appeared, I left. My cheap membership in the organization is tied to my attendance of the monthly meetings... But I’m not so sure I’ll be back.
I walked home, and Bob and I walked downtown for lunch at Chão Cerrado.
Downtown was packed with people doing last-minute shopping for Mother’s Day.... Buying fake flowers.
Then there are the root and fruit vendors who are always on the streets, holiday or no holiday.
Bob and I headed home, but along the way Bob decided to go directly to Gringolândia, where there is a new "time and temperature" sign out front by the traffic circle.
Meanwhile, I went home, where I had agreed to meet our carpenter, Euripides. Euripides and his son Jaire came by and gave me a ride to Gringolândia, where we met up with Bob. Euripides and Jaire took measurements for room dividers and a table... And then it was time to go to Fulô do Cerrado for ice cream.
Bob and I walked home... past the loofa plants...
In the evening our friend Edilson, came by to chat and to give Bob a Portuguese lesson.
Edilson is the supervisor of the English program at FLA, and he teaches English teachers at UEG.
We ended up going to the Chinese restaurant for dinner. His friend Kátia joined us.

MOTHER’S DAY
On our way downtown, Bob and I stopped to appreciate the fragrant leaves of an unusual tree.
Bob and I had lunch at Ferreirinha, just like every Sunday.
Afterwards we went to the tattoo studio to see Heidi and family.
Bianca had a new haircut, and Lexy performed, as usual.
Sirlene and Gil were there, too.
So was Rocky The Dog.
Later in the day Bob and I watched a couple of videos.
MONDAY, May 14, 2007
We had lunch at Chão Cerrado,
which is across the street from the new "Marisa" store. We did some window shopping, and stopped to appreciate the T-shirt with the enigmatic English phrase, "Come Out Your Laundry".
We walked to Gringolândia by way of a furniture store. Mônica introduced us to a friend of hers, Mateus, who would like to teach English.
Who knows? Maybe some day he’ll work for us at Gringolândia. We thought the painters would be working there today, but they hadn’t started yet.
Bob and I headed home. Bob stopped to buy groceries, and I hurried home to make sure we wouldn’t miss the phone guy. We’re switching phone companies to save money. The phone guy came around 4 pm, but he couldn’t hook up a phone today, since they need to run a cable to the building first.
Our friend from the nursery, Walter, stopped by to prune one of our plants that wasn’t doing so well.
The one he trimmed two weeks ago is looking great now.
In the evening we went to tutor Glória and Guilherme. It’s about a 15-minute walk each way... and most of the way we have luminous street lights to guide us.
