Dutch, personal
After my failed attempt to try that Dutch audio book, I've been a bit wary. Fine fine, so it was my fault; I should have listened to the chapters in correct order. It's still discouraging. Will get back to it soon. Once my ego is feeling a bit less pathetic.
In the meantime, I found
this funny link. This made my day. I am always making the worst jokes about postal deliveries. Alright, so that is not very flattering, especially to my friend at the post office. But, on some level, you'd think that the worldwide jokes about the post office must be there for a reason. No smoke without fire and all that.
No wonder one of Pratchett's books were about the Post office!
As it is, I am anxiously waiting for some books I ordered from play.com. I am willing to write off the delay as an after-effect of the snow storm. Even after my neighbor ended up with my first book package.
At least I am not like that bloke in that link I just provided. What was it, postal delivery after 15 years?
Ooh and I am watching Black Blood Brothers now. The vampire bloodline story is awesome, as is the Korean(?) power metal intro.

Dutch, personal
So I took it upon myself to improve my Dutch. It's nearly one year since we moved here; my writing, reading skills are alright but speaking is another matter.
And what's my diabolical plan?
For now I decided to listen to Moeders Vleugels on LibriVox.
It's a translation of a story by Louisa May Alcott. I figured it was safer to start with a story I had read.
So far, someone found a potato and someone heard something. And there are quite a few Sirs. And I think someone could not carry something. Must be all those potatoes I keep hearing about.
Well .... let's see how it goes. I prefer to think I will come out speaking Dutch fluently ... eventually.
In the meantime, I hope to play lots of NeverWinter Nights this weekend. Yay! And finally catch up with Bleach Vol 3. and Vol.4. I've been watching them regularly but am lagging behind on the Bleach manga ... kinda like watching Youtube on capped internet. It'll load slowly and you know you will get to it in the end.

copyright, songs
I was talking to some friends about that recent controversy - Joe Satriani suing Coldplay 'cos they kind of ripped his song.
Well, we started talking about various songs which were 'inspired' by older songs. I don't mind when people attribute songs to the original and then make a tribute cover. But if you are going to stand up on a stage and say "ye, we wrote this little song" then I must laugh. And of course boo!
By the way, that last reference was to Beach Boys saying they wrote Ring Ring Goes the Bell (oh dear dear).
Anyway, so I came across this
songs inspired by other songs list on Youtube. Actually it is called Similarities in Songs and you can find it on Youtube. Some of them are pretty funny because it looks like they seriously ripped off the other folks. Some don't quite sound the same.
Must say I laughed when I saw that Avril Lavigne was on the list. Of serious borrowers. No offense to any of her fans, but she did go a bit far left of the traffic light when she aped that blonde look.
On that note, did you know the song In the Army Now was sung by
Bolland & Bolland who were born in South Africa? I don't think they were SA citizens but it's strange to think song is now more popular as the Status Quo song.

blogging, netherlands, personal, free speech
...
It's been a while since I blogged. Looks like a lot has happened. For one thing it's close to the end of the year and there's so much to do.
Nice bit is the snow. A few weeks ago we had snow. Everything looked soft and squishy and pretty after the snowfall. Yay!
Looks like there's gonna be more snow this Thr! As it is, there was a bit of snowfall last night. And it was not the teeny tiny flakes from last few weeks; these were respectable big fluffy snowflakes.
Okay

so they were not fluffy but they did resemble yummy crunchy crystals.
On an ending note, I want to mention blogger from SA.
He's being sued by QVC just cos he criticized them in his blog. What I found annoying was that poor guy was complaining about their somewhat deceptive tactics and next thing you know a large corporation makes a nasty move to silence him.

We're all been at the receiving end of dodgy service; a trip to licensing department regularly proves just that.
Well, anyone reading this, do check out his blog and please mention the story.

IE, opera, web development, save the developer
Upon reading
Questioning the Norm recently, I found out that the Save the Developers site was gone!! Kapot! Eki Eki Eki!!
Why why why?
For info on what the Save the Dev site was about, check out
Questioning the Norm . To put it briefly, it was a site that berated the torture that was IE6 and provided a javascript that told you to get something less problematic than IE6. Like FF, Konq, or Opera.
The biggest advancements have come through Opera in recent years and hence it would be the first browser that I recommended.
But coming back to Save the Dev site, here is the problem: Not only is the site MIA but it now redirects to IE7 site.
Arrgh!
Anyone know what is going on?
I loved that bit of code; so much better than using IE hacks for all the web dev projects.
Continues looking ...

blogging, netherlands, personal, science fiction
...
I have been meaning to start up the blog but something always came up (work, sorting out tax, autumn cold, a pigeon at the window). So here I am.
Why did I choose that particular blog title (
Blogging from Rotterdam)? well, we recently moved to Netherlands and I figured it would be fun to mention some of the ongoings here.
For instance the F.A.C.T.S conference thingy jingy in Belgium every October. Of course, by the time I found out about it, it was already over.
It's a fun get-together for fans of scifi, anime, cartoons, figurines and what not. Lots of famous scifi folk was supposed to be there this year - Cliff Simon (hooray for Baal)

and Paul McGillion were there among other familiar faces. Yes I did oogle at the official site for a tad too long.
Seeing my pathetic expression,

my husband assures me that we will make a plan for next October. Hooray again.
Link to F.A.C.T.S site.
Holey Moley, can I also add that this is the most painless, efficient text editor I have used for a blog/comment app?
