What's the take on Song 'plagarism'?

I was talking to some friends about that recent controversy - Joe Satriani suing Coldplay 'cos they kind of ripped his song.
Well, we started talking about various songs which were 'inspired' by older songs. I don't mind when people attribute songs to the original and then make a tribute cover. But if you are going to stand up on a stage and say "ye, we wrote this little song" then I must laugh. And of course boo!
By the way, that last reference was to Beach Boys saying they wrote Ring Ring Goes the Bell (oh dear dear).
Anyway, so I came across this songs inspired by other songs list on Youtube. Actually it is called Similarities in Songs and you can find it on Youtube. Some of them are pretty funny because it looks like they seriously ripped off the other folks. Some don't quite sound the same.
Must say I laughed when I saw that Avril Lavigne was on the list. Of serious borrowers. No offense to any of her fans, but she did go a bit far left of the traffic light when she aped that blonde look.
On that note, did you know the song In the Army Now was sung by Bolland & Bolland who were born in South Africa? I don't think they were SA citizens but it's strange to think song is now more popular as the Status Quo song.
