Longclick on mobile devices

I am trying to understand the greatness with using longclick (click and hold) in mobile browsers. (and also in other programs)
In my Android browser, (still 1.5) longclick brings up a number of options when I click a link. Opera Mini on Android does something similar. (but with a different look) Mobile Safari enters a marking text mode.
I find it quite annoying to use longclick, you cover parts of the screen while doing it, and you don't see what is actually going on, the contents on the screen is changing at the same time.
The context menu on the desktop is really helpful, so I understand why one would want to take the same functionality to the mobile phone, but I don't think it is working, and I would like to see a different solution.
