2007, devices, and product categories

It seems like 2007 is going to be a year with consumer devices in a lot of important new product categories. New you say (when you read the examples), well no, but for the first time aiming for the masses at least.

First there was Apple TV, a slim media box with a consumer price.

Then, the iPhone, a rather pricy consumer device, but trying to reach the masses with a portable device with a rather big screen and no keyboard. (yes Nokia 770 was way earlier, but no phone, and no real push towards the customer, even if the price was right)

Then, Windows Home Server, look at Tranquil T7-HSA, seems to be a fantastic piece of hardware if it delivers, slim, only 24W, and no fans!

Finally, Palm Foleo. An ultra portable laptop at the right price, with limited functionality, but focused on solving the things that are most important when you are travelling. And, instant on with the push of a button.

I am not saying that these 4 products are great, I have yet to try one, but these are the 4 product categories that I have been hoping to see in the last few years, and here they come, during the same year!

Well, I still hope for the SSE disks to get into a mass market laptop, but I don't see that happening this year. Well, we should save something for next year.

There has been some important consumer products that have been popularized the last few years. The flat screen TV was one. The Hard Disc recorder another. The all-in-one computer (iMac) with LCD. The portable music player with support for OGG.

There are more things that I think needs to change soon in the consumer space, but they are more service oriented, and should be saved for another blog post.
