The Bomb Dot Com

, ,

To describe my niece, Simone, as extremely energetic is less than true. She’s the kind of teenager who could have your mind spinning within only two minutes of meeting her and have you performing freakish physical feats with parts of the body you did not even know could move that way. As a child she used to place herself in the middle of a doorway and climb the sides with her hands alone. She is captivating, shocking, and beyond attractive - that’s Simone.

So when I was in Montreal for a family function, we got to spend some time with each other. She came down for breakfast one morning wearing a t-shirt that said:

E = MC2

Miss Moman

After looking at her t-shirt and believing that Miss Moman must be the latest band targeting teenagers I asked, “Who is Miss Moman?”

“She’s the Bomb dot com,” was the response I received.

“Is she a new pop star?” I questioned.

“No. She’s my math teacher.”

“Your math teacher???” I was amazed and puzzled. “You had a t-shirt made with your math teacher’s name on it? Why would you do that?”

“I like her. She rocks.”

“What do you love about her?”

“She is the best.”

“Okay, exactly what makes her the best?”

“Nothing actually, she’s just simply awesome.”

“I do not understand. What makes her awesome?”

“She is just amazing. We have a pretty good relationship. She lets me do things in class.”

“Like what?” I was overcurious. I wanted to know what kind of magic elixir Miss Moman was creating to generate such enthusiasm from a grade 10 student.

“Well, I'll give you an example. The other day I was resting on her table and I saw her pencil case. She forgot it in class. So I opened it up and found this cool pen and I started playing with it.”

“You were lying down on her desk?!?! Who just does that? Did she get upset?”

“No, that’s the thing, she doesn’t get upset. She’s cool with it.”

In my mind, I imagined a circus trainer wanting to control her wild animals. She certainly had no power to manage her class. I assumed it was extremely hard for anyone to learn anything in that kind of crazy environment. “Okay, what are your grades like?”

“Pretty good. I got a 98% on my last test.”

“98%! Wow! That’s great.”

“She makes me want to work for her and obtain good grades.”

Still speechless by the Miss Moman puzzle, I persisted with this question, “What do you think makes Miss Moman so special?”

“Nothing actually. She just lets me be me.”
