Deep valley hidden in funnel-like geography
Sancheong (山淸: clean mountain) means a "clean mountain."It does not mean "blue mountain." Why is it called "clean mountain?" It may be because Sancheong-gun has many serene valleys and streams and the mountains are reflected in Gyeonghogang River, which is the lifeline of the Sancheong area. The calm water reflects the mountains like a mirror and the mountains are reborn clearly in the water. Therefore, the area is called Sancheong.
There are many deep valleys at Sancheong, which is placed on the eastern side of Jirisan Mountain. However, most of the valleys are crowded with vacationers every summer and the water in Gyeonghogang River is not as clean as it used to be in the past. Is there any spot that preserves the original pure natural charm in the valley like Sancheong at the foot of Jirisan Mountain? Obong Valley mostly satisfies this request. Though there are few vacationers in mid-summer, this valley is rather peaceful and calm in comparison with other congested valleys among the Jirisan Mountains. Then, when autumn comes, the deserted valley is so lonely that it looks like a desolate secluded spot.
Ssukbatjae Peak (1,315m) at the northeastern tip of Jirisan Mountain stands in the middle as the main peak. Jwacheongryong (blue dragon on the left side) ridge on the left side of the main peak stretches along the borderline between Geumseo-myeon and Samjang-myeon in Sancheong-gun, and Ubaekho (white tiger on the right side) ridge on the right side of the main peak stretches along the borderline between Geumseo-myeon and the two myeon’s of Hamyang-gun -- Macheon-myeon and Hyucheon-myeon. Water flowing down from the funnel-shaped slopes of the two ridges join together at Obong Valley and flow down to Banggokcheon Stream -> Imcheongang River -> Gyeonghogang River -> Namgang River and finally to Jinyangho Lake at Jinju.
