2009 Edinburgh hogmanay torchlight parade

Edinburgh's hogmanay torchlight procession

I went to the end of year fire festival tonight, joining a parade of thousands carrying fire torches through the streets of Edinburgh, from the mound to Calton hill. When we reached the top of the hill there was a bonfire and amazing fireworks. The pictures were a little blurry, these were the only ones that I can actually make anything out in the picture! I have some videos though, which I shall post soon

my beautiful new Ikea casserole dish :)

,

I went to Ikea today, and spent all my christmas money on this lovely blue casserole dish. I have always wanted a 'le creuset' casserole dish like this one... http://www.sz-wholesale.com/uploadFiles/upimg2/Le-Creuset-26cm-Round-Cocotte---Blue16123.jpg and this one from Ikea was the nearest affordable version I could find. I have looked longingly upon this little blue pot every time I have been in Ikea for the last year, and finally I have one of my very own  It is made of cast iron and weighs a tonne. I staggered all the way back home carrying it, along with a years supply of apple and cinnamon tea lights, and some cute little bowls to put my ingredients in when i'm cooking. I'm sure it will be worth every aching muscle
I plan on making a lot of casseroles this winter!

christmas

I finally got my white christmas!

We spent the morning in our flat (it was the first morning I have ever woken up in my own bed, and in a different place to my parents house on christmas day!) Breakfast was smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. Then it was off in a taxi to my parent's house for the afternoon, arriving just in time for vol au vents, sausage rolls and cava cocktails

Afterwards I went with my boyfriend for a lovely long christmas day walk across the fields and through the woods. This picture was taken from near my parent's house, looking towards the forth road bridge and the beautiful snowy Scottish highlands.

Christmas dinner was the usual sort of things...roast chicken, roast potatoes, mashed turnip and brussel sprouts. I even ate some chicken for the first time in about ten years! I am trying to persuade myself to start eating meat again, or at least occasionally. I miss out on so many nice meals being a vegetarian! I've had some proper meaty lasagne since then too!

Christmas dog!

christmas eve breakfast (and christmas eve snow!)

The very lovely breakfast made for me by my very lovely boyfriend this morning

The view from my kitchen window whilst having breakfast...still snowing!!!

The view from my living room window...
the queue for the butcher shop stretches around the corner three times the length you can see!

snow makes everything so beautiful!!

Some more snow pictures, from my walk this morning in the Botanical gardens

snowman spotting :)

Today we woke up to find Edinburgh covered in a thick blanket of snow, it's so deep that it comes half way up my boots! :eyes: I haven't seen snow like this for a long time! I've certainly never seen proper deep snow in the centre of town before! Very exciting!

Instead of making my own snowman, I went out with my camera this morning and took some pictures of any snowmen I happened to pass. In Inverleith park I found the 'mum and baby' snowmen and the 'snow chicken'. The 'pineapple snowman' and the mini snowmen were in the botanical gardens. The 'scarecrow santa' snowman was in the christmas tree sales yard

ferris wheel!

I'm dreaming of a white christmas...

, , , ...

The pond in the park near where I live has frozen over, and all the poor swans, ducks and geese are squashed into a small corner of the water which is not yet covered in ice! I hope it doesn't freeze over completely! I went there yesterday to feed half a loaf of old bread to them.

I used to love feeding the ducks and swans in Salisbury, but every time I try to do it here I have to abandon it and give the bread to my boyfriend to throw to the birds, as there are so many scary seagulls swooping and flapping around me, like a scene from Daphne Du Maurier's 'the birds'! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Birds_(story)

The ice looked beautiful though, almost as though you could skate on it! I've never seen that happen in Edinburgh before! It's an unusually cold start to the winter here this year. Normally the snow doesn't start until the end of January, but this year we might even have a white christmas!

I took these pictures of Edinburgh castle and Ramsay Gardens today, on my way to visit my mum. I thought they looked really pretty, like they had been dusted with icing sugar

When I got to where my parents live, there was so much deep snow everywhere, and it was snowing amazingly fluffy giant snowflakes! It was so peaceful and beautiful! By the time I had returned to town however, the snow had stopped, and it was back to slushy streets crammed full of people panicking over their christmas shopping. I think the hill my parents live on must be some kind of magical snowy narnia bubble...

finally having some christmas cake!

After patiently waiting since the cake was made in the middle of October, today we finally got to have a piece with a nice cup of tea :hat: Half of the cake was cut into slices for ourselves, the other half is going to be taken to my parents house tomorrow. It turned out great! You can really taste the brandy it has been fed with every week! Yum  I tried to cut it as neatly as I could, but it's quite crumbly and sticky!

snoooooow! :)

eeeeee! view from my kitchen window this morning!

view from the living room window! (eee!)

view from the bedroom window! I feel like i'm sleeping in an igloo

xmas cards!

I love christmas cards! I especially love the fact that all the cards arriving at the flat this month are addressed to both me and my boyfriend. I have never had this before, always having spent the time before christmas at my parent's house, this is my first christmas season spent entirely in my own little home. I am no longer just a name tacked on to the end of a card to someone else, I get my very own card! :D :hat:

The cards on the top shelf are not christmas cards though, they are for something else

I love the picture on this card! I got his card for my boyfriend, it looks just like us! :D

lemony herby fish

,

I decided to finally get round to trying a recipe from my boyfriend's newish Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall recipe book: http://www.amazon.co.uk/River-Cottage-Everyday-Hugh-Fearnley-Whittingstall/dp/0747598401/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1260955009&sr=1-1 This fish one looked quite easy and quick to make. If I made it again though I would use half as much lemon, more garlic, and grill the fish instead of frying it. I don't like frying anything, grilling is much more healthy, tastes nicer too!

I made the salsa first: one lemon and rind (too much!), slosh of olive oil, spoon of capers, bunch of flat leaf parsley, 10 leaves of basil, one clove of garlic, salt and pepper.

Then I fried the fish for about 3 minutes each side, adding the salsa for the last minute. Before I started the fish I also cooked some potatoes to make mash, and steamed some broccoli.

It looked like this in the illustration in the book...

Mine looked like this though! I was hungry and in a bit of a rush
Looks like i've thrown the food at the plate from a distance!

Tasted nice though

santa run

giant christmas tree spider

I thought these poor trees looked like they had been wrapped up in cocoons of spider webs by some kind of monster christmas tree eating spider. I get the shivers every time I have to walk past! :right: bug

santa and his reindeer

,

Santa arrived in Princes street gardens this weekend, his reindeer will be staying there until xmas eve  Santa visits once a day to feed them, and to scare some children with his eyebrows. There is also a little red train that chuffs its way around the garden, crammed full of squealing over excited children

I had intended to go into town this morning to take some photos of the charity santa run, in which about 1500 people dressed up as santa ran through town. I slept in though! I have yet to see this event! Whoever thought of putting it on a Sunday morning? pah.

Edinburgh christmas market fairground rides

my first ride on a ferris wheel! :)

Tonight I went to the German market with some friends, we drank mulled wine and walked around the beautiful stalls together, smelling all the lovely smells and stopping to admire things on the way.

Then we went on the ferris wheel! I have never been on a big wheel before, so it was very exciting for me :D The wheel turned around four times. From the top we could see right across Edinburgh, and we could see all the lights and crowds of the German market spread out far below us.

It was a foggy night, and the castle looked so beautiful and atmospheric all surrounded in the swirling mist. Everything looked like it was in soft focus, all the lights twinkling and fuzzy looking (it wasn't just the mulled wine either!) I loved it! I could have stayed on there all night, going round and round and round...

Of course, I had decided to leave my camera at home tonight... Homer: Doh!

Edinburgh's Norwegian christmas tree :)

Every year Norway sends Edinburgh a beautiful christmas tree. http://www.edinburghschristmas.com/content/Edinburgh%E2%80%99sChristmasTree/2476/ It is displayed on the hill leading up to the old town and the castle, overlooking the German market and all the fun christmasy things going on in princes street gardens  (which I will hopefully get round to blogging soon!)

These videos of the market are not great...but I have taken so many photos from this market...and I just haven't had time to pick out my favourites yet!! soon though!

roasted sweet red pepper pesto pasta

I made this for dinner tonight, it was really good! I whizzed together in the blender two roasted romano sweet red peppers, a clove or two of garlic, 30g of ground almonds, 30g of parmesan, 2 tbsp of olive oil, 2 tsp of balsamic vinegar, 1 tsp of lemon juice, and some salt and pepper. It was so easy!

winter trip to Salisbury...

,

Last week my boyfriend and I went to Salisbury for a little holiday  This was the place we stayed at while we were there, a 13th century thatched cottage in Dorset! http://www.thecompassesinn.com/

The pub there was so cosy, they had fairy lights up and a log fire crackling away in the corner, it smelled to good! There were little booths with candles and lanterns for each table, and the food was absolutely amazing, old fashioned English pub food. I had the best fish and chips I have ever had in my life! I also had the best breakfast ever of smoked salmon and scrambled eggs.

The room we stayed in was just above the pub, and had a really low wooden beamed ceiling and hobbit sized door frames. We had to try to remember not to hit our heads on them all the time!

ping! christmas cake is ready! :)

Last night the christmas cake was finally finished! :hat: It was made about two months ago, in the middle of October... http://my.opera.com/kirstycat/blog/2009/10/15/christmas-cake we have been feeding it with brandy every week  http://my.opera.com/kirstycat/blog/feeding-the-xmas-cake

On Saturday night I put the marzipan layer on it, and on Sunday night my boyfriend added the final layer of royal icing  We couldn't afford to add any plastic decorations to the top (the nice ones were about £15 each!), so it was decided that it should be kept nice and simple. It is now sitting in its box, patiently waiting to be eaten

I brushed the cake with warm apricot jam before rolling out the marzipan and sticking it to the cake. The icing was then added, and fluffed up a bit to make it look like snow, and should soon set into a nice crispy crust of icing. I can't wait to cut the cake and see how it turned out!! :D

fa la la la la, la la la la!

festive afternoon tea

I went with my boyfriend today to my favourite cafe for a little celebration afternoon tea. I had a yummy smoked salmon roll with beautiful red pepper and sweet potato soup, he had a big slab of lovely homemade quiche. We had two pots of tea, earl grey for me, chai for him (he got the cute little robin teapot, I got some kind of strange wilting rabbit!)

Afterwards I had a big slab of coffee cake, and he had a mince pie with brandy butter cream. There are so many amazing homemade cakes at this cafe, I always have difficulty in deciding which one to have! They are all totally, unashamedly decadent, yummy and perfect

mmmmm...i'll just have one of each for now thanks! :D
