a green winged dove and a visit to the barbers

I had my hair cut on Saturday. My husband persuaded me to go to a nearby man's barbers instead of my usual salon (he was paying for it). It was the male version of the place I usually go to, and a ladies hair cut there is £15 cheaper! (although somewhat unfairly, still £10 more than it costs for men!) The man who cut my hair was one of the owners, and said that he sometimes went up to cut hair at the ladies salon and charged an extra £15 there! For the same haircut!
I actually preferred the barbers to the ladies salon, it wasn't as hot and busy, the music was quieter, and it wasn't full of noisy orange women covered in tinfoil sitting around under giant hair baking machines. I didn't get offered coffee and a biscuit while I waited, wasn't given any trashy magazines, and no-one offered to hang up my coat for me or drape it around my shoulders before I left, but I'd rather they didn't do all that anyway!
They focus on each customer one at a time, and only go on to cut someone else's hair when they have finished the last haircut (at the ladies salon they constantly dot back and forth between several customers at once as it takes so long to colour hair!). The same person washed and cut my hair, so there wasn't any little college student getting water down my neck whilst making nervous small talk.
They didn't sell any hair products, so there wasn't any of the usual attempts to persuade me to buy a million pound bottle of hairspray or shampoo. There was no receptionist, so I just paid the barber directly! It all felt very strange, especially as I was surrounded by men and little boys! I left with a haircut I was happy with though I'd go back there again! Although I only get my hair cut every 6-8 months these days, so my next one won't be until well after we have moved house again in August...who knows where I will be then, hopefully not still in the centre of town!
