Salisbury to Edinburgh!

After a very tiring and crazy week of packing, cleaning, and running around with heavy boxes and furniture, we are finally back in Edinburgh, this time to stay! :hat: :drunk:

The journey took 10 hours in the end, setting off at 11am and driving in a rented van all the way from Salisbury to Edinburgh, arriving there at 9pm on Wednesday night. I was so incredibly exhausted and I wasn't even the one doing the driving! I am only now starting to recover, getting bits and pieces unpacked and trying to find things in all the chaos of boxes that have temporarily taken over my parents house

Today my boyfriend went for a second interview at the same company he travelled to Scotland to have an interview with two weeks ago...and he was given the job!! Hurray! :hat:  I'm so happy for him! We both already have jobs to go to and we've only been here for 2 days!

Wednesday morning...finally all packed and ready to go...

My happy driver

Hard work being a passenger!

Finally on the road...and heading in the right direction thanks to GPS! (i.e. not me!)

One of the lovely big motorways that whizzed us through the UK superfast

It started to rain when we got into near lake district, but the sun came out as we drove through it.

The lake district was really beautiful, I want to go back there one day!

The first Scotland sign!

SCOTLAND!!! :D

20 miles to Edinburgh...it was at the end of a rainbow

Happy dog has her Kirsty home again!

Edinburgh

I got back to Salisbury last night, not arriving back until about 1am! I was so tired that I slept for most of the hour and a half drive back from the airport, despite my efforts to stay awake. I hope this will be easier to do when I can actually drive a car myself!!

We were only in Edinburgh for four days, but managed to cram in a lot of walking and exploring around town in that time  My legs were in agony after the first day, no longer being used to climbing up all those Scottish hills! (Salisbury is almost completely flat).

I've never had so many lunches out in one week before, I went to a lovely tapas restaurant on monday, had a posh pizza express pizza on tuesday, my favourite 'fishers in the city' fish restaurant on wednesday, and a vegetarian burger at the new gourmet burger kitchen place on george street...I was only able to do this thanks to a bundle of discount and money off vouchers, and some birthday money from my parents

My mum also cooked lots of lovely home made food for us, which I appreciate all the more now that I know the effort and cost required to make these nice things! It was a really great foody week :D I am back to healthy minimal eating again now though...back to saving my money for the summer holidays!

I was persuaded to go and see a film called 'watchmen', and as it was the only film on that didn't look completely awful I agreed. I expected it to be mind numbingly boring and full of nothing but man-film style violent fight scenes, but I actually quite enjoyed it! Very strange film, bit gruesome and squawk inducing in places, impressive special effects though!

It feels a little strange to be back now, even though I was only away for a few days. I was very aware of being surrounded by Scottish accents again when I first got there, it almost seemed exotic and strange to me after seven months of living in England! Now I am having to adjust back to my Salisbury surroundings again, and having chalky tea water!

Arthur's seat looked beautiful as usual.
I love how Edinburgh has it's own little bit of Scottish wilderness right in the heart of the city

We went to the botanical gardens too.
I'd like to go back there in the summer when it is full of flowers though, it must be even nicer then.

I haven't been along the water of leith riverside path for years! It goes all the way through town and down to the Leith docks, with pubs and cafes to stop off at along the way. I almost forget sometimes that Edinburgh even has a river, even if it is just a little one

It was lovely to see my parents and dog Rhona again after another 3 months away
I'm already looking forward to the next trip to Edinburgh!

Edinburgh

One of the things that I love about Edinburgh is that you can always see the sea from the hills, and catch glimpses of it as you walk around the streets. I love to be near the coast, and always feel strange when I know it's not nearby. It calms me just to see it from a distance, even if I don't actually go to the beach very often. There isn't really a proper beach here anyway, you have to go further along the coast or across the forth road bridge to get one with actual sand, so it's better to look at it from a distance and imagine that there is!

I wish I had a beautiful deserted beach on my doorstep...but then it wouldn't be very deserted or clean or beautiful if it were here beside the city, it would be crammed with people and covered in litter! It's worth travelling out of the way to get to these places I think, paradise is rarely, if ever, just sitting there waiting for you on your doorstep (with the exception of Edinburgh of course )

This picture was taken recently from up beside the castle, looking out over the city to the firth of forth, and Fife in the distance. I love to watch the trains as they happily puff thier way through princes street gardens, on thier way to somewhere exciting and beautiful (or at least, I like to imagine that they are!) I always associate train journeys with holidays and freedom.

I would love one day to travel on one of these famous long train journeys through incredible landscapes, passing through different towns and cities and vast expanses of wilderness. I love the romance of travelling over land. I have been on long distance journeys whilst travelling around Australia, but that was on roads, not tracks. I bet train journeys would be even better, as you can get up and walk about from time to time! Although, it does have the disadvantage that you can't just stop the train whenever you want to jump out to take a photo! Or stop when you happen to pass somewhere that looks like a nice place to have a picnic...

It's so easy to just jump on a plane and be somewhere in the blink of an eye, but the process of getting from A to B should be just as important (if not more so!) than the destination itself.
