sweet nothings...

roasted garlic and mushroom pasta

I made this lovely spicy garlicky mushroomy creamy pasta tonight for my boyfriend, as he has been all bunged up with a cold today, and I thought a bit of garlic would do him good. Also, it might help to prevent me from catching it too!!

I used two whole roasted bulbs of garlic, so I don't think there will be any vampires coming near our flat anytime soon! I have a lemon and nutmeg rice pudding cooking at the moment too, for a late night comfort pudding

rice pudding!

In theory your BF should have eaten garlic raw, not cooked. That because the cooking usually deletes most of the active principles in food. And he should have eaten A LOT of garlic. Then he would have had a bad smell.

I made the same pasta with mushrooms today but since I am lazy I used a ready sauce. I am sure yours was better.

Edit, your trick for not catching the cold involves making your BF stink?

hehe, ah but you see, I stink of garlic now too, so I don't notice

Any garlic is good garlic Lorenzo  and a bulb of garlic per person is quite a lot wouldn't you say?! It does all sorts of nice things for your body, I use it in almost everything I cook (except cakes of course )

This is from wikipedia:
"In 2007, the BBC reported that Allium sativum may have other beneficial properties, such as preventing and fighting the common cold.[23] This assertion has the backing of long tradition in herbal medicine, which has used garlic for hoarseness and coughs.[24] The Cherokee also used it as an expectorant for coughs and croup.[25]"

Yes, I know. But like I said you must eat it raw and you need to eat a lot of it, that is several bulbs a day, every day.
You know, in "herbal medicine" the trick is to concentrate the substances by any means, because in most situations there is few in the natural herb for having a visible effect on the average human body.

This thing of eating garlic all the time would not work for me if I was your BF, I don't want a girl who smells bad.
Aspirine.
Which originally came from a tree as well BTW.

I don't smell bad Lorenzo! :frown: (except for tonight maybe )

Speaking of onions and garlic, do you know why your breathe smells like it? It is because the substances you have eaten, once digested, go in the blood stream and then they pass in the breath through lungs. It does not come from your stomach, both because the stomach is sealed by a valve and because you smell after many hours when the food has been already digested. In theory it would be possible to breathe like onions without having actually eaten onions, if you had the right mix in your blood.

Somebody told me that to improve your breathe you must chew some coffee grains but I don't have any so I can't try.

I remember eating about 20 roasted garlic cloves once all in one meal...apparently the next day at work both my skin and my breath was exuding the lovely pungent aroma of garlic

Coffee grains for bad breath? You mean ground up coffee beans or instant coffee? bleugh, I haven't heard of that one...wouldn't your breath then just smell of coffee?!

I have tried chocolate coated coffee beans before (unaware that was what they were) and didn't like them at all, they are meant for making coffee with, not crunching on the beans!

Chewing fennel seeds is meant to be good for the breath too...

Regular roasted coffee grains.
I chewed some many years ago and they aren't that bad. Problem is only my granny had those grains in the house to make coffee on the spot. You don't have to chew many, just two or three when you have eaten onions or garlic.
But I can't guarantee the result, maybe you could breath of both onion and coffee

And you see, you can be stinky at times
Think of your colleagues at work, having "garlic girl" around all day
