sweet nothings...

sushi heaven

Today I have been making sushi. It takes about me four hours from start to finish, but it's worth every second  I love the whole process of meticulously preparing everything bit by bit, I find it quite hypnotic and relaxing. I love rolling and chopping up the sushi, like making little edible sculptures. Then after a hard afternoon's sushi making I get to sit back and admire my efforts with some warm sake and some eye watering wasabi  perfect.

Japanese food is beautiful to look at. When I go to Tokyo I always get amazed to see how beautiful they present the food.
Btw, the Japanese food reminded me about the nice Totoro cupcakes I saw in "A cat in the Kitchen" blog. I think you should try to make a few of those also. :D

omg... you made those? thats amazing!

GrantTLC 24. October 2007, 10:34

They look absolutely mouth-watering...:O You're on your own with the sake, though - not exactly a taste I want to experience again!

kirstycat 24. October 2007, 17:49

Did you warm up your sake first? I know that it can taste horrible when it's cold, but as soon as it is warmed up in a pan it is transformed into something amazing! Although you do have to be careful as it gets absorbed into your system almost instantly due to it being body temperature! It goes straight to your head :drunk:

GrantTLC 24. October 2007, 19:39

It was warm, yes; but I vaguely remember it tasted similar to Potcheen, the Irish fermented-potato spirit? More alcohol than actual taste.

Maybe I should have another go and refresh my memory...! :D

PS: my mouth is still watering at those sushi you made: I might look into having a go myself, now that I'm on my new health kick! They'd be perfect for packed lunches at work!

You can get all the bits you need to make it in Tesco now!
...seaweed, sushi rice, wasabi, rice vinegar, mirin, japanese soy sauce...and of course, sake  (which tastes of rice!)
It takes ages to make but it's really quite easy.

Lol @ your continued devotion to sake.

And thanks for letting me know I won't have to hunt too hard for the ingredients.

I discovered sushi and sushimi this year. It's incredible but after almost 39 years of living you tried a new food... I loved the taste of the sea vegetables (i'm from a seaside town) and I found delicious every single taste of fish and rice. I only hope someday I'll find the patience (and the courage) for try to do it by my own. Cheers.... and greetings for your "member of the week"

kirstycat 20. February 2009, 23:09

It's not as difficult as you think it is  It just takes a while to make!
thanks Jrcoruna
