Crisis of Japanese environment
Tuesday, 1. November 2005, 15:19:29
After World War II, our industry has rapidly developed. As a result, we have destroyed our environment. There are many pollutions -- Air pollution, Global warming, Water polution, Acid rain, Smog, Greenhous effect, Dangerous waste, etc.. -- these pollutions damege not only our atmosphere, water but also the natural food chain, water and marine creatures and human health seriously.
Do you think Japan still has lots nature ?? NO ! over 40 % of our forest is plantation. Many kinds of Japanese original animals such as Japanese wolf have already extincted. Although 25 % of living things naturally extincted, 75 % were extincted by human. Human is also a menber of living things. therefore, that environmental problems concern with human life.

Oh there are too many things to say about ecology, environment and human destructing nature.
I don't think that Japan is the only country in this position, but it's an island, very industrial, and there is (too) many people living here and it's needed space !
Money rules the world, that's why USA and some other "rich" countries don't ratifiate de Kyoto protocol to the detriment of the planet. Isn't that a typical human reaction ?
This is the dilemma : economy or ecology ? I think that it's possible to combinate the two things, more intelligently than today, and i think it's THE challenge for us and our children before it's too late !

yes, indeed, Japan is not the only country that has those environmental problems. it's the problem all over the world.
We have a dilemma about economy and ecology as you say. and there may be some good ways to combine economy and ecology. but don't you think it's too late when we find it and practice it ? The pollution level has already reached as that protocol cannot prevent, I think. Besides, it costs to restore destroyed environment much more than to pollute it. Study of green chemistry is progressing, but even the treatment using green chemistry costs much more than making harmful chemicals and release them into the air or water. This is about non-living things. About living things, it's more terrible. for example, Japanese ibis extincted about 34 years ago. so we took Russian ibis to Japan and protect them in nature. 1 ibis eats 500-800g per day, but our nature cannot keep that amount of frogs or loach for them any longer. so we have to feed them -- it costs about 260,000 USD per year. About Japanese wolf .. we have no way to protect them, because they are no longer living in earth. Although we notice that we destroy ecosystem pyramid, we still kill small living things everywhere such as rice field and field with agricultural chemicals. Our food are grown up under the condition that any living things except human cannnot live.
I am afraid in thinking of this : How terrible food we eat, how terrible air we have !

Still, it's better than China, at least. That's where Japanese companies go when they're not allowed to pollute their homeland anymore...

There is always hope.
Why ? Because all around the world more and more people are aware of ecological problems. I remember when I was a kid, in the 1960's, watching a French TV program "La France Défigurée" (Disfigure France), showing how people were just trowing their waste in the nature. We were very few kids to whatch this TV show.
Why still ? Hope is also our kids, it's our parental role to make them understand that we need to respect the nature.
Why again ? Because being non-ecological will cost a lot to rich countries. "Always hit where it hurts", in this case, the wallet ! Soon the cost of not taking care about waste will be so high that it will be economicaly profitable to manage waste, to preserve forests, to stop killing animals because we "need" room for our cows, sheep, goats, etc.
Why encore (again
So, what to concluded ?
It's long, it's painful, we will probably not see the results during our lifetime, but, in the end, we will make it. We just need to continue harassing companies and goverments and their conscience too is starting (yes, I know, slowly, so slowly) to change.
Let's keep up the good work. Don't be pessimistic that exactly what our opponants hope.
