Best Freeware 2008: Opera, Mozilla Firefox, and… Maxthon?

, , ,

PCMedia, as always, announced the best freeware and hardware by the end of the year Opera and Mozilla Firefox seem to make a great competition. They are two of the bests!

It’s said that Mozilla Firefox has an effective pop-up blocker. Besides, this browser only needs 55 MB of our RAM to open 25 windows at once. Hmm… But in fact, my PC gets hang and the “Network Timeout” page appears if I open more than 15 windows. Well, maybe the problem is my PC or the internet connection, not the software.

The comment for Opera is not so good. Although the popularity is comparable to Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer, from the data in some sites, Mozilla Firefox has more users that Opera. I can see it… actually I myself use Opera to access my blog only. I prefer Mozilla Firefox for any download activity because if the download process is suddenly paused or stopped, it can be resumed without re-downloading the downloaded part of the file. While in Opera, it should be started from zero. But for the speed, Opera wins!

From the benchmark by PCMedia, Opera 9.6 shows a much better performance than the previous version, though. Don’t give up, Opera! Keep going forward! GANBATTE!

One thing that makes me so surprised is Maxthon 2.1.4.433, which also takes a place in Best Freeware 2008 as one of the best web browsers. The engine is based of IE’s. Wow, Internet Explorer works so slowly, eh? And I even never hear the name Maxthon before! Oops… According to PCMedia, this browser has a customable interface and tabbed browsing. It has other features like mouse gesture, privacy protection, AD Hunter, RSS hunter, etc. It doesn’t sounds so special. I’m not sure this browser can work well. But I think I should try it myself before judging.

I Miss the Previous Opera Community

, ,

The new layout is cool, actually, especially for the menu bar. But I really miss previous one. For me it was much more organized although the design is too plain. Simple is cool! I really feel so lucky to find the screenshot of it when I was organizing my drives. I even forget that I ever took a print-screen.

If you have the screenshot of a full page of the previous layout, would you like to share it with me, please?

KisenoSky - Daydream Note

I made a new blog in Blogger since my friends mostly use it for blogging. But making a blog there doesn’t mean that I will leave Opera Community. I still prefer Opera for a serious public blog. While the one in Blogspot is just for fun because it’s blogging system is too simple. Besides, Blogger doesn’t provide more pages for more needs. Huh!

I mostly write about my spare time, personal matters, and any unparticular stuff. It’s more like diary than the content of my Opera blog. There will be no computer, internet, graphic design, and programming. No other word but just more personal.

Google Chrome: A Threat for the Market

,

Google once again becomes Microsoft’s serious competitor, a new threat for web browser market, by officially releasing Google Chrome its first web browser that’s still in beta stage now.

One of its special features is the process manager and memory for each tab, like Task Manager in Windows. Process manager enables us to see which tab uses the most memory, and if one of the tabs causes hang or crash, it won’t affect the other tabs and the browser will keep working properly.

The engine of Google Chrome is WebKit, a light HTML engine rendering that is previously used by Apple Safari, developed by Apple, which is a part of the KDE open source project.

However, the developers of Google Chrome has decided not to use SquirrelFish, Apple’s high performance runtime. Google prefers using V8, a unique virtual machine developed by the researchers in Denmark. And V8 can work really fast!

I have tried Google Chrome, IE, Firefox, and Opera to open My Opera and PsoPlayer-san’s blog. One browser three tabs. Chrome amazingly works the fastest.

Making Wiki in Google Sites

,

Wiki is a term for a website that allow anyone to contribute, add or edit the content of the website. That’s why, community becomes the power of a wiki site. One thing that often gets criticized is about the accuracy. Maybe it’s since the collaboration system is created in a wiki site. Since wiki can be written by anyone, can the accuracy be guaranteed?

In fact, there’s a wiki site like Wikipedia. It begins from a community that contributes their knowledge little by little. And now, Wikipedia have been the biggest online encyclopedia, the first destination for the people who look for any reference.

So, how can we make a wiki site?

There are many choices. One of them is by using wiki engine/software. To use it, we don’t need to learn the details of programming or database language, except for any advance modification. The wiki software we can use are pmWiki, MediaWiki, etc. Check the comparison of the software first!

Besides wiki software, you can also use a wiki site hostings. One of them is the one I use, Google Sites. I have tried to make one here.

Google Sites not only provides wiki feature. Here, we can also combine another features such as Google Docs, Picasa, and even YouTube video. Making wiki site in Google Sites is very easy because Google have provided all infrastructure we need, so we just need to work with the content and appearance. And here are the steps:

  1. Go to Google Sites and login by using Google account.
  2. Click “Create new site”, and fill the fields: site name, description, share setting, and theme.
  3. The site is done. And the image below is the screenshot of my wiki site, brand new created.
  4. To make a new page, click “Create new page”, then we start writing the page by adding text or using Google application such as Calendar, Document, Spreadsheet, Picasa, etc.
  5. We can also invite other people to be collaborators. Click “Site Setting”, then “invite people as collaborator”. Besides collaborator, we can also invite people as owner or viewer.
Check Google Sites' Blog to know the most update news about Google Sites.
