Asked for help from FSF to launch campign to balance perspective at the IN DOE regarding Free vs Proprietary software. We'll see where that goes.
Here's the note:
Here's the note:
Our LUG (CINLUG) hosted a presentation by an Indiana DOE
leader last November (Mike Huffman)
who is promoting the use of free software in IN schools.
(IN ACCESS Program) This led to a meeting with the
Asst. Superintendent yesterday.
Next Tuesday our Rotary Club is hosting a
presentation by the IN Superintendent of Public Instruction
(Dr. Suellen Reed.) The Asst Supt and Mike
Huffman told me that the most urgent need in the campaign to promote the
use of free software in Indiana is to provide an alternative perspective
to the director. Presently, she is informed almost exclusively by
advocates of proprietary software. Since her world is constructed by
those views, the future of free software in IN is in jeopard DESPITE great
results and COMMON SENSE.
They told me there is NO PR campaign for free software. Can the FSF
help? If I construct a grassroots effort to inject the free software
message into the public discourse on education, are there materials &
resources available you can point me to? I think I can get something
started using our existing connection and advocates. But facts and
research would be needed. Can you help?
Thanks,
