Day 1. Thursday
I arrived on Thursday morning at 4am to Budapest. Bence took me from the bus terminal, we drove home to him and slept some hours. At 13 o’clock we took Laura and get off to our trip to Venice. From Nagykanizsa (in the south part of Hungary, near the border to Slovenia) we picked up Orsi, the girl friend of Bence. We drove well until the Slovenian-Italian border where the rain started. What a rain…Bence had really big problems to see something on the highway… But finally at 9pm we arrived to Venice-Mestre. The Navigation System in Bence’s car (I was it

) worked well so we arrived to the hotel. The room was ok. After taking shower and eating something we got into the bad… It still rained…
Day 2. Friday
We woke up early, went down for breakfast. Hm… my idea of breakfast is totally different than that of the Italians. We had only cookies, coffee and some orange juice… no ham, no cheese, no muesli…
After breakfast we took our luggage and drove around 100km to the west, to Alonte. On the way the sun came out and from that moment we had sunshine all the weekend
The PWT (Park World Tour) qualification was held. I was a very disappointed… I thought the PWT is only in parks, towns, not in forests and wine yards. Before the start I was a little bit nervous

I think that’s why I made not the best route choice to the 1st control and made a small mistake (I haven’t seen the road going to the right

) to the 2nd control. From there I had no problems with orienteering only with my shoes. After the rain the days before the competition, the forest was very slippery. I had big problems getting up the hill (we had to climb the same hill on the same place twice

) with my tarmac running shoes…After losing a lot of time and energy on the forest part , I burned out for the last controls… Finally I finished 39th. I had no goal for that competition, because I knew that it was impossible for me to qualify to the Final, but I hoped to have some better result and a better run than this… maybe next year

The others had good competitions

Bence finished 3rd in M35 class and Laura won the Open class

On the way back to Venice we made a sightseeing stop in Padua. We visited the Basilica of Saint Anthony and other beautiful places in that town. I think it would have been a better idea to make the PWT in Padua than in Alonte… it would have been much more interesting.
From Padua we drove to the Venice airport, left the car in the airport parking space (it’s much cheaper there, than in Venice) and drove into the town by bus. From the Piazalle Romale we had to go by foot, with all our bags to our accommodation. Here we had also a beautiful room, only a little bit to warm

We lived only 3 minutes far away from the Rialto bridge

After taking some dinner Laura and me made a walk to the Rialto bridge and to the St. Mark’s Square. It was so beautiful walking in the night in Venice
Day 3. Saturday
Bence and Orsi planned to make only sightseeing on Saturday. I planned to run the open competition of the PWT final. Laura came with me

We had to wake up early in the morning and walked to the Romale Square, where Janko Tamas took us with his car and drove us to Lonigo the competitions place. Once again it was interesting to see Venice in the morning, without tourists

The competition in Lonigo was better than the day before, but we had also a part with wine yards

Once again I lost time there (I had no shoes with needles

). In the middle part I made a small route choice mistake… I don’t know my result, because we had to drive back to Venice after I finished the competition… and I still haven’t found the results on the internet. If somebody found them (not the PWT final results, the results of the Open competition) please send me the link…
At 13 o’clock we arrived back to Venice. Tamas and his girlfriend took the “Venice bus” (the ship

), Laura and me walked to the Arsenale sports hall. Laura decide also to run the Park-O competition

We had some time left to relax a little bit. We made the warm up together, because she started one minute in front of me. I started very good

My legs felt good and I found the contact to the map already from the first meters (it was my first competition in Venice). On control 4 I already catched the other Romanian guy started one min in front of me. He could run only one control with me… I ran very good, but later on I felt that I’m getting slower and slower… I got tired, made a 10s map reading mistake. Finally I finished on the 6th place

12s behind the 2nd, 7 behind the 3rd , 2 behind the 4th and 1s behind the 5th. On the last control the 2nd,3rd and 4th placed had the same time, the 5th placed 1s before them and I was 3s behind. With a better finish (it was a very long finish, more than one minute) maybe I would have been on the podium. Watching the split times I can be really satisfied with the result

I was in the lead almost half of the race and lost on the last part. The race was longer than a normal sprint (4.4km). At around 3km (like a normal sprint) I was still 2nd

This gives me a lot of self confidence for the next year

Laura took a very good decision to run the competition, she won the short class

Two races, two wins

Not bad

She won a bottle of wine and some cookies.
After the competition we walked back to our accommodation (we tried to walk without using a map, but after some time we decided that’s better to take a map, because with this speed we won’t arrive home

) ). There we met Bence and Orsi and went out to eat a pizza. I had my first really Italian pizza
After the pizza we four walked to the Rialto to make some pictures. I walked together with Laura to the Frari Church and to some other places
Day 4. Sunday
Once again we woke up early in the morning

We went to the morning mess in the Saint Mark’s Basilica. It was very touching… sitting in the almost 1000 years old church and listening to the Italian mess

After the mess we took breakfast (almost the same things like the first day). Bence left earlier, because he started in the first minutes. I had a starting time in the middle and Laura in the end. After relaxing some minutes I took my running clothes. I took an old map of Venice and made my warm up running from our accommodation to the start area, trying to get in contact with the map.
The competition
So many competitors… such a big start…wow… I was impressed already from the start. But I had to concentrate on the competition. I started in the ME

I took the map and run away… It was so good

I enjoyed the race

The first part was not so hard in orienteering, we had to run as fast as possible. The “problem” with the tourists started when I arrived in the area of the railway station. There I took a longer route

Later on the harder part started… more tourists and more narrow paths, bridges and squares. I felt very-very good in orienteering

Every time I arrived to a control I already had planned before the route to the next point

(yes, I know that this is the usually way of orienteering on a high level, but for me it was the first time I could make it during a whole competition). To control 7 I made a 5s mistake. I counted badly, took the corner to the left but saw that there is no bridge

) After two steps I turned around and took the next road where the bridge really was

) After the half of the race, I started to feel tired. I felt in my legs the 4 competitions in 3 day and the sightseeing in Padua and Venice. I got slower and slower, but I could hold on my concentration

After 25 controls I had to run only to the last control. I knew the way, running out to the sea, running up and down 3 bridges and there’s the finish line. After 69min and 21s I finished my first Venice orienteering competition

My goal was to finish in the top 50. Unfortunately I missed this goal with a few seconds. I finished on the 55th place. It’s not so bad for the first time

Next year I hope I will hold my fast starting speed for a longer time. I’m very satisfied with the orienteering, map reading part

The truth is, that this kind of competition is similar to ski orienteering. For me the route choice and map reading was not so hard

And for Oystein Kvaal Osterbo it was also a good race. He won

He’s also a top ski orienteerer

The others made also good competitions. Laura finished 6th in W20 and Bence 10th in M35. For Laura it was also the first time she took part in Venice, but she also enjoyed the whole weekend exactly like me

After my race I waited for Laura to arrive, after that we made our cool down by running back to the accommodation. After taking shower, we took our bags and walked to the bus station, from there we took the bus to the airport. After 7 hours driving we arrived finally to Budapest.
I slept one more night at Bence’s home. On Monday I made a few hours walk with Laura in Budapest and finally I took the bus in the evening back home.
This was the story of a superb weekend in Venice. Running between all those tourist, on those narrow roads, over bridges (I ran over 67 bridges

), it’s amazing… Everybody who practices orienteering has to take part once in his life at the competition there!
I will be there next year!
Maps and picuters will be added tomorrow.
Bye
