World Orienteering Championships 2009

World Championships Sprint Qualification. Summary will come later...

Final preparation

The last weeks I was totally concentrated on the World Championships. The last days of July Laura came to me to Romania. Together we went up to Harghita Bai for a training camp. It was the first time I was there in the summer (ok, I was there last summer for roller ski trainings, but the first time for a running training camp). We made interesting trainings, for example running up till the top of the mountain (from 1300m to 1750m) or running short uphill sprints.

The week after the training camp we relaxed a little bit, made some hiking in the mountains around the town.

Last weekend I ran the middle distance race at the Mentor Silva cup in Predeal. It wasn’t my best race of the summer :frown: I made a lot of mistakes… Sunday I started the long distance race, but short cuted it. I ran only a shorter part with more controls. It was a good map reading training.
Sunday afternoon I drove up to Targu Mures, where Laura and I were invited to a wedding. Monday morning we drove to Eger.

I decided to come to Hungary one week before the World Championships to make my last preparation together with my personal coach, Boros Zoli. It’s better to be here to talk with him, to get more information from him. Now I’m in Sopron, Sunday we will travel back to Eger and on Monday the “party” will begin P:

I’ m waiting my entire friends on the 20th of August in Miskolc to support me during my Sprint race

Bye

One month left!

The final countdown for the World Championships started. I have exactly one month left till my sprint race in Miskolc. This week I will still train here in Miercurea Ciuc. Next Monday Laua will come to me and we will go up to Harghita Bai for a short training camp. After the training camp we will be one more week here in Ciuc, than I will run the Mentor Silva Cup in Predeal and on Monday, 10th of August we will travel to Sopron. There I will make my final preparation for the big race

Bye

My most successful weekend of the season: 4 races - 4 wins

First:

I finished my exams!!!!!! Today I finished my second university year. Hm… truly it’s the 3rd, because the year in Zürich is not counted here in Romania.

Last weekend I took part at the Pannon Days. Friday morning I arrived to Budapest, there I met Laura. Some club mates of her (Eszter and Sanyi - http://dilettanstajfuto.blogspot.com/ ) took us to Veszprem. There we had a sprint competition:

Sprint race: 15.57; 3,5 km; avg pulse: 174; max pulse: 193; avg speed: 4:24; max speed: 2:12; climb: 10;
Mobile-O: 5.31; 1.2 km; avg pulse: 188; max pulse: 196; avg speed: 4:28; max speed: 2:52; climb: 65;

As you know, I’m preparing for the Sprint World Championships, so we (my coach – Boros Zoli and me) decided to run the M21 B short races, not Elite.I was very satisfied with my sprint race. I made only one small mistake: I saw the stairs, but I couldn’t find them on the map. I ran around the building instead running up directly the stairs – around 25 seconds. In the last part of the race I was quite tired, so I lost again some seconds because of the slow speed, but with all these seconds lost, I won 57s in front of Oszi. Laura finished 2nd in the W Elite race. After the race we run the mobile-o competition. First I guided her via mobile phone to the control points, than she guided me  We made a really good teamwork P: so we could win our first cup together  (it was a better race, than last year with Zozo, but that race was a lot funnier ) ).

Friday evening we put on our tent in the event center near Csesznek castle. We found a superb place for our tent with a beautiful panorama

Saturday a long distance race was on the plan. The elite race had really long races, but I had only 5.6km in the B Short class P: I started very late, but made once again a good race  The 40s mistake was not a big problem for winning the race with more than 3 minutes. Laura finished on the 3rd place in the WE World Ranking Event race  She won a beautiful pot
The map is damaged, I can't put it online :frown:
Long distance race: 43.13; 6.3 km; avg pulse: 180; max pulse: 192; avg speed: 6:15; max speed: 2:13; climb: 220;

In the afternoon we visited the Csesznek castle. We were lucky and we joined a group to listen to the guide. After the visit we watched the biggest race of the weekend: the beer relay :D In the evening a small party was organized for the competitors. I was focused on the competitions so after a short party time we got to sleep much earlier than the others. P:

Sunday was a long distance (once again 5.6km) chasing start competition. I started with more than 7 minutes advantage. I knew, I have to make a controlled race, slower but without big mistakes. I did my job very well, with only one mistake in the last part of the race, won the day with 2 minutes, so finally I had around 9 minutes advantage in the finish. Laura started second, but with only one minute in front of the 3rd competitor (Szivak Ildi). She made a good tactical race, she started slower, Ildi catched her, but on the last uphill Laura was faster, so she finished 2nd overall  Congratulations to her very good result

Long distance race: 44.47; 6.5 km; avg pulse: 175; max pulse: 188; avg speed: 6:27; max speed: 2:19; climb: 190;

My plan was to travel home after the race, but unfortunately the bus was full, so I had to stay one more day in Hungary. I travelled with Laura to Sopron. Monday morning we ran together with Laura and Zoli around Sopron (55:08, around 10km, avg pulse: 154, max pulse: 172).

Yesterday afternoon I travelled by train from Sopron to Budapest and from there by bus home to Miercurea Ciuc. I arrived here at 6.45, at 7.20 I took the train to Brasov, because today I had my last exam.

So this was my best weekend of this foot-o season.

Bye

Miskolc, I will be there!!!

Once again after long time I’m writing on my blog.
I’m still learning, I have 2 more exams (one tomorrow and one next Tuesday). Till now I’m satisfied with my exam results.
Yesterday I finally got the decision for the World Championships:

I WILL RUN THE SPRINT RACE!!!!

It was a big fight between Zozo and me, but I ran exactly the time I had to run on the 4000 m, to beat him and qualify for the World Championships  I will be one of the few orienteers participating in both ski-o and foot-o World Championships this year (Oystein Kvaal Osterbro and Liisa Antila are the other two competitors I know running both winter and summer).

With my trainings I’m on the right way  I had a good June, with balanced weeks. Last week Laura was here for one week  We made interesting trainings together  For example we ran up from Bradet chalet to Harghita Bai or we bike to the Szepviz Lake. It was funny to train with somebody, not only alone like every other day :frown:

I ran the Romanian Cup two weekends ago in Baia Mare. I finished 6th, with almost no mistakes on the long distance, but I was a little bit slow and some small mistakes in the middle distance. I’m satisfied with my actual results. Last years in May-June I was far away of the top Romanian athletes. After I finish my exams I will have time to concentrate more and more on training, preparing for Miskolc

Tomorrow, after the exam, I will travel to Hungary to run the Pannon Days in Veszprem/Csesznek. Friday afternoon a sprint race will be held in Veszprem historical downtown. I’m really looking for that race  It will be big fun running in the city P:

Last weekend the IOF Event Advisor (Juraj Nemec) visited us to check the facilities for next year’s competitions. We visited some hotels, competition center, opening ceremony place and start-finish areas. He was satisfied with our work till now  Saturday morning we made a short press conference  Here you can read about it (it’s only in Hungarian):

“Csíkszereda lesz a házigazdája a jövő évi ifjúsági sítájfutó világbajnokságnak.

A verseny nagyrészt (95-99%) előkészített, (motoros szánnal fektetett) sínyomokon zajlik. Sítájfutásban azok a nemzetek a legjobbak a világon, akik sífutásban, biatlonban, illetve jégkorongban jeleskednek. Romániában évek óta a Csúcs-család és a csíkiak uralják a hazai sítájfutó versenyeket. Csúcs Klaus több nemzetközi sítájfutó versenyen is a mezőny első felében végzett.
Akkor 30 ország képviselői érkeztek a Székelyföldre. Dobos László„ Csiki Hirlap, 2009.06.27

Still alive :P and mountianbike race

I’m still alive

My training for the summer competitions is going well.
Last weeks I made some interesting runs. For example I ran up to the Tampa mountain in Brasov or ran 30 times 150m fast + 50m slow.

Saturday I started at the 5th edition of the “Ciuc mountains mountain bike marathon”. It was a really hard race (41 km with 1100m climbing). More than 200 competitors participated. The uphill`s were very good for me, but I lost a lot on the downhill`s… Finally I finished somewhere around the 60th place (official results will be online only tomorrow). It was fun to run such a race  I really enjoyed it.

Now I’m a little bit stressed, because next Monday I start my summer exams :frown: and I have to learn, but I will continue the trainings (and hopefully write more often on my blog P: )

Bye

Not my best weeks...

After a long time I write once again on my blog. A lot happened the last two weeks. I had some up’s but more down’s …
Let’s start from the first weekend:

Craiova Sprint

On Thursday (7th of May), Zozo and me drove down to Craiova for Friday’s two sprint qualification races. The races were organized it the biggest park of Craiova. I was really lucky with the start draw, because Zozo (we are fighting for the 3rd place for the WOC) stated 2 min in front of me. He had the bigger pressure. At the 5th and 6th control he made mistakes, so I catched him  He was faster than me but made once again mistakes so I passed him for some meters. On the last part of the race I got tired, couldn’t run fast so he finished 36 seconds before me. I was satisfied with my race: no mistakes and 1.24 better than Zozo.
In the afternoon we had one more race. It was quite hot… I was not in my best mood. I felt tired from the beginning and to the 6th control I made a one minute mistake. The control was in the forest in a small hole. The problem was with the 1m high grass in the forest :frown: . After one minute of searching, finally I found it. Later on I made one more 15 s mistake :frown:( In the end Zozo beat me with 20 s… he was better in the afternoon. That’s it…
After the races we drove home to Miercurea Ciuc.
On Saturday we run a mountain running competition. The total distance was 12km (6 laps à 2 km’s). After 2 laps I stopped. I felt very tired after the sprint races.

Hungarian Sprint Championships

Last weekend I was in Pecs, Hungary for their sprint championships. Saturday morning the qualification race was held in Komlo, near Pecs. The first part was in the forest, the last part in the town. Unfortunately I had once again problems with a hole in the forest :frown: where I lost more than 2 minutes… I finished 11th, 32 seconds behind the last A final qualification place… You can imagine how disappointed I was…
The final was held in the town (without any forest part P: ). I knew before the race, that we (the B finalists) will have the same course like the “big” A finalists. After the bad quail race it was hard for me to get a final mood. But I managed it, I made a good final (not my best ever race, but good). My final time 18.42, would have been the 11th place in the A final…
On Sunday I was spectator for the Team Championships..
This afternoon I will drive to Cluj. Tomorrow morning I will run 4000m on the stadium. That will decide who will go to the World Championships: Zozo or me…

Bye

Wednesday...

Today I made my last fast training before Friday’s sprint competitions.

I ran 2.5 km warm up and then I started the fast part of the training. The plan was 90 seconds fast 4 times. My first lap was 99 s, the second 94 s, third 97 s (here I had to slow down because of somebody crossing my road) and the last 89 s. I felt quite good during the training. I had only problems getting used with my new shoes. Probably I won’t use them on Friday.

Tomorrow afternoon I will drive down to Craiova. There we will have two sprint races on Friday. Both will be qualification races for the World Championships this summer in Hungary.

Bye

Winning my first race of the year

Last weekend I ran the TIPO Cup in Gyöngyöstarján, Hungary.
Because of this weekend’s sprint qualification races and next weekend’s Hungarian Sprint Championships, I decided not to run Elite class (Friday and Saturday long distance). My choice was M21B Short. Unfortunately I still have no scanner, so I can’t show you maps :frown: Friday I had a 6.2 km race. I made a mistake already to the first control. My mistakes continued during the whole race :frown: I finished 10th, 7 minutes behind the winner. I won 5 intermediate times, but lost around 11-12 minutes with mistakes.

Saturday we had once again a 6.2 km race. This time I made a much better race. I still had some small mistakes and was a little bit slow in the middle part. With my 3rd place I climbed up to the 6th place total time of both days.

The final race day was 3,7 km “middle distance”. I started almost last, so I already knew some times in the finish before my race. I knew, I have to run 23.50 to get onto the podium. I started fast, continued fast and finished faster  I lost only some seconds because an SI unit didn’t work with the new SI cards. My final time was 24.38, so I lost the podium by some seconds, but won Sunday's race. Despite only the 4th place, I’m very satisfied with my weekend. I made a good race on the most important day with the biggest pressure on me.

I gave all my best on the finish P:

Yesterday I made an easy run in Budapest, only to get the tiredness out of my legs. In the afternoon we went out to buy Laura new running shoes. Despite our plan to buy her shoes I brought first new shoes :D But finally we found also good Nike shoes for Laura
My new shoes:

Preparing for the Tipo

Yesterday I tried to make a fast training (1:30 fast, 1:30 slow), but unfortunately my legs started to hurt after 3 runs, so I decided to cancel the training. I ran home and took a warm bath.
This morning my training plan showed me a short run with some 120-150 m sprints. My legs felt much better, but still not 100%.
This night I will travel to Budapest. Tomorrow eveing we will drive up to Eger. From Friday to Sunday I will participate at the Tipo Cup. I'm still preparing for sprint races thats why I decided to run the M21 B short class.

Bye

Running up to the Somylo peak

Yesterday I made a shorter run, only 51 minutes. First I made the warm up, than I made 100 m sprints up on a hill 12 times. I felt really good  The last two sprints were the fastest.

Today I had planned a long run. I decided to up to the top of the Somlyo mountain. Totally I run 97 min. The sun was shining, I enjoyed the training. Now I feel a little bit tired, but tomorrow I will have a free day.

12 days in Hungary

Finally I have some time to write on my blog. Sorry for the delay… Since my last post a lot happened to me.

First the Postas weekend

Friday afternoon we ran a sprint competition in Eger. The whole Thursday afternoon we walked with Laura in the old city of Eger to see the interesting places for next day’s competition. Than the surprise: the competition was around the park and spa :D I made a good race till control nr. 16… I tried to enter to the spa through the main entrance, but that was closed, so I had to go around to the open gate (other competitors tried also the same P: ). Unfortunately I lost almost 1:30… But luckily I beat Zozo once again with 2 s, so I finished 3rd between the Romanians. That means I’m still on the right way to qualify for the WOC. Saturday I gave all my best in the middle distance qualification, qualified for the A final, but was totally dead for the final… Sunday’s long distance race was a big fight for me… but I finished the race!!! I’m not used to run long distance races… Monday I had no relay, so I was only spectator and personal coach for Laura P: Summary I had a hard weekend. The competitions were tough , but I enjoyed the whole Easter weekend in Eger with Laura and her family.

Here you can watch a short interview I gave Miskolc TV : http://postas.mtfsz.hu/postaskupa/

After the sprint race

The week in Sopron

Monday evening we drove from Eger to Sopron. I was there till Saturday morning. During this time we made some good runs together, we biked once, we made sightseeing (Laura showed me how beautiful Sopron is  ) and we enjoyed our holiday together.

After running in Sopron

Semmelweis Cup

Saturday morning Agi (Lauras mother), Zoli (Agi’s fiancé) and me drove down to the Semmelweis Cup, near Veszprem. Unfortunately Laura couldn’t come with us, because she has this weekend (today and tomorrow) German language exam and she had to learn (please cross your finger for her  ).
The competition was a long distance race. I started well, I had a good speed, made no big mistakes till cp nr 7. There I made my biggest mistake of the year (yet P: ), I lost around 5 minutes. From there on I couldn’t find a good tempo, made more and more mistakes. Finally I finished with 92 min on 12 km. Unfortunately during the race I hit my right knee, so I couldn’t run Sundays competition :frown: Harkanyi Zoli (not Agi’s fiancé P: he is Boros Zoli) won both days. Sunday we didn’t know that I wouldn’t run, he made mistakes and was expecting to be catched by me  He was surprised when he heard that I skipped the competition. I helped organizing, because my Hungarian club (HSE Szentendre) organized Sunday’s competition.
Saturday evening Agi and Zoli took me into Veszprem and showed me the beautiful old city. Eger, Sopron and Veszprem: 3 beautiful places in one week  The night to Sunday we slept in tents  It was a little bit cold, but funny to camp already in April. After the competition Zoli drove me up to Budapest. Laura was already there, we took lunch together and later on in the afternoon I took the OPEN WORLD bus home to Miercurea Ciuc.
I had beautiful 10 days in Hungary together with Laura, Agi and Zoli. Thanks a lot!

Back home

Monday morning I arrived well home. This week I have no lessons  , but I had a lot to work. So I had no time to write, but I had some time to make trainings: Monday a slow jog together with my father, Tuesday a faster run with 20min competition tempo, yesterday a shorter run.
This weekend the Romanian ultra long distance will be held (without me P: ). I decided not to take part. A 23 km race is not the best training for sprint competitions.
Next weekend I will travel once again to Hungary  , to Eger. I will run the Tipo Cup. The Tipo weekend is a little bit too tough for me (Friday and Saturday long, Sunday middle), that’s why I decided to skip the first long and run only the mircosprint Friday afternoon.

During this week I also made a lot of preparation for next year’s big ski-o races. We got an offer for the transportation, for the speaker (Kocsik Arpi) and we started to contact the hotels. We also got the first sponsor  : Nordenmark company from Sweden (www.nordenmark.com)

Preparing for the Postas

This morning I arrived to Budapest. Now I just finished a longer sprint competition (4.3 km) in the Nepliget park here in Budapest. It was a good training for Friday’s sprint race in Eger. That race will be one of the 6 qualification races for the World Championships for the sprint.

Tomorrow afternoon I will travel together with Laura to Eger, we will make a short walk in the town to see the key points of the city P: As I already told you, Friday afternoon will be the race in Eger. Saturday, Sunday and Monday will be held the Postas cup half way between Eger and Miskolc. It will be an interesting competition; I just mention three of the competitors: Daniel Hubmann, Matthias Merz, Tero Föhr. The whole Swiss, Finnish, Norwegian and German National teams will be here… I have no luck with the starting order… Friday I start 3rd and Saturday I will open the middle distance competition :frown:

Bye

Skiing in April

My day started with an exam :frown: I passed it without problems P:
After some hours I took the train and came home. My brother will have tomorrow a cross country competition. He will represent his school. To have one ski training before the competition (he didn’t ski the whole winter) we decided to drive up to Harghita and ski a little bit. The weather was superb… Here is a picture… I think it’s enough to see the picture and you can understand how it was

Tomorrow morning I will go with Uwe to the competition and will enjoy the beautiful weather

Strazilovo Cup

The foot-o season started last week in Serbia at the Strazilovo Cup.
I travelled together with Laura from Budapest down to Novi Sad. There we lived near the Danube  The house and the surroundings were really beautiful. Friday evening we watched the sunset from the Danube bank. It was so romantic

Saturday we had a middle distance competition. It was my first competition this spring, so my plan was to make a competition without any mistakes. I was quite slow, but I almost managed to make no mistakes. To the 10th control I went a little bit to the left, but I saw the path so I know I’m too far on the left and I corrected my mistake.

Finally I finished on the 14th place and got 576 WRE points. I beat Zozo by 8 seconds :D

The second day we had a long distance race. My plan was once again to go without mistakes and as straight as possible. Once again I was slow (it was very steep and I couldn’t run :frown: ), but I made no mistakes  I finished 15th, but I beat once again Zozo  … with 2 seconds :D

I’m satisfied with the orienteering part but very angry about my running part. I was so slow... Saturday it was very warm (+20), once again I couldn’t breath…

Summer season starts

Today I will travel to Budapest. Tomorrow I will go togheter with Laura to Serbia to the Strazilovo Cup 2009. This will be my first foot-o competition of the season
Next week I will have full program with exams :frown:(

Winter season 2008-2009

I start the summary of the winter season from November. In November, December I planned some shorter-longer training camps. Unfortunately the weather was really stupid last autumn, so I had to cancel some of the camps or go to the camps and travel home after one day because of lack of snow… With all those problems I made good trainings in the end of November (some days with 50km cross country skiing).

My first competition was in Austria (13th-14th December). The Austrian Long Distance Championships and a middle distance event were held on Tauplitzalm. Both races were WRE Events. The first day wasn’t very good. The altitude (1600-1700m) made me problems. It was the first race of the year, I started a little bit too fast and got tired for the second part of the race. The second day I made a good race, finished on the 8th place.

After those competitions my problems with my left ankle started. I couldn’t ski in skating technique only double pole… All those trainings were quit good for my arms, but I lost a lot of my speed.

My New Year stared together with Laura  She visited me for 3 days

The first big competition of the year, the Ski-O Tour, started on the 9th of January. The first stage, middle distance, was quit ok. I made a good race, had only some problems finding the contact with the map. I finished 40, but the time behind the top 10 was too big :frown: The second stage, also in Austria, a long distance was also good. I finished again on the 40th place.

The next two stages were in Italy. The sprint was very bad… we had to cross a river 3 times. Twice I skied around to cross on bridges, but the fastest was to cross 3 times directly through the water. I hoped for a better place than the 39th… The next day’s long distance was a really LONG distance P: I decided to take it easy in the first part to have energy for the last part. For the second lap I had enough energy to run together with Antoine. Finally I finished 42nd.

The last SOT stages were held in Switzerland. The sprint was my best result of the Tour (33rd). The last stage, the middle distance was a chasing competition. I started fast, catched the Italian started in front of me and also other competitors. I made an incredible race! Finally I finished on the 17th place!!! BUT unfortunately, I forgot to punch a control :frown: I passed the 9th control some 30m… My whole Ski-O Tour got lost because of these 30 m :frown: If I would have punched, I would have been on the 21st place… I’m happy, because I know I can run races like that, but was really angry to make such a stupid mistake. Running 6 days for nothing…

After the SOT I run the Swiss short distance championships. There I made a good race, finishing on the 5th place. After 7 races in 9 days I was very tired. During my stay in Switzerland I lived at Viktor (a good friend of me  ). On Monday, after the SOT and Swiss Championships we went to a water park to have some fun and relax.

I drove back to Hungary, stayed one day in Sopron-Budapest, drove than to Baia Mare. I took 2 junior competitors and started the second part of the ski-o season.

On the way to Sweden we made a stop in Nove Mesto (Czech) for the Czech Sprint Championships. I started first, made the short cuts and lost a lot of time in the new snow. For me it was only training.

After 2 days of driving we arrived to Orsa Grönklitt, the venue of the JWOC and Nordic Open Championships. I won’t write many words about that week… It was terrible. I felt very tired, had to give up the long distance race… There I was team leader, driver, wax man, chef and also competitor…

From the 8th of January till the 3rd of February I drove more than 10.000 km, in 10 countries.

After some days of relaxing and training the next competitions started. First the Romanian Sprint Championships and Long distance Championships (these were also Pre-JWOC 2010 competitions). I won both races without any problems. The next weekend the Middle distance and Relay Championships were held. I won the middle and the relay together with Pepe and Mircea. 4 races 4 victories  (my only victories of this winter :frown: )

One week later I started my travel to Japan. I took the bus to Budapest, slept one night there, than I flew to London – Tokyo – Sapporo. During my travel I got a little bit cold so I felt not 100% the first days in Rusutsu. I also had problems with the 7 hours time difference between Romania and Japan. :frown: The sprint race started well, but after 2/3 of the race my lungs started to hurt (place 38). The long distance was once again a bad race. To the 2nd control I had an accident, lost my ski and lost almost 5 minutes till I could continue the competition. From there on I was alone and lost more and more time. My lungs made me also problems, so I want to forget that race (44th place). After the rest day I felt much better. Unfortunately I made a small mistake so Bernd Kohlschmidt catched me. 2/3 of the race we ran together. It was my best race of the week, but still only 37th :frown: The last day was the relay day. I was alone from Romania so I ran only the first leg. During the last night it snowed a few cm, but enough for the skies to be very-very slow. Luckily not only my skies were slow, all other first leg runners had the same problems. I finished with a very good 5 min distance from the first place on the 13th position.

I trained a lot during last autumn, but unfortunately had the problems with my ankle and my lungs (in Japan). I hoped to finish in top 25 at WOC, but unfortunately I couldn’t… so I’m not really satisfied with my winter season. I won 4 gold medals at Romanian Championships, but that was only a small goal of my season.

Next year it will be quiet hard to train and to make good results. My main goal for next year is to organize good JWOC, EYOC, World Cup and WMOC. Organizing all this will take a lot of time and energy. I hope in 2 years I will be able to run into the top 20.

Now the summer season starts

Bye

Restarting my studies :((

Today I restarted my studies after more than 3 months :frown: I’m back in Brasov, have to learn and give some exams the next weeks…

This afternoon I started preparing for the foot-o season  I ran together with Dinu. It was a very-very fast training (average speed 4:03 min/km!!). Now I feel a little bit tired, but I for my goal to qualify for World Orienteering Championships this summer I will tolerate some pain P:

Home, sweet home

Finally I have some time to write on my blog.

After a long journey I arrived home Wednesday morning. The flight was quiet ok. I had only some problems with my baggage. First in Sapporo during check in I got a sheet of paper informing me that my baggage won’t fly with the same flight like me to Tokyo Narita and will arrive a little bit later. We were too many ski orienteers, plus there were also some ski jumpers and the plane was full. The Kazakh team, Italian team got also the same information paper. When we arrived to Tokyo we got a 1000 Yen eating voucher from All Nippon Airlines, because of the late arriving of our bags  After taking some breakfast (for 1000 Yen P: ) our baggage arrived. It was sent from Sapporo to Tokyo Haneda airport and from there driven by car to Narita airport. From Narita I was travelling alone… almost alone :D Hana Hancikova had also the same flight to London, but she was sitting far away from me. After a long flight and a hard landing we arrived to London. Both Hana and me (and other passengers too) felt very bad after that landing… I had around one hour in London Heathrow Terminal 5. We talked a little bit with Hana, than later on I had to go to my gate. After two hours finally I arrived to Budapest. I thought I will have problems with my bags (because of the short time in London), but was really happy when my bag came on the baggage trail first  Then I waited and waited… everybody got his luggage, everybody left. My skis didn’t arrive to Budapest. I ask at the Lost Baggage desk, they told me my ski bag is still in London and will arrive next day. I gave them my address, they promised me to send my skis home to Romania in max 2 days… this afternoon they arrived… after 5 days… but I’m happy to have them here
Here are my pictures from Japan: www.karpattour.ro/kepek

Now I started the training for the summer season, but here we have again winter (after some spring days), last night and today it snowed :frown:(
I will write in some days a summary of the whole season. There is a lot to write

Bye

PS. The party wasn't really good... Next year it will be much better

The one man relay :P

The relay. I started first leg ) (Romania had no 2nd and 3rd leg P: ). Already during the ski testing I felt that something it’s not ok with my skies, but I hoped they will go. On the first meters of the mass start I was quiet ok, but when we left the ski stadium everybody was passing me… I had very slow skies :frown: In the first part I tried to go with the others, with Stephan from Austria, but on the second part I was much slower than he. In the end I finished on the 13th position only 5 minutes behind the first. I’m really satisfied with today’s race. I felt much better than the other days, but unfortunately I had bad skies. But not only me skies were slow, almost everybody had slow skies. Last night it snowed a few centimeters that’s why it was so hard to ski.

Now I’m preparing for this evening’s banquet and party  Tomorrow morning at 4.30 we will leave by bus to Sapporo airport. At 7.50 I have the flight to Tokyo, in the afternoon from Tokyo to London. In the evening at 21.00 I will already arrive to Budapest. Wednesday morning I'm going to arrive home.
The next post will be from home

I wish you all the best from far east!!

Japan, middle distance

It’s time to write some words about today’s middle distance world ski-o championships.
I will start my report with some information about yesterday’s weather: the whole afternoon an evening it rained!! So we knew if it won’t snow and it will freeze during the night it will be quiet dangerous today. In the morning the weather was much better than in the evening, but still terrible. It snowed and the wind was blowing very-very strong (if some of you have been last winter in Bulgaria, you remember the middle distance’s weather…). I was afraid of having problems with my breathing again, so I decided to start a little bit slower. To our 1st and 2nd control we had to ski down the downhill where we climbed up 3 times during the long distance. Almost the whole competition was more x-country skiing than orienteering. We had to follow only the tracks made by the competitors starting in front of us. The other tracks were covered by snow so we had an easy job, but I still made a 30 s mistake :frown: Because of my slow starting speed and the mistake, Bernd Kohlschmidt (he started 2 min behind me) catched me. To the next controls we took different routes ( I think every time mine was a little bit faster than his P: ) In the end we had to climb up to the finish area. It was so hard… 130 high meters climbing non-stop. Bernd was behind me but only a few meters. On the top of the hill the wind started to blow once again… The 3 last controls I took some meters in front of Bernd and after a fast finish I crossed the finish line in front of him… but he was still 2 minutes better than me… Finally I finished on the 37th place… Of course I’m not satisfied, but I did my best…

Yesterday we had a sightseeing tour in Sapporo. First we drove to the Ski Jumping Arena. There we visited the Olympic Museum  We paid a lot of money for the excursion so we thought that the organizers paid our entrance to the museum, but there was nothing paid… we had to paid 540 Yen for the entry… Later on the bus drove us down to the city center. There we had 3.5 hours of free sightseeing. I joined the Austrian (3 persons) and German (one of the 2 Germans was there) teams for the walk around the town. First we visited the old governors’ house, than the TV Tower, later on the Clock Tower and finally we had a snack and went back to the bus. It was interesting; the only problem was the weather… it rained the whole sightseeing :frown:

Now I’m still here in Rusutsu (I planned to leave this afternoon to Sapporo, but my plans changed), I’m relaxing a little bit. Later on I will go to wax my skis for tomorrow’s relay. I decided to run the relay. I hoped the organizers will give me a cheaper entry fee if I won’t run, but I had to pay the whole sum, so I decided to run. I will be the first leg (of course ) ) and there won’t be any 2nd or 3rd legs of the Romanian team.

Long distance....

The long distance is over… I don’t know what to say… yesterday I wrote that I’m totally disappointed. Is there any word stronger than “totally”? That could describe my feelings now…

First of all I hate mass start competitions. You start and you can’t go your speed, you have to go with the others, so you try to push harder and harder and you forget that you have still 25 km left till the finish… After the first control I had a big crash… my right binding opened and my ski decided to get into the valley faster than me (but not on the ski track…). I had to go down for my ski and then try to get up to the track again… now I know how it is to climb up a mountain without any help and tracks in more than 1 m snow… With this incident I lost around 5 minutes so all the competitors were already far away. On the first lap I catched one US competitor and saw the Italian guy in front of me, but he was already on the top of the final climbing (you can see it in the picture) and I was still down (around 100 m of high difference…). The second lap started with a… big uphill… once again more than 100 m up, taking one control and then skiing down 200 m!!!! On the final climbing of the second lap (once again the same climb like the first lap) I was in front of the Italian guy, I changed the map before him, but he was lucky and had the shortest forking on the last lap, so finally he finished in front of me (like 42 other competitors…).

My biggest problem during the whole race was the air… I couldn’t breathe… If I tried to push a little bit, after few seconds I felt that I suffocate... I really don’t know what the problem is… I heard from two swiss guy to have the same problem, but not so bad. I asked some others about their opinion and they said that the air humidity is very low, that’s why this happens. Why only to 3 competitors of 100???

Now I feel really pissed off… It was a bad idea to travel here to Japan. I think the financial problems the week before I travelled here were a sign to stay home… I spent a lot of money and make such races…
Tomorrow we have a rest day. We will go down to Sapporo and visit the ski jumping stadium and the sports museum. I hope it will be more interesting than these competitions…

What result should I wait for Saturday?? Not to die somewhere in the forest trying to get some oxygen??

World Championships Sprint

I’m totally disappointed... I trained for today’s competition the whole year and now I’m only on the 38th place. On the way here to Japan I got a little bit ill. I made no mistakes...Physically the first part of the race was ok, but on the second part my lungs started to hurt because of the illness...so I couldn’t give all I had on the last part. To the 4th control I catched the Italian guy starting in front of me, but after 2 controls I couldn’t ski with him...It was so bad... I’m really-really angry.

Yesterday I forgot to write about my goals for this WOC, but if I write them after this race everybody will think I’m crazy... My goal for today was a top 20 place... Now I have to change a bit my goals and I hope for one top 30 place during this week...

Once again I’m alone from Romania here. It’s so bad to have nobody here... I would be really happy to have somebody here to give me some energy for tomorrow...

Japan, day 1 (after model event)

The model event is over, so I write a few words about the terrain and the tracks. There’s a lot of snow  They say there’s almost 3m of snow. :yikes: For us it’s the same if there is 30 cm of frozen snow plus 20 cm of new snow of 3m snow plus 20 cm of new snow. We feel only the new snow. The terrain is hilly, there are some steep up hills and small river crossings where you can break your skies  The tracks are narrow and soft, so we will have a really hard week… :irked:
For those who know something about skies: I tested my skies and the 2 Fischer plus skies are gliding much better than the 2 Fischer Cold skies

Bye

Japan, day 1 (before model event)

Now I have some time to write about the accommodation and other things here.
I never lived in such a luxurious hotel like this… I really like it, my room is big (I live alone in a 2 bed room) everything is very good, the only problem is with the price: 8400 Yen (around 80 Euro/night). I would like to live in some simple hotel or hostel and pay 20-30 Euro/night, not 80… But here in Rusutsu they have nothing cheaper…

An other thing that makes me very angry is the attitude of the organizers regarding the entry fee. They are very kind, helpful but they are really unfair with the entry fee. I won’t run the relay, but have to pay the same entry like the other who run relay too. The whole entry is incredible huge: 38000 Yen, more than 330 Euro!!!! (Others have bigger problems. Some competitors run only 1 race, in teams where there are more than 4 competitors, and they also have to pay 330 Euro. 330 Euro for 1 race!!!!! Crazy, really crazy…

Here in the hotel we can choose from 4 different restaurants (Japanese, Western, “Oktober Fest” and one more). I took the “Oktober Fest” both yesterday dinner and breakfast today. It was buffet, so I could eat what I want and as many I want P: There was all kind of food from fish to pork, rice to potatoes and everything.

After dinner I went to sleep. I slept very good, woke up 4 minutes before my clock was ringing  I feel I have no problems with the time difference, but we will see how I will feel during competitions…
Now I’m going out to the model event and will try my skis. In the afternoon we have the opening ceremony later on some official meeting with invited people and in the evening from 19.00 the team leaders meeting.

Arrived in Rusutsu

I arrived well to Rusutsu  Now I'm going to take dinner and than going to sleep. I will write more tomorrow.

Tokio airport

I just arrived at Tokio-Narita Airport. After a 2 hours flight from Budapest to London, spending some hours at London Heathrow Terminal 5 (it's incredible how big that airport is) and a 12 hours flight from London to Tokio I'm now here in the japanese capital (not the city, only the airport P: ). The long flight was really good, I slept around 7 hours without waking up P:
From here I wil fly in some minutes to Sapporo, take the bus and finally arrive to Rusutsu in the afternoon (japanese time P: , now here it's 10.15  )

The travel starts

Today my big travel starts  This evening I will take the bus to Budapest. I will arrive there tomorrow morning. Then we will go together with Laura to a foot-o competition. She will run, I will be only a spectator P: I’m afraid of some accident’s that’s why I won’t run :D
Sunday morning I will fly from Budapest to London Heathrow –Terminal 5. Hopefully my bags won’t get lost there :D From London I will have a 12 hours journey to Tokyo Narita airport and finally one more 2 hours flight till Sapporo Chitoce.

The swiss boys wrote some interesting things on their blog (http://ski-o.blogspot.com/ - only if you understand German). I’m waiting for the next week
I hope I will have possibilities to write on my blog if not here you can find results: http://www.orienteering.or.jp/swoc2009/

Final countdown: 3 days left

These days I try to get used with the Japanese time. Yesterday and today I woke up at 6.30 and drove up to Harghita Bai. After last week’s problems (tired, unmotivated) now I feel very good  Last week I made one fast lap in almost 2 minutes, today my best time was 1.28 P: I’m in a good shape, hopefully my results will show also the same thing :D

Now I’m going to sleep  In Japan it’s already 1 am :frown:

We won yesterday the relay  Pepe started first leg, came in with 2 min advantage, Mircea was second leg, arriving with 10 min advantage (the second place changed during the race). After these first two legs I had absolutely no problem. I took it really easy, took care of my health any my equipment in focus of the World Championships next week. Finally we finished 14 minutes in front of the second placed CSU Craiova team. Although I took it easy I made the best time of the competition almost 5 min faster than the second placed Brabiescu Paul. Thanks to my teammates for this victory

Now the countdown for Japan starts  I will leave home already on Friday afternoon, travelling to Budapest. On Sunday morning I will fly to London from there to Tokyo and finally Sapporo.

Middle gold :)

One more gold medal  3 of 3 individual gold medals  It's the third time I managed this afert 2006 and 2007
It was a very hard competition… but not only hard it was bad too. One of the worst competition of the last 5 years  There were almost no skating tracks… and a course setter made also a big sh*t (there were parts where taking down the skies and running through the forest was faster the skiing on the tracks :chef: )
I’m happy for my victory, but I’m not happy to have ski-o competitions like this was :irked:
Now, I’m going to sleep P: I’m preparing for the World Championships in Japan, I have to get used with the Japanese time. That means sleeping from 15.oo till 1.00 … It will be hard, but I will try :ninja:

Romanian Championships summary

Now I have some time to write a summary of our National Championships.

The National Championships weekend started already on Thursday evening. Our Hungarian friends (Janko Tamas and his girlfriend, Bertoti Regina, Kiacz Bence and Orsi) arrived Thursday late evening. Laura came also together with Bence  With all this friends here, it seemed to be a good weekend
The whole night from Thursday to Friday it snowed here, so we decided to drive up to Harghita Bai on Friday afternoon. We made a short skiing, more fun than training P: Shot some pictures and came home.

Saturday morning we drove to Bucin (the competitions were moved there, because of lack of snow). We had the sprint race  My biggest opponent was Suciu Simion. He started 1 min in front of me. On the way to the second control he made a mistake, so I almost catched him. After some control I passed him and made my own race, finishing with more than 2 min advantage on the first place. This was my 6th sprint Champion title since 2003 (the 4th in a row) I was satisfied with my race. Despite the soft tracks I had a good speed and made no mistakes.

Sprint map

The others had also good races. Bence finished 8th in the ME race, Tamas won the M40 race and Laura finished the race  (it was her first ski-o competition).

In the evening Uwe made us some homemade pizza’s  We were all here and had a good evening. and wine

Sunday morning we drove up once again to Bucin for the long distance race. It was a very-very tough race: long, a lot of uphill and still soft tracks. I started good, after some controls I catched up Stupu Petru (one of my biggest opponents). He tried to come with me, but after 3-4 controls I left him behind. The whole race I catched up competitors, so I thought it would be the 1st place
When I arrived to the finish, I was almost dead… It was one of the hardest race this winter, but I’m happy for one more victory. After last year’s silver medal I managed to regain the gold medal  It was my 15th ME Champion title (12th individual P: ) Hopefully this weekend I will raise the number with 2 more gold medals P:

Long distance map

Unfortunately Laura lost her SI card during the race :frown: If somebody will found it please write me :D
The whole Monday we relaxed together with Laura  But in the afternoon she left home to Budapest…

Both races were also WRE competitions  According to some World Ranking rules (I don't know exactly the rules) I got for both victories 1000 points  After this weekend I'm on the 68th place

Yesterday afternoon I made a one hour skiing, but felt tired… Today I tried to make some fast skiing, but felt also very tired, so I had to cancel my fast training… I hope I will fell once again ok for the middle distance race and the relay on Saturday, Sunday

Bye

2 races 2 victories :)

Yes, I had a really good weekend  I won both the Sprint Championships and the Long distance Championships too. I will write the summary of the competitions tomorrow evening.

Preparing for National Championships

I'm preparing for our National Championships, but unfortunately we have no snow around my town, so I can only run :frown: I'm a little bit demotivated, but hopefully will get back in good shape for the weekend...

Exactly one year

We have exactly one year till the JWOC and EYOC (and possibly World Cup and WMOC). The countdown starts

Driving home from Sweden and first days home

First of all sorry for not writing this week. I had no time :frown:

Let’s start with last Saturday’s relay from Sweden. I made a team with the two youth competitors. Running the first leg I was satisfied. I finished in front of the Bulgarian team (Ilian Tonchev), the Latvian team (Edgars Sparans) and a Swedish Club team. That was my best race of the whole NOC week.
In the evening we had the banquet and the party  I made a short speech about next year’s JWOC  (you know I’m one of the main organizers of the Ski-O JWOC, EYOC 2010  ). After the good party we slept a few hours and Sunday morning our trip home started
Sunday I drove down till Ystad. There we took the ferry. The night on the ferry boat was terrible. The sea was full of waves. I had no problems, but the boys felt really bad… Monday morning we arrived to Poland. I planned to drive without sleeping from Poland till Romania, but I felt so tired that I decided to sleep one night in Hungary, in Sopron at Laura’s place  Tuesday morning we continued our way home. After some hundreds of km’s I arrived home at 3am Wednesday.
During the last almost 4 weeks I drove 10170 km :yikes: , travelling through 9 countries, running 12 competitions (totally 148,5 km, 10 hours 56 min).
After all this I was very tired :faint: . On Wednesday and Thursday I tried to relax.
Yesterday I had to go to Bucharest. I had to go to the National Sport Medicine Institute for some tests. I made all the tests, some 13 doctors checked me  Everything is ok, I only shall do more training for my pectoral and abdominal muscles.
After yesterday’s trip I was also tired…

Today was my first day without any program  I slept a lot, relaxed the whole day  In the evening I went out for a short run. Unfortunately there is no snow neither here in town, nor at Harghita Bai…

Next weekend’s national championship were moved from our region some 50 km to the north, because of lack of snow.

Bye

Middle distance

After yesterday’s rest day, today I felt much better. The only problem was the length of today’s middle distance (18km) and the temperature (-13°C). I started with a good speed, felt good the whole first lap. Watching the intermediate times, I think I took some bad routes, but we will see tomorrow when I get the map. I got a little bit angry when Ilian Tonchev (Bul) catched me on the second lap, but I tried to hold my speed.

Finally I finished on the 42nd position. It’s not a good place, but I’m happy that this race is also over. After the competition once again I felt a little bit bad, it was hard to drive home, but after some sleep in the afternoon, now everything is ok

Tomorrow I will make a relay with the two boys from the EYOC. I will run first leg. Hopefully the guys will finish till it get’s dark…

Bye

Long distance :((

This was my worst day of my whole ski orienteering career. I felt bad from the start on. My skies were slow and everybody passed me like a small child who learns now ski orienteering.
After one and a half lap (of 3 laps) I felt worse and worse. I had stomach ache, head ache, so I decided to give up…

During the afternoon I still felt bad, without energy… Watching the intermediate times it was a good decision to give up. After the first lap I was on the last place with a big gap to the others :frown:
All the competitions and the travel from the last 3 weeks placed a mark on my strength… I’m really tired and I’m waiting for next Tuesday, when I will arrive home

It’s the first time I give up a ski-o competition :frown: hopefully it was the last time!!!

Bye

Sprint :(

I had a bad sprint race today… Bad route choices, slow on the tracks and finally trying to cross a small water-course on a shortcut, I fell into the water.
No more comments on this day. Tomorrow we will have the long distance race. Hopefully it will be much better

Bye

Arriving to Sweden

After driving yesterday evening till Swinouwce (Poland), taking from there the ferry boat till Ystad (Sweden) and driving almost 800km trough Sweden we arrived to Orsa Grönklitt.
The JWOC and NOC will start tomorrow with the model event.
When I will have time I will write more.

Czech Sprint Championships

The competition is over. I don't know my result yet, because we leaved from the competition area after we finished. Now we took a shower and will start the next part of the trip to Sweden.

Bye

Driving to Nove Mesto

Today we drove from Baia Mare to Nove Mesto na Morave. Tomorrow we will run the Sprint Czech Championships in the morning, and later we will continue our drive to Sweden.
The last part of the drive was terrible... Such a snowfall, I have never seen during drive...

Bye

Swiss Championships and driving back to Romania

After the Ski-O Tour, on Sunday I also ran the Swiss Short distance Ski-O Championships. Those where held also in the same area the SOT was held. I was very tired, but run, because it was also a WRE Event. I felt tired the whole race and was happy when I crossed the finish line. My result wasn’t as good as I hoped… I finished 5th behind Gion Schnyder (he took his first Champion title, congratulations), Christian Hohl, Antoine Vullioud and Boris Fischer. I hope for a place on the podium, but my batteries were empty… It was a good race for the OLG Zürich  We took the 1st and 5th place in ME and 2nd in M20 (Tobias Lutz).
During my time in Switzerland I lived at Viktor in Zollikon. He is a good friend of me  Last Spring I lived also there during my studies in Zürich. On Monday we went to a water park (www.alpamare.ch – the biggest covered water park in Europe) to have some fun and to relax a little bit in the wellness part P: In the evening we went to the training of my swiss club, the OLG Zürich.
Tuesday morning I left Zürich, drove in big snowfall and rain till Sopron. After one night there, yesterday we drove (together with Laura) to Budapest. Today I came to Baia Mare. The Ski-O Tour is now finally over. I drove around 4500 km around Europe. Tomorrow we will start our trip to Sweden.
I will write when I will have possibilities.

Ski-O Tour stage 5&6

Ski-O Tour Stage 5 - Sprint

After the bad sprint in Italy I hoped for a good result in here in Switzerland. I started very well. I already knew the way to the first 3 controls, because it was a semi open area and I could watch the competitors starting in front of me. But from the 3rd till the middle part of the competition I had problems getting the contact to the map… On the last part I was already tired, but I managed to finish in a high tempo. My final result was 33rd. The place is not bad, but the time gap was big. I really don’t know where they gave me so much… The positive part of the day was the 2nd place on one intermediate time

Ski-O Tour Stage 6 - Middle distance

This was the last stage of the SOT. It was a chasing start competition. I started very well, cached the Italian guy started in front of me and saw Ilian Tonchev also few meters ahead. The map was small and full of controls. After some controls I finally catched Ilian and a Russian guy also. I was really tired, but happy when I finished  But my happiness was only for a few minutes… I read out my SI… Missing control… I haven’t seen control nr. 9 on my map… On the way to 10 I was only some 30 m from 9 but, I haven’t seen it on the map… This was the end of the Ski-O Tour. If I would have punched that control I would have finished in the final ranking of the SOT on the 21st place, the last race on the 17th place… With this big mistake I lost 1050 WRE points (it would have been my best ever score…)

Sprint

Today I finished 33rd. I'm satisfied with the place but not with my time :frown:
I will write later a summary.

Ski-O Tour Stage 3&4

Ski-O Tour Stage 3 - Sprint

This was the first sprint competition of the SOT. I hoped for a good result… To the first control I made the first mistake. I tried to make a shortcut, but the snow was too big :frown: (almost 1m snow…). From there on I had a bad race :frown: It was a really stupid competition… I don’t know why the course setters had to put one control on one side of the river, the next on the other side, than once again on the other side… As I know, the sprint means fast map reading and skiing, not route choice (where should I cross the river?). After going twice around, the next time I decided to cross the river by foot… This was not a sprint. I gave all my best but finished only on the 39th place.

IOF Ski-O Rules 2007:
“Courses for sprint shall require, in particular, a high level of concentration
throughout the course, detailed map reading and frequent decision making. Courses
for long distance shall require route choice, while courses for middle distance may
represent a mix of the requirements for sprint and long distance courses.
The courses shall be set to give the following winning times in minutes:
10-15 Sprint “ <- not almost 20 minutes, like it was in Italy…

Ski-O Tour Stage 4 – Long distance

In bulletin 4 it was written, that the course will be 30km on the shortest route. Before the start my ankle started to hurt, so I couldn’t make a good warm up :frown: I started slow, with respect for the 30km. Till the map exchange I felt good, so I decided to try to go faster. I still felt good, pushed till the l finish line. We had once again to go thought the river… This was the bad part of the race. But I’m happy that the Italian competitions are over and I’m now in Switzerland.
Hopefully the sprint tomorrow will much better than the sprint in Italy.

Ski-O Tour Stage 1&2

Ski-O Tour (SOT) Stage 1 – Middle distance
The first two controls I had trouble getting connected with the map, but from control 3 it was already ok. From 4 to 6 we had to climb a huge mountain (around 200 high meters). I decided to take a longer, but less steep way… I think it was a good choice, because I didn’t felt so tired when I arrived on the top of the hill. After some controls on the top of the mountain, we had to ski down. I started one of the first, so I had to make the shortcuts. On this downhill I made a long shortcut P: The snow was really good for cutting  From control 11 to 12 we had to climb once again up on the hill. This time I had no choice, I had to go on the steep, short way. It was incredible steep… 50m high difference on 140m long… After two controls we had to do the downhill… This was also really hard, my left ankle felt very bad on that part. After the downhill we had the last uphill part. I thought I have to give all I can, because from the last 3 controls were only downhill… After crossing the finish line I was the leader of the competition P: But not for long time, because the best runners started last, so finally 39 competitors beat me. I was satisfied with the 40th place (96 runners were on the start list), but my time result is not really good :frown: 12 minutes behind the best on a 40 minutes race is too much :frown:
Stage 2 – Long distance
The start of the second day was around 200 m higher than the finish. We had to go with a ski lift up to the start  The competition started with a steep uphill :frown: To the 2nd, 3rd and 4th control I saw the Lithuanian and Czech guy who started in front of me. But I also saw Gion Schnyder behind me. From control 5 to 6 I made a longer cut, than Gion so he passed me :frown: But to the next control he made a mistake and I was once again in front of him  From control 8 to 9 he was a few meters in front of me, but he broke his ski so I could pass him once again. After control 9 (map change), Gion changed his ski, I saw the Lithuanian and Czech guy far in front of me. To the 11th control I took once again a longer, but less steep route choice. I think this was a good decision, because at control 11 I almost cached the Lithuanian guy  From 14th to 15th I made once again a free ride downhill in the forest  Thanks to this I passed both the Lithuanian and Czech guys  Gion was far away, I couldn’t see him. To control 16 I made a small mistake :frown: We had to ski on an alpine skiing track and then turn left. I passed away the intersection, so I had to climb back some meters :frown: This small mistake was enough for the two guys to catch and pass me :frown: To the next control we had once again a steep hill to climb… I saw in front of me the Czech and Lithuanian guys and behind me Gion. It was the last uphill, so I gave all my energy and managed to catch the two in front of me. From 17 to 18 the Lithuanian guy came with me and Gion took an other route than we  Near the control I made once again a small mistake, but it was not so bad. I knew, that I will beat the Czech and Lithuanian, but I hoped to beat Gion also. I gave all my best on the last controls, finishing totally tired…My time was 87.39… After some time Gion also finished… 87.38… one second ) But an Italian guy was 3 seconds behind me P: and Boris Fischer 12 seconds… it was really big fight for the places around 40th :D I finished finally once again on the 40th place. This time I’m satisfied with my time also. For a long distance it’s good.

Both days we had superb weather. Beautiful sunshine, a little bit too cold, but it was not problem
Sunday afternoon I drove from Abtenau to Rosenheim, Germany (around 120km). I slept there and on Monday I drove to Italy, to Ossana.
About the competitions in Italy I will write later.

Bye

After two races...

The first two stages of the Ski-O Tour already passed… I made two good races, finishing both days on the 40th place. I will write a detailed summary of the races later on… now I’m too tired for that.

I’m now in Germany, tomorrow morning I will travel to Italy.
Hopefully I will have enough energy tomorrow to write a longer summary about these two races

Running in Sopron :)

After 14 hours of drive I arrived well to Sopron. Here I made together with Laura and her mother a 40 min run

Tomorrow morning I will travell to Austria. On my way to Abtenau I will stop for a short ski in Ramsau

Bye

Tomorrow I'm leaving :)

Today I managed to make a good, fast ski training  I skied around one hour, made one hard and one slow lap

This afternoon I made my bags and now I'm going to sleep, because at 3am I'm will start my trip

No training...

Today I made no training :frown:

I'm preparing for the trip to the Ski-O Tour...

Periostitis....

I have Periostitis on my left ankle :frown:

This morning I drove to Brasov to visit a sports doctor. He gave me a lot of medicine :frown: I will have to compete next week with this inflammation, but with a lot of analgetics…
Tomorrow I will take my car to the service. I have no problem with it, it’s only precautionary, because of the long trip.

Bye

Fast training

Finally I made a good training without pain

I skied with a classic boot on my left painful leg and a skating one on my right P: I looked like stupid, but I could ski skating without pain  In the morning I made 20 km.
After lunch we watched the last part of the Cross Country Ski-Tour. Oh my God… it’s horrible what they have to do…:insane: skating up an alpine skiing track. On some parts the hill had 28% Crazy….
In the afternoon I made a fast training  It was so good to ski fast after 2 weeks of slow, double pole skiing… We made 9 sprints up to a hill. Around 12 m high difference one 60 m sprint (almost like those at the Ski-Tour, but not 4 km, only 60 m :D )

I planned this training camp till Wednesday, but I had to come home this evening, because tomorrow I will travel to Brasov to meet a doctor to ask him what I should do with my ankle…

My ankle makes my crazy

Today we came up to Harghita Bai. My problems started already in the morning when I took my boots. I already felt the pain in my ankle… :irked: So I had to make today once again double pole :frown:

Tomorrow I will stay here, make two more double pole trainings and in the evening I will drive home. On Monday I will go to a doctor, let’s see what the problem with my ankle is.

Next weekend the Ski-O Tour will start in Austria. I will leave from home on Thursday…
I don’t know what results I shall wait for… in the beginning of the season I hoped for some good results, but with the training of the last month I can’t expect anything good. Now I only hope I can run without ankle pain… I still have 2 months left till my main competition of the winter, the World Championships. Hopefully I won’t have other accidents and can train well till then

First I wish you all a Happy New Year! Let your dreams get real this year!

In the morning of the 30rd of December Laura arrived here  She came here to celebrate New Year with me  In the afternoon we drove up to Harghita Bai to ski. Laura is just learning the skating technique, I was tired after the training camp, so I only accompanied her with her speed
In the evening we went to the theatre. It was really funny P:

After celebrating the New Year together, Laura left yesterday evening :frown:

Today I still relaxed, slept a lot. I fill up my batteries for the training camp starting tomorrow.
Tomorrow evening I will write about the trainings we will have tomorrow… The weather forecast sad it will be very cold :frown: Hopefully they will be wrong P:

In the afternoon we made one more training (20 km), still double pole :frown: Then we came home…
I think I will do a rest till the 3rd of January. Hopefully my ankle will get ok till than

-26 C....

I watched the sunrise this morning from the ski track P: We had to go to ski early in the morning, because from 10 am the biathletes had a competition and we had to finish out training till then. After breakfast we went directly to the track, so at 8.15 I was already skiing. Still the same double pole… I made 22 km then I had to stop because of the competition. We watched the women’s race and then we came back to our accommodation.

After lunch and some rest we did today’s second training. The same like in the morning, but only 21 km. During this training the sun went to sleep P: I saw the sunrise and the sunset from the track :D

We had beautiful sunshine the whole day, but it was really cold. In the morning we had -15 C… but down in Miercurea Ciuc it was much colder: -26 C !!! I’m really happy to be here and not down in the town P:

Tomorrow we have to go once again early in the morning, because it will be a cross country competition from 10 am. Unfortunately I have the problem with my ankle and I can’t take part :frown:
After the afternoon’s training we will drive home.

Finally we have snow and we can ski  It’s not so much, but for cross country skiing it’s enough P:
In the morning we I drove up here. I took my classic ski boots and skied only double poles… now I’m very tired :D my arms feel like they would be plumb… but with this boots I don't feel the pain in my ankle
In the morning I made 81 min, then we had to leave the ski track, because Eva Tofalvi came to do her training (!!!!!)

In the afternoon I made 77 min also double pole…

I was really lucky today  On the way from the ski track to our accommodation I saw a sign on a car, that he sells his ski-box  I have searched for a box already the whole autumn P: I called the guy, we met and
I have now a ski-box on my car P:

Tomorrow I will continue the double pole training :frown:

Damned ankle... please help me!!!

After yesterday’s Christmas, this morning I drove up to Harghita Bai. Once again I planned the fast training I already planned 2 days ago: 2 fast laps + 1 slow lap – 8 times. After 4 of 8 I had to give up :furious: My ankle hurt so strong that I couldn’t continue the fast training :irked: The rest of the training I made once again classic technique… but now I made faster and on the steep uphill I skied up also double pole

I’m really angry and disappointed… the whole December I had problems with this damned ankle… If somebody can give me some tips what I could do to stop the pain, please write me awww

From tomorrow till Monday evening I had planned a training camp, but I don’t know how I will do it with this ankle…

Today I drove up once again to Harghita Bai. I had planned to do the same training like yesterday, but to make more skiing after I finish the fast part.

I made the warm up, did the fast laps with much better time than yesterday (between 1:34 and 1:44). But after 10 laps I started to feel bad :frown: I got hungry… my blood-sugar level felt down :frown: My last two laps were already very slow (1:48 and 1:53). After I finished the fast laps I decided to come home…

I made 3 laps warm up, than I made 1 fast 1 slow lap 12 times. In the beginning I felt a little bit tired, but after a few laps it was ok  My times were around 1.42-1.45 on the fast laps. In the end I made 5 more laps and drove home.

Still no snow...

This Sunday passed away very fast… I made almost nothing the whole day…

In the afternoon I ran once again my town route. This time I was alone and I ran much faster: 38 min… I’m happy that I was faster, but I have to search some longer route, because 38 min training is very-very short :frown:

We still have no snow here in town. Tomorrow I will try to go up to Harghita Bai, hopefully there will be some snow :frown:

After those good biathlon results, an other girl from Miercurea Ciuc made a very good result, this time in alpine skiing. She finished 30th and got her first ever World Cup point  (She’s only 20 and it’s her first season in the World Cup). Congratulation Edith Miklos!

Running with dad

The Saturday started with a long sleep P: When I woke up the funny part of the day was over :frown: My parents planned for today the big Christmas clean up :frown:

In the afternoon I watched once again biathlon… Eva finished 11th

After watching the biathlon I went out to run. Together with my father  Last time we ran together it was last summer… since then I progressed a lot and he did almost nothing… That’s why he was very slow, but it was not so bad. I enjoyed it  We made the same lap, I did yesterday… almost the same… a little bit shorter. After some 70% my dad decided to come home and I ran the last part alone (a little bit faster P: ).

First time running in the city

Yes, it was the first time I ran in the city (excepting of course the sprint competitions we had in the past years). Usually I run outside of the town, but now the weather conditions weren't good to run in the field.

Let’s start in the morning P: I woke up, I planned to go to the margin of the town, where I hoped to find a little bit snow to ski, but no chance… absolutely no snow for skiing… Then I decided to go out to run. I ran in a relative high tempo, around 42 minutes. In the beginning I felt good, but later on I got tired and the cars disturbed me (I was running near a high used road :frown: ).

In the afternoon I made one more run  I started a little bit late and it was already dark, but I ran in the city  I made a 50 min run… I ran around the whole town :D Miercurea Ciuc isn’t very big P: During this evening run I felt really good  The truth is that I ran slower than in the morning P:

Eva Tofalvi 2nd!!!!

Last night I had a bad night :frown: First I couldn’t sleep and then it started to rain  I hoped that it would change from rain to snow, but it rained the whole night so the small snow we had at Harghita Bai melt all away…
After breakfast I made a 35 minutes run, but I didn’t enjoy it… it rained, it was slippery and everything was wet :insane:
At noon I drove home… the second time I have to cancel my training camp because of lack of snow :furious:
In the afternoon I watched biathlon  Eva Tofalvi made an incredible result!! After a perfect race (20 of 20 shoots  ) and good skiing she finished 2nd!!!! Incredible :yikes: The best result ever for the Romanian winter sport!! Congratulations  I think we will have an exciting biathlon season

Skiing in the dark

In the morning I drove up to Harghita Bai. Arriving here I had a bad surprise :frown: Once again almost no snow… this was only my first surprise of the day. I couldn’t go out for the morning training :frown: First, it was already too late when I arrived here, second I had some problems to resolve with my flight ticket for Japan.
The second surprise came when I searched for a place to sleep. I booked already middle of November for this week (and also for 3 days after Christmas and 5 days in January). The house is full, I have no place… Then the coach of the biathletes from Miercurea Ciuc changed some rooms, put more children I one room so finally I got a place to sleep. I live together with an other boy, but it’s not a problem. Unfortunately I can stay only till Sunday (I planned till Monday evening), because on Monday a group of tourist will come and they need all the places :frown:

In the afternoon we had to go out as late as possible, because we had to wait for the snow to freeze. So we started the training at 16.00. After one hour it was already a little bit dark, but the last few km’s were really dark  When I finished the training it was like skiing in the night :D

Ski-o weekend in Austria

Saturday morning I drove together with Kiacz Bence, Marossfy Dani and Orsi from Budapest to Tauplitzalm.
We arrived there around 10.30am. I had the honor to open the competition. I started first and made the cuttings in the big snow :frown:
As it was the first competition I hoped to make a good result, so I started fast. This was a big tactical failure :frown: The whole race was only up and down… after the first two big uphill’s I already felt very-very tired. You can see it below on the graph (my pulse felt down and I couldn’t give 100%)

After the race I felt very-very tired. The high altitude left a big mark… I finished 12th :frown:
In the evening we had very good dinner  The pension owner was very kindly.

After starting first on Saturday, on Sunday I started almost last :frown: I had to wait till minute 124… This race was a score competition. Luckily the area was not so big, so we had an idea how to make our course.

I learned after Saturday’s race and I started slower P: I could hold the speed during the whole race, but the last part was really killing… As you see on the graph, in the last 4 minutes we had a 40m hill :frown:

I finished on a good 8th place  Far away from Stanimir Belomazhev, but not so far from the others P:
After the race we made a superb downhill from Tauplitzalm down to Bad Mittendorf. Around 800 m altitude downhill on 6.5 km  I made 13 minutes P:
Sunday evening we arrived home to Budapest. I spent the Monday together with Laura. We made some shopping and visited a museum. Later on in the evening I drove home with the Open World bus.
Tomorrow I will drive to Harghita Bai. Hopefully I will have good snow conditions up there.

Now I'm travelling to Budapest. Saturday morning we will travel togehter with Hungarian Ski-O runners to Austria.
I will write more on Tuesday, when I will be back home.
Wish me good luck!

New Toko wax :) and -18°C

This morning (we had -18°C) I travelled to Brasov for 2 lessons. After the lesson I went together with Dinu to the Rossignol Romania shop and we took the Toko equipment we ordered two months ago
In the afternoon I made a good strength training, later on I travelled again home.
Tomorrow I plan to go up to Harghita Bai for a ski. In the evening I will travel to Budapest.

Winter weather

Today I drove up to Harghita Bai together with my father for a ski training. Unfortunately the tracks were not prepared :frown: There we had really winter weather  Snowfall, wind and cold weather. It wasn’t very pleasant, but I enjoyed it  I skied one hour, only classic technique.

After the training I still felt my ankle :frown: Hopefully till the weekend it will be ok. Thursday evening I will travel to Budapest, Saturday I will travel together with Hungarian ski orienteer’s to Austria, Tauplitzalm to participate at the Austrian Ski-O Championships.

Open World sponsoring :)

Unfortunately I couldn't do any training today, because my ankle was really bad :frown: I felt pain from the morning on...
I the morning I took some papers to the police to ask for a new passport. The old one was expired.

I have a good thing for today  I renewed the sponsoring contract with the OPEN WORLD Transport company  I will still have free bus tickets to Budapest and back  Next year I will travel more to Hungary, because of the WOC in Miskolc (but not only P: ), that's why we agreed for more tickets and in exchange I will put on the OPEN WORLD logo onto my personal car

Back home...

The day started very bad… I woke up with big stomach ache :frown: The training was once again bad: no snow, stomach ache, ankle ache and rain :frown: After the training I drove home, drunk a tea, took a bath and felt much better  In the afternoon my grandparents visited us, we had lunch together.

The weather is really crazy. After the last warm days and rainfall, now it’s snowing outside… Maybe tomorrow I will drive up once again to Harghita Bai, but only for one training.

Today I watched once again biathlon  After yesterdays 9th place, Eva Tofalvi finished toady on a very-very good 7th place!! Congratulations!

No snow and pain

Yesterday I drove home to Miercurea Ciuc. I had terrible traffic and was really tired in the evening…

This morning I came up to Harghita Bai. I had planned a training camp from today till Tuesday. Unfortunately I had a bad surprise arriving here… almost no snow :frown:( On the cross country track was only a little bit snow and only on a short part… around 250-300m… I skied in the morning there, but it was very boring and bad. In some places I could see the tarmac under the snow :frown:
During my lunch break I watched some winter sport on Eurosport. First cross country skiing (my friend, Remo Fischer finished 32nd) later on biathlon (Eva Tofalvi finished 9th  )

The afternoon’s training was a really suffering. No snow and not if this was enough, my left ankle started to pain… I suffered a whole hour…

Now, after this week my motivation is one a very-very low level :frown: I feel bad, I’m tired, we have no snow (whole Europe is under snow, only we have +15°C…)
Tomorrow morning I will try to make one more training here, than I will drive down home…

Today's training:

Long sleep :P

I started the day with a long sleep
In the afternoon I felt much better than yesterday, but I'm still not 100% fit. During the training it rained so we made only strength excersises. More than yesterday, but not very much.
Tomorrow I will have some lessons and in the afternoon I will drive home.

Low battery...

I’m tired, very tired… Today I drove to Brasov. I had some lessons in the afternoon and the training later on. We made a short run (around 20 minutes) and an easy shortened strength session, but with longer streching. I felt very, very tired… Hopefully tomorrow I will have more energy for the training

Today's training:

Once again 50 km :)

Today I made once again the trainings from yesterday. In the morning I skied 30km  The last 4-5 km’s were really hard, but I made it P: In the afternoon I made an “easy” 20km training. Up there the weather is still very good, warm, but I it won’t cool down a little bit I will have snow problems for the weekend. Here in Miercurea Ciuc we have dense fog, for 3 days already :frown:

After this mini-training camp I fell a bit tired, but it’s not so bad  These 2 days were a good preparation for next weekend’s “long” training camp… 4 days :D I skied 170km's already P:

Tomorrow morning I will drive to Brasov, because I have some lessons.

I still don’t have pulse data. These weekend I had my first trainings for the last 4 years without using a pulse tester.

November summary

After a hard October month, November was a little bit easier. First because I was sick for a few days :frown: , in the second place I was for 4 days in Venice.
I couldn’t finish the planned 400km roller ski, but it’s not a big thing, I’m happy for the good winter/snow conditions we have now.
Here are the statistics:

Totally 34 training units / 30.58 hours / 215.5 km :
11 running units / 5.54 hours / 48.5 km
13 strength units / 13.17 hours
4 roller ski units / 6.42 hours / 106.0 km
4 orienteering competitions / 2.01 hours / 28.8 km
1 bike unit / 1.22 hours / 12.2 km
1 cross country skiing unit / 1.30 hours / 20 km

50 km :D

Yes, I made today 50km  But let’s start first with the weekend…

Saturday Laura and me drove up to Harghita Bai. The weather down in the town was really bad (rain and ice), but up here it was a little bit better (only a few raindrops and snowflakes). It was not the best weather for the first skiing of the season :frown: As every year, my first km’s where really funny :D The skies controlled me, not me them :D Later on I felt really good  Laura tried for the first time skiing with skating technique (last winter she already skied a few times but only classic). She did very well  I was surprised how fast she learned the moves and skied  She skied 85 minutes without falling, not bad P:
I made 20 km, also without falling :D

Sunday evening Laura travelled back to Budapest… I took her to Brasov (she travelled from there) and came by train home in the evening.

This morning I came up to Harghita Bai for a mini training camp (till tomorrow evening). I planned to make 50km’s each day. My morning training was 115 minutes long, 30 km. The last few laps were hard, because it was warm and the snow was melting and wet. After lunch and some rest I made the afternoon training. The snow was much better, than in the morning, the track was a little bit icy, but very fast. I felt very-very good! I had fast speed, so the laps passed away very fast  The 20 km for the afternoon were completed after 72 minutes
Now I’m lying here in my bad in the Sport’s School Hotel in Harghita Bai. I have a 3 bad room only for me P:

Tomorrow I will make once again 50km. In the evening I will go down to Miercurea Ciuc.

Unfortunately I can’t write details aboute my pulse, because I had to send my Polar watch to service, because the belt broke. :frown: Hopefully in two weeks I will get it back

"Walk in the snow Friday"

I have no training to report today, because I made a training free day. Laura arrived in the morning  Till lunch time we made sightseeing in Brasov, later we drove up to Poiana Brasov for a short walk in the snow  We had beautiful sunny weather for our walk  In the afternoon we drove home to M-Ciuc.

Tomorrow we will go up to Harghita Bai  I’m really curios how the snow conditions are and if the ski tracks are well prepared. We will see tomorrow

Final countdown for the first ski day :)

Yesterday I planned for today to go out and run, but unfortunately it was a little bit cold outside and I decided not to run, only to make strength training. The training was once again very good  I felt really strong

Tomorrow morning Laura from Budapest will arrive here to Brasov  She will stay here for a whole weekend  Tomorrow I will show her the town and in the afternoon we will drive home to Miercurea Ciuc. We will have an interesting weekend P:

Only one day is left till I can ski for the first time this winter

The weather was totally crazy today :frown: First it rained, then it snowed and rained and snowed… the whole day it changed, but unfortunately almost the whole snow we had here in Brasov melt :frown:

This afternoon I made one more strength training  It was ok. I raised the number of repetitions and felt really good  Tomorrow I will make also a run, not only strength

I feel better and better  I’m almost ok again  But during today’s training I felt a little bit weakly. I made a longer and harder training, counting 4 series. Unfortunately the weather got warm and the snow started to melt :frown: Hopefully at Harghita Bai it’s colder P: This weekend I will go there for the first ski trainings

100 days left

My Monday, my week started with an early wake up :frown: I had lessons in the morning from 7.30 :frown: After the lessons I came home watched some X-Country skiing World Cup from Sweden, later on I slept a few hours. During the morning hours I felt really bad, because of my cold. But now I feel better and better  I hope in a few days I can continue the normal training.

After some weeks of hard training during October and November, last week I had an easier week. I hoped to continue the hard training now, this week, but my health thinks otherwise P: I have exactly 100 days left till the sprint competition in Japan  I started my training for those World Championships in May. I few training months have already passed and I feel that I’m on the right way  The snow is also already here, so nothing can stop me P: (ok, now a small cold slowed me a little bit down, but I will be fit in a few days and then continue with full speed P: )

This evening I made also a short and easy strength training together with Dinu in our gym.

Snow!!!

I woke up this morning with a good feeling  I opened my eyes, watched out of the window and saw the snow :D

I drove up to Poiana for today’s meetings. The way wasn’t easy, because the road was full of snow and a lot of drivers have no experience in driving on snow. But finally I arrived well here.
In the morning I made a presentation to all the coaches about my trainings, showing them some things about the Polar Pro Trainer 5 software. The coaches watched very interested
During this presentation it snowed a lot!!! I parked my car in front of the Hotel and after 3 hours it showed like this:

After my presentation I made a run in the snow  It really enjoyed it  It was so beautiful, everything was white and the forest was full of snow. I ran 50 minutes, but I felt really tired after it. Running in the snow isn’t so easy P: This is how I was after the run:

In the afternoon we had one more presentation hold by an athletic coach. It wasn’t as interesting as yesterday, but it was also good to learn some new things.

Now I will sleep here in Poiana Brasov, tomorrow we will have something more here. Around lunch time I will make one more run in the snow. Unfortunately I don’t have my skis here :frown: If the weather will stay like this it will be impossible the complete the 400kms of roller ski. But it’s not such a big problem  I’m really happy that the winter arrived, hopefully I will have snow till March

Coaching lessons

This morning I had a lesson at 9am. Finishing the lesson I drove up to Poiana Brasov (one of the most popular Romanian ski resort, located 12km from Brasov). The Romanian Orienteering Federation organized there an extension course for all orienteering coaches. I’m not a coach, but was also invited by my coach to assist to the presentations and learn something more

Before lunch two representatives of the Romanian Anti Doping Agency (RADA) spoke us around two hours about the problem of doping in sport. They warned us about using all kind of medicine without consulting an RADA representative. They also asked us to fill out those “Whereabouts” (a document where we have to say where we will be every day in the next 3 months). I already made this P: But, I’m the only one orienteer from Romanian who fills that out and sends it to the RADA. :frown: Hopefully from now one more sportsmen will do it  They also told us to be careful with all the things we eat and drink. For example we (in orienteering) could have a big problem… As you all know we run through the forest and drink the water (or energy drink) we find on the desks in the refreshment points. But do we exactly know what we drink there? If somebody is hostile, he can put in all those water cups some drugs which are on the forbidden list, and then we have the problem… Or if you go somewhere to a disco or a party, you open a bottle of beer, put it somewhere, go for a dance, later on you come back and drink once again from the same bottle. BUT do you know if somebody put in your bottle something? Hm… we should be careful…
After lunch I made a 50 min run together with Andreea Danila. She’s an orienteer from Baia Mare, she’s also here together with her coach. I felt very good during the run, it rained slowly (in the mountains around Poiana it snowed P: the alpine ski tracks had already a few cm’s of snow). First we run down through the forest and back up on the tarmac road. Finally we had 217m’s of high difference. I thought it was much less  After a few minutes of stretching and a short shower the afternoon’s presentation begun.

The lecturer was a sports teacher from the Sports University of Brasov. He is an athletic coach and coached a long jumper for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. He told us a lot about recreation after trainings and competitions. And also give us a lot of information about sports nutrition. This presentation was also very interesting, I learned a lot

The evening’s discussions about the next year’s ski-o season wasn’t really interesting. I’m the only one senior runner interested in competing abroad next winter. :frown: I will talk tomorrow personally with the representatives of the Federation.

Tomorrow morning I will drive up once again to Poiana Brasov. I’m curious if I will have to drive on snow P: The weather forecast said that it will snow this night  For the moment it’s only raining, but from rain to snow is only a small step

Summary of the foot-o season

Now, after my last foot orienteering competition, I think it’s good to write some lines about my summer season.

My last winter season ended middle of March with the World Cup rounds in Kazakhstan. I made a longer rest, because I was tired and I had to concentrate on my studies. After some weeks of trying to learn and understand something I saw that the university in Zürich is not for me. I decided to come home to Romania. But I still had on month left in Switzerland :D I run a lot of competitions there, in Neuchatel, in Olten, in Langen and in other towns and forests  During that month I got to like once again the foot orienteering

On the 8th of May I travelled finally home. The first weekend I had the ultra long distance Romanian Championships. I made a good run. Started slow, but could finish the race with a constant tempo. End of May I travelled together with Zozo, Suciu Simi and Bogya Tamas to Miskolc to the Euromeeting competition. I ran only the sprint race. The result is a shame :frown: It was my first sprint competition in forest. I took the map and didn’t know what to do with it… the second day I ran the open competition, a middle distance, not the Euromeeting long distance. Sunday I made ran the open relay, together with two other Romanians. This was the only competition of my season with a fatal error. I jumped over one control :frown: Things like this happen to me very rare… maybe once in a year. I was lucky that I made it for this year on such a small competition P:

In June I ran the Romanian Cup. There I made some mistakes so I was not really satisfied with that weekend. End of June we (Zozo, Meli and my brother Uwe) travelled to a European Orienteering Tour  First we ran the Hungarian middle distance Championships. In the morning was the qualifying race. I qualified (as the last runner of my heat P: ) to the B final. There I finished on the 9th place. It was ok. The next stage of our tour was the Thermenland Open in Austria and Slovenia. The prologue of the competition was held around the Therme Loipersdorf. This sprint race was one of my best runs of the whole season. I made almost no mistakes and was relative fast  Here I finished 12th and got 857 WRE points. The next day the first run of the Thermenland Open was in Slovenia also around a resort. Here I made also a good sprint race (better than the day before P: ). 9th with 915 WRE points (my best points of this year). The last two days of the Thermenland were very long for me…

After the competitions in Slovenia we travelled to Tata, Hungary for the Hungaria Cup. As I’m a short distance runner, I decided to run the M21 B Short. I had no luck during that week… I finished 4th 3 of the 5 days… the 4th day I made two big mistakes and finished only on the 40th place :frown: For the last chasing start race I started from the 6th place. I had an interesting race with an Ukrainian runner fighting for the 4th place. He punched the last control before me, but I managed to catch him and pass him :D I finished overall on the 4th place. It was the week of the 4th places :D During that week we also took part at an Mobile-O competition and I ran a Mikrosprint race  I was once again lucky to qualify from the last place to the Mikrosprint final P: There I finished 15th The whole Hungarian Cup was a superb week  I really enjoyed it being there.

In July I ran a few small competitions, but made a lot long trainings. The August started with Mentor Silva Cup in Predeal. The courses were very hard, the map was not easy, but I ran good, without mistakes only a little bit too slow. Later in August we had the Transylvanian Open. After a good first middle distance, I had to give up on the second day, because I had problems with my left ankle. The last day I refused to start, because of my ankle.

During the first week of September we had our National Championships in Baia Mare. Those competitions were organized together with the Balcanic Championships. I couldn’t qualify for the BOC, but it wasn’t a big problem. The first race was the Sprint. Once again I made a good sprint run. After the 5th place last year, now I finished 4th P: The second day, the long distance wasn’t important for me. I ran comfortable, without stress. Finally I had also a good result, 5th place. The last day was the middle distance. It was a very-very fast race. I made a good race and hoped for a medal, but it was once again only the 5th place, but a few seconds from the bronze medal.

After the competition (it was Friday) we drove to Hungary, Szolnok for the Sprint Hungarian Championships. The qualification was on Saturday morning. The temperature in the morning was already very high… I made the best run of my whole season. Once again I was lucky ( already the 3rd time this summer P: ) and qualified from the last place (equal with another runner) to the big, A Final. This was my goal  So the final was the extra  For the afternoon the mercury in the thermometers climbed up to +34°C!! The hot and all the competitions during the last week made me to be totally burned out… I was physically and psychically tired, couldn’t run and made a small mistake. I was on the 19th place, not bad for the first year in Elite class. I’m happy that I managed to qualify for the A Final

After those competitions I made one week rest. After the rest week I started the training for the winter. The autumn foot-o competitions were only complementary to the winter training.

Middle of October the last part of the Romanian Championships was held (relay, team and night). I made a good race in the relay (the best time of our team) and we won, together with Zozo and Pepe the bronze medal (my first foot-o Elite medal). I skipped the night competition (I hate running in the night). The two days of the team championships were not my best runs :frown: I had a good speed, but made mistakes on both days in the last part of the competition :frown: We (Pepe and me) finished finally on the 5th place.
Now, in November I ran the PWT qualification in Italy. I was a little bit stressed so I made mistakes in the beginning and later on I lost time because of the bad shoes (I had Tarmac shoes and the terrain was better for normal orienteering shoes). The other competitions in Venice were good. The sprint competition in Venice Saturday afternoon was once again good  I was in the lead long time, but lost time in the end. I had a good starting speed, but couldn’t hold it as high as I hoped. The big race on Sunday was really interesting  I could follow the map without problems, but unfortunately I couldn’t keep the speed during the whole race. 4 races in 3 days where a little bit too much P:

Now, the summer season is over. I’m satisfied with this foot-o season. I enjoy once again running in the summer (few years ago I really hated the foot-o competitions), made many trainings and progressed a lot. I feel that my speed is getting better and better, hopefully I can keep the mental part, the orienteering also on the same high level. With one relay bronze medal, one 4th, two 5th, two 6th places at Romanian Championships, an A final in Hungary and 3047 WRE points I finished a good summer season.
Next year I want to focus more on sprint competitions. I want to qualify for the World Championships for the sprint race. I have to train more on athletic grounds, to increase my speed and to hold a high speed during a whole sprint race P:

The summer season will start for me somewhere in the end of March, till that I will totally focus on the winter season

The winter season will start, hopefully, on the 13th-14th of December with the Austrian Ski-O Championships. Later, in January I will run the Ski-O Tour, later on the Nordic Ski-O Championships and the big event will be in the beginning of March, the Ski-O World Championships in Japan.

I hope the winter season will be very good  I never made such a good preparation during the summer, autumn like this year. Hopefully the results will give me a good feedback

Bye

Continuing usual training

After the Venice competitions I had to make 2 day’s rest, because I was very tired from the trip. Yesterday I went to the club training. There I met Dinu, Pepe and Anca. Nobody went out to run, Dinu had leg ache. I also decided not to run… the last weeks running on tarmac and the weekend’s competitions left his mark on my left knee. We made yesterday only strength exercises and stretching.

At long last, today I had time to sleep longer and rest up. In the afternoon I had a lesson and later on in the evening I went to the training. Today I was alone, because Dinu had no time. It was not so bad alone  I made a high intensity training: 45 s exercise 15 s of rest. All these 40 minutes long. It was really hard, but I enjoyed it  In the end I made once again stretching and I came home

The one and only Venice

Day 1. Thursday

I arrived on Thursday morning at 4am to Budapest. Bence took me from the bus terminal, we drove home to him and slept some hours. At 13 o’clock we took Laura and get off to our trip to Venice. From Nagykanizsa (in the south part of Hungary, near the border to Slovenia) we picked up Orsi, the girl friend of Bence. We drove well until the Slovenian-Italian border where the rain started. What a rain…Bence had really big problems to see something on the highway… But finally at 9pm we arrived to Venice-Mestre. The Navigation System in Bence’s car (I was it P: ) worked well so we arrived to the hotel. The room was ok. After taking shower and eating something we got into the bad… It still rained…

Day 2. Friday

We woke up early, went down for breakfast. Hm… my idea of breakfast is totally different than that of the Italians. We had only cookies, coffee and some orange juice… no ham, no cheese, no muesli…
After breakfast we took our luggage and drove around 100km to the west, to Alonte. On the way the sun came out and from that moment we had sunshine all the weekend

The PWT (Park World Tour) qualification was held. I was a very disappointed… I thought the PWT is only in parks, towns, not in forests and wine yards. Before the start I was a little bit nervous :frown: I think that’s why I made not the best route choice to the 1st control and made a small mistake (I haven’t seen the road going to the right :frown: ) to the 2nd control. From there I had no problems with orienteering only with my shoes. After the rain the days before the competition, the forest was very slippery. I had big problems getting up the hill (we had to climb the same hill on the same place twice :frown: ) with my tarmac running shoes…After losing a lot of time and energy on the forest part , I burned out for the last controls… Finally I finished 39th. I had no goal for that competition, because I knew that it was impossible for me to qualify to the Final, but I hoped to have some better result and a better run than this… maybe next year P:

The others had good competitions  Bence finished 3rd in M35 class and Laura won the Open class P:
On the way back to Venice we made a sightseeing stop in Padua. We visited the Basilica of Saint Anthony and other beautiful places in that town. I think it would have been a better idea to make the PWT in Padua than in Alonte… it would have been much more interesting.

From Padua we drove to the Venice airport, left the car in the airport parking space (it’s much cheaper there, than in Venice) and drove into the town by bus. From the Piazalle Romale we had to go by foot, with all our bags to our accommodation. Here we had also a beautiful room, only a little bit to warm P: We lived only 3 minutes far away from the Rialto bridge  After taking some dinner Laura and me made a walk to the Rialto bridge and to the St. Mark’s Square. It was so beautiful walking in the night in Venice

Day 3. Saturday

Bence and Orsi planned to make only sightseeing on Saturday. I planned to run the open competition of the PWT final. Laura came with me  We had to wake up early in the morning and walked to the Romale Square, where Janko Tamas took us with his car and drove us to Lonigo the competitions place. Once again it was interesting to see Venice in the morning, without tourists

The competition in Lonigo was better than the day before, but we had also a part with wine yards :frown: Once again I lost time there (I had no shoes with needles :frown: ). In the middle part I made a small route choice mistake… I don’t know my result, because we had to drive back to Venice after I finished the competition… and I still haven’t found the results on the internet. If somebody found them (not the PWT final results, the results of the Open competition) please send me the link…

At 13 o’clock we arrived back to Venice. Tamas and his girlfriend took the “Venice bus” (the ship P: ), Laura and me walked to the Arsenale sports hall. Laura decide also to run the Park-O competition  We had some time left to relax a little bit. We made the warm up together, because she started one minute in front of me. I started very good  My legs felt good and I found the contact to the map already from the first meters (it was my first competition in Venice). On control 4 I already catched the other Romanian guy started one min in front of me. He could run only one control with me… I ran very good, but later on I felt that I’m getting slower and slower… I got tired, made a 10s map reading mistake. Finally I finished on the 6th place  12s behind the 2nd, 7 behind the 3rd , 2 behind the 4th and 1s behind the 5th. On the last control the 2nd,3rd and 4th placed had the same time, the 5th placed 1s before them and I was 3s behind. With a better finish (it was a very long finish, more than one minute) maybe I would have been on the podium. Watching the split times I can be really satisfied with the result  I was in the lead almost half of the race and lost on the last part. The race was longer than a normal sprint (4.4km). At around 3km (like a normal sprint) I was still 2nd  This gives me a lot of self confidence for the next year

Laura took a very good decision to run the competition, she won the short class  Two races, two wins  Not bad P: She won a bottle of wine and some cookies.
After the competition we walked back to our accommodation (we tried to walk without using a map, but after some time we decided that’s better to take a map, because with this speed we won’t arrive home ) ). There we met Bence and Orsi and went out to eat a pizza. I had my first really Italian pizza :D
After the pizza we four walked to the Rialto to make some pictures. I walked together with Laura to the Frari Church and to some other places

Day 4. Sunday

Once again we woke up early in the morning  We went to the morning mess in the Saint Mark’s Basilica. It was very touching… sitting in the almost 1000 years old church and listening to the Italian mess
After the mess we took breakfast (almost the same things like the first day). Bence left earlier, because he started in the first minutes. I had a starting time in the middle and Laura in the end. After relaxing some minutes I took my running clothes. I took an old map of Venice and made my warm up running from our accommodation to the start area, trying to get in contact with the map.

The competition

So many competitors… such a big start…wow… I was impressed already from the start. But I had to concentrate on the competition. I started in the ME
I took the map and run away… It was so good  I enjoyed the race  The first part was not so hard in orienteering, we had to run as fast as possible. The “problem” with the tourists started when I arrived in the area of the railway station. There I took a longer route :frown: Later on the harder part started… more tourists and more narrow paths, bridges and squares. I felt very-very good in orienteering  Every time I arrived to a control I already had planned before the route to the next point  (yes, I know that this is the usually way of orienteering on a high level, but for me it was the first time I could make it during a whole competition). To control 7 I made a 5s mistake. I counted badly, took the corner to the left but saw that there is no bridge ) After two steps I turned around and took the next road where the bridge really was ) After the half of the race, I started to feel tired. I felt in my legs the 4 competitions in 3 day and the sightseeing in Padua and Venice. I got slower and slower, but I could hold on my concentration  After 25 controls I had to run only to the last control. I knew the way, running out to the sea, running up and down 3 bridges and there’s the finish line. After 69min and 21s I finished my first Venice orienteering competition  My goal was to finish in the top 50. Unfortunately I missed this goal with a few seconds. I finished on the 55th place. It’s not so bad for the first time  Next year I hope I will hold my fast starting speed for a longer time. I’m very satisfied with the orienteering, map reading part  The truth is, that this kind of competition is similar to ski orienteering. For me the route choice and map reading was not so hard  And for Oystein Kvaal Osterbo it was also a good race. He won P: He’s also a top ski orienteerer

The others made also good competitions. Laura finished 6th in W20 and Bence 10th in M35. For Laura it was also the first time she took part in Venice, but she also enjoyed the whole weekend exactly like me
After my race I waited for Laura to arrive, after that we made our cool down by running back to the accommodation. After taking shower, we took our bags and walked to the bus station, from there we took the bus to the airport. After 7 hours driving we arrived finally to Budapest.

I slept one more night at Bence’s home. On Monday I made a few hours walk with Laura in Budapest and finally I took the bus in the evening back home.

This was the story of a superb weekend in Venice. Running between all those tourist, on those narrow roads, over bridges (I ran over 67 bridges P: ), it’s amazing… Everybody who practices orienteering has to take part once in his life at the competition there!

I will be there next year!

Maps and picuters will be added tomorrow.

Back from Venice

Today I arrived home from the Venice trip

I’m still very tired, my left knee hurts a little bit, so I have to relax and sleep.
Tomorrow I will put on the maps (hopefully with my routes) and a longer summary of the weekend…

Bye

On the way...

I'm sitting now in the bus on the way to Budapest. We are somewhere between Targu Mures and Cluj Napoca...

Today I can say mission not completed :frown: As I wrote yesterday, I planned to make a 30km roller ski training, but in the morning I felt tired, I slept nad. I dreamed that the police tryed to catch me and I had to run away... I had headache till I arrived up to Harghita Bai, so I decided to make only 20km... The second mission was completed P:
After the training I had to make my bags and go to the bus station. Now I'm here...
Tomorrow afternoon we will travel from Budapest to Venice :D

Final countdown

I woke up in early in the morning (at 8 :D ), because I had to meet some group-mates to work on that project from yesterday. Once again it was cold in the morning…I don’t know exactly how cold it was in Brasov, but I know, that in Miercurea Ciuc it was -11°C :yikes:

I decided already yesterday not to run today, only to make strength training, but I felt very-very bad, tires during that training :frown: Finally I survived  From the training I went directly to the train station and traveled back home.

Tomorrow morning I will go to Harghita Bai to make one more 30km roller ski  In the afternoon I will travel to Budapest.

Only a few days are left till Venice

The day started with an early wake up :frown: This morning we had -9°C!! :faint: Luckily the train station is only 5 walking minutes away from home  Yes, I travelled to Brasov by train… I slept during the whole travel :D
I’m working on a project together with other group-mates, that’s why I had today a very long and heavy day. Homer: Doh!
In the evening I went to the training, but made only strength exercises, without running. I feel tired and have to rest a little bit. Mostly my legs have to relax, because on Friday I will run the PWT (Park World Tour) qualifying in Italy, near Vicenza  . Wednesday evening I will travel to Budapest. From there, on Thursday I will travel together with Kiacz Bence, his girlfriend (Orsi) and Fenyvesi Laura to Venice. There I will run 4 competitions in 3 days :D
Friday: PWT qualification
Saturday morning: open competition or (I hope, but I think it won’t be possible) PWT Final
afternoon: Park competition in Venice
Sunday: big competition in Venice  (I start ME  , this is the longest distance P: I have the best possibility to learn the map, the “terrain” for the competitions in the future  )

Mission complete

Yes, I completed the planned 30km  Once again the weather was beautiful (I think every time I go to Harghita the sun comes out P: or maybe I go only than when the sun is shining :D ) The local biathlon team (mostly children and juniors) was also there. The track was full of “life”. I really enjoyed it, because it wasn’t as boring as usually, when I’m alone there

Now I have to go to sleep, because tomorrow I will travel to Brasov by train at 6.58… that means once again wake up early in the morning :frown:

30 km :) But I have 242 km's left :P

After arriving home yesterday night at 2 o’clock, I slept today a little bit longer then usually
In the afternoon I went to Harghita Bai for the roller ski training I planned. I was once again lucky, because I had very good weather (sunshine), but colder then the last time I was there. I made all the 30 km’s I had planned  I felt very good during the whole training. After 10 km I started to push a little bit on the uphill, that’s why my arms are now tired… but it’s not so bad P:

Tomorrow I have planned the same like today  Is still have some km’s left till the 400 km’s mark P:
