The Darkness Within

Don't you hate the evenings? You know the time when all the nasty thoughts creep into your head and the darkness creeps ever closer. A time where you lay in bed awake tormented by these thoughts until at some point you can't recall when you fell asleep. Sometimes you wake up again but don't remember doing it and the thoughts, yes the thoughts... the thoughts return. Sometimes the thoughts, they creep into your dreams. The night is an awful dark time isn't it? Your only hope of escape comes 7 to 10 hours later.

My Opera Trubo Xp

In basics this is just a copy of my entry in the "Submit your own experience" contest cleaned up.

When I first installed the Opera 10 alpha I was amazed at the speed at which is loaded pages. Opera 9 is fast but 10 made it seem even faster!!!!!!!

Then I found that there was a "opera turbo" feature so I tried it. BANG never going back! My connection crashes every evening (probably due to overload) and can be slower than slow dial-up (I am using a satellite link). With Opera Turbo I can still browse even under these adverse conditions!!!!! I now run Opera 10 on my living room computer just so I can use Turbo.

The only complaint I have is that some websites such as Facebook and Tribal Wars don't work properly. I understand why and don't think it can be fixed. It would be nice if you could add a filter so that it automatically didn't use turbo for certain sites. Beyond that I love it. I am using it right now, tonight is the worse its been in awhile. It is claiming only x3 compression and the images look great!

Keep up the good work Opera ASA!

MEDIA:
When I found out about the contest I was looking for handheld radios. The Yaesu FT-60R looks like a great rig... alas I don't have $245 to spare right now .

I also created a presentation in OpenOffice. I would have uploaded as a video but I can't, and the export as swf option dosn't include auto timing and sounds.

Note: Once you play on the first slide just leave it and it will play with the timings I intended.

Cellular Phone Operators Licence

With increasing conern over the adverse effects of mass cellular telephone usage thoughout society (including car crashes, pedestrian deaths, txting in class, and txting at work), many solutions have been proposed. These include cell phone bans (instituted in many north american high schools), restrictions on use while driving, and even setting up jamming equipment (one of the more controversial subjects).

On all proposed solutions there are those who are strongly opposed and those who strongly support. On my proposal I expect no different (assuming of coarse that anyone seriously considers this). One of the biggest problems with most solutions is that legislators and anti-cellular advocates fail to diferentiate cell phones from other forms of wireless communications, specifically ham radio and comercial fleet communications. This has lead to several Ham groups having to advocate for rewriting for excemptions.

Two-way radio, such as CB, Ham Radio, and Comerical Two-Way, is safer to use while conducting other tasks than cellular phones. It is true however, that using a two-way radio will decrease concentration while on the road, just as talking to passangers, changing a radio station, or eating will. There is a key reason why it is safer than cellular phones however, full-duplex vs. half duplex. In a two-way radio you only have half duplex, you can either receive or transmit, you cannot do both. Cellular Phones however, are full-duplex. You are receiving the conversation from the other participant and transmitting to the base station (which ultimatly routes the call to the other participant). This key difference creats a vast difference in how the user concentrates on a call. It is easier to pay attention to other tasks while operating a two-way radio, then a cellular phone.

Recent studies have shown however, that walking with a cell phone is enough to increase the risk of serious injuring from an accident.

As for banning of phones is specific instituions (such as schools), I am personally opposed to them. However, there are many good arguments in favour of it. I am not going to go into much details on this subject as a result.

With all this there is still one other factor that differentiats HAM, and Commerical radio from cell phones, the Operators Licence. Now the Canadian Basic Amatuer Radio Operators Licence does not test for the ability to drive while using a rado. I have never looked into a commercial licence so I cannot say what is on it but I assume it is similar. This test does however, have an impact on screening out users who may otherwise be irresponsible while using their radio. This can be more emphasised by the state of amatuer radio in the U.S., where requirements to get a licence have been reduced.

I figure a cellular operators licence could help with some of these problems. Even if it is only a written test. It will help with texting in school. Only teens who are willing to study for their licence will be able to legally operate one. From personal expeirience and what I have heard the problem areas are students that normally do not care about school anyway. Students who do, also text, but are also paying attention and working (the two things that teachers and school administrators are most concerned about). Perhaps there could be a serparate class for driving, where an operator must succsessfully complete a driving coarse while using handsfree. As a result you would get something like "Cellular Telephony Operators Licence" with "Basic" and "Mobile" qualifications. There should be no age restrictions for such a licence, just as there are no age restrictions for a Ham Licence (though for mobile you would need a valid vehicle operators licence). This means that all current users could get a licence, but at the same time how many 8 year olds are going to be able to complete the test.
