A mad scientist is someone who argues with the laws of the universe and spends a lifetime "proving" them wrong through experimental data or mathematical equations, a mad engineer is someone who builds Crazy Robots, Killer Gorillas, and Doomsday Devices. Hollywood has gotten this wrong, and its a shame, for decades mad students went into science when it was really engineering that they wanted. The issue lies in a misunderstanding of science vs. engineering. A scientist looks at the mysteries of the universe and seeks merely to understand them. An engineer on the other hand takes that "understanding" and attempts to find ways to exploit them. Whether the properties of the universe are exploited for good or ad is left uncertain but regardless this is the case. How many "mad scientists" do you see collecting raw data, or working complex theoretical equations? The classic "mad scientist" is depicted as building strand chemicals, or killer robots, or breeding monsters. These are the workings of a engineer, and NOT a scientist! Respect your mad engineer, the mad scientist will not dare break a fundamental law of the universe, but a mad engineer may very well succeed. The mad engineer knows no bounds. The mad engineer knows where you live... he built a tracking system and programmed it to find you! The mad engineer has legions of killer gorilla robots, fuelled by tacos! Watch our, hide your tacos, and stop calling him a scientist and perhaps he may spare you!
