The elementary school where I am privileged to teach music is blessed to have a progressive principal who is willing to try new things to enrich the educational opportunities of our students. A program that we've implemented this year is "flex time." In the last 20 minutes of lesson time during each day, Tuesday through Friday, various enrichment classes are offered--everything from soccer to reading tutoring to work completion and study hall to various other classes as determined by the teachers. For the months of February and March, I have been teaching a knitting class for students to attend, two weeks at a time, to learn the basic rudiments of knitting. (That's pretty tough to accomplish in only 20 minutes per day, I've learned!)
I had a wonderful phone call from a parent last week. The mother called and thanked me profusely for changing her daughter's life. I was quite surprised by her declaration. She explained that her daughter was very, very shy and never participated in family talent shows. In fact, her daughter claimed that she didn't have any talent and couldn't do anything well at all. Yet, this little girl, about 9 years old, had worked really hard in her two-week period in this class and had learned to knit. Not only had she learned, but she reveled in her knitting! She had displayed her completed knitting project for her family talent show and was preparing to display her knitting in a talent show for her entire church congregation! This sweet mother almost cried as she thanked me for opening up to her daughter a skill in which she could take great pleasure and even pride.
Needless to say, that phone call highlighted my entire day.
Have any of you ever had such an experience? Share with us your stories of knitting and how this ancient craft has enriched your lives or the lives of others with whom you've shared your skill. We'd love to hear!

Hi all,
Has everyone tried this? I need to get longer circulars to try it, but I think it would be fun.

If you go to
http://widgets.opera.com/widgetize/startand make a widget to this blog, it works great!
you just select "My Opera" blog type and then put in <Knittersknook.com> (no brackets) in the next spot, and go. I chose the skin with the hearts because I'm already using the one with the flowers. I LOVE this! Easy way to check the messages on here.

So I know about a year ago

I said I'd post the FO of the Fake Isle hat I was working on--here it is, a day late and a dollar- fifty shorter:

It's all hand spun, too

It's off my Ravelry page--I'm sleekitbeastie there, if you're looking. And if you haven't checked it out yet,
Ravelry is the place to be!

I just finished a new book--well, it's new for me, anyway. It's called "Mason-Dixon Knitting," by Kay Gardiner and Ann Shayne. Love these ladies' senses of humor!
Anyway, they share a technique for knitting "Log-Cabin Blankets." Now, the log cabin patchwork style is my favorite type of quilt. I just finished one for my daughter, Marissa, for Christmas. It only took me FIFTEEN YEARS to finish the thing!
I tried to place a photograph of the quilt here, but the Opera website wouldn't resize it to fit, so it was HUGE!
So I found this book with a wonderful idea for knitting a log cabin blanket, using the patchwork log cabin block pattern.
Here's a picture of one of their squares in progress, taken from their website http://www.masondixonknitting.com
Imagine being able to KNIT a favorite quilt! Yee haw! I can't wait to convince Hubby Dear how important it is to buy a whole stash of cotton yarn, and then start knitting!

I've been knitting away on some projects for my kids. It's a little warm for sweaters right now but I'll be ready in October. More pictures on my blog.
