one day, I'll blog (here).

Chaetophobia

, , ,

I was reminded of a phobia that I have had for as long as I remember. I meant to look the word up and Amy found it: Chaetophobia, the fear of hair. I don't know how to pronounce it, but I can certainly describe my own version of the phobia.

When I was a kid and my mum was bathing me, I was terrified of floating hair in the water. So I already had long hair at the time. I remember curling up as far as I could from these long, threatening, floating and offensive threats. My word was "thread", as in "there is a thread". My mother had to remove the floating "thread(s)" from the water.

Now I don't curl up so much, but I'm still really bugged by the occasional strand(s) of detached hair. A lot.

I don't mind attached hair at all. How funny to make the distinction.

Being scared of hair seems like being scared of bugs and things. I am generally not scared of bugs and spiders, but I really don't like it when I feel them sort of clinging to me - and the same goes for floating hair. Especially when it is wet, it just won't go away.

How that develops into a phobia is as much a mystery as other phobias. I have a mild phobia of being under bridges - although it has mostly gone away now, I still have moments where I look up and feel a shiver.

I absolutely hate hair in drains, like in a clump in the tub. But I think it is more a fear of drains than hair...

hi im kati. i hate detached hair. i think its the most disgusting thing. it all started when i was in 1st grade and this girl told me to suck on my hair so you can taste the shampoo. well i did and ya i tasted it but then i heard this weird like squeeky noise and then i got this weird tingaly feeling in my gums. and then now like if i hear the noise or if i see hiar like on someones clothes or anywhere other than a head it creeps me out. espesially when its wet...... thx 4 reading..... lol and now im 13 and it still creeps me just as much as it did in 1st grade.

WOW! I had no idea there was actually a phobia of this. I would always say I was not scared of hair so it cannot be a phobia, but I only find it gross.
Does this mean I fear it?

I just think it's nasty to feel it on your body when you shower, to see it ANYWHERE in the Kitchen, Fridge, Sink or near your mouth or body. I's just so nasty and disgusting that a loose dry strand alone is bothersome to me even when its on the ground, imagine the long wet ones?.. ugh!

Does this mean I have this phobia too?.. Gosh.. I have to learn how to pronounce it.

I thought I was the only one.

When I was young, I would have mom wash my hair, comb it out, put on the ointment and then I would set it in rollers. Now as I moved from NY to FL after marriage I cannot afford to pay a stylist to wash and blow for me, so I completely chopped off my long beautiful hair. I tried desperately to find someone here affordable, but it just was not working with anyone. They overcharged for an aweful price..... so I cut it way short and still had hair coming off of me, and onto my shirt.

Now I have found the perfect stylist and have let it grow, but I still don't wash it on my own. I know this lady in church that washes my hair for me at her house and blows it out for me every 2 weeks. After 3 weeks (like this past weekend) I get desperate and go to the stylist, which I did (I needed to dye my roots and get a trim anyway)... but BOY, do I hate hair!

I can bare it when it's at the beauty salon, but if I see it in places where it SHOULD NOT BE, like in someone's scrapbook behind a photo, or in my lip gloss, I just get upset and grossed out.

Do I have a phobia?
