Days with Family

Saturday night with Mom & Dad

Dad came down to watch Lawrence Welk tonight. This morning took alot out of him, and he spent most of the day laying down. But tonight he is enjoying the music.

He's reminiscing a bit tonight, I'll try to share that: Dad was talking about feeding corn shocks to the cattle, and how he had to bring the shocks up to where the cattle were.

He's been reminding us about the gas brooder heater he used to keep the baby pigs warm in the winter. I remember that unit, but never thought about it being used originally for chickens. He put fans in the farrowing buildings to keep them cool in the summer. This was long before we had air conditioning or ceiling fans in the house. Guess the pigs did better than the family!

One year he fed semi-solid buttermilk to the pigs, as a protein. I don't remember this at all, maybe Bev does....they said the animals loved it. He also said they had some ground that didn't produce well, so he tried planting sorghum, and mom ground it up. His mom made muffins out of it. He found out there was no market for it, so he didn't grow it again.

Dad thinks he is the only one in the neighborhood who used a "hay-buck", using a hydraulic to lift the shocks. He said he put extra teeth in it and a rope to keep everything together. He used the rope to tie up the shocks.

He thinks about those who worked inthe factories, and realizes that he had the chance to experiment and do things a little different than everyone else. He feel good about using his creativity to solve problems.

Dad talks about the farmers being able to be around their kids, when other professions don't allow that. Dad says "he didn't get rich, but he doesn't think money is everything. At least he raised 4 kids that didn't grow up on cigarettes and booze."
