Open Source software is a very important part of the software community. For the most part open source software insures integrity in the software that you use. A very good example of open source software, developed and maintained by Sun Microsystems is OpenOffice.org. It is a very powerful and FREE alternative to Microsoft Office. It is compatible with all existing and past Microsoft formats for its office suite. I would highly suggest trying it out. It also supports the open format ODF, the Open Document Format. This format is critical to the future of office applications because it offers complete interoperability between other applications, the only challenge is getting Microsoft to acknowledge this.
