"I will NOT check the tour dates now to find out if there really is no other festival I might be able to squeeze in somehow"

, , ,

That's what I wrote here.

Of course, I DID check the tour dates. And now I am seriously considering going to Mo i Rana in September.

Yes. Mo i Rana... http://tinyurl.com/moirana

:insane:

This is my head exloding...

, , , ...

Prolog: OK, it's no news that I am a weird kind of fan. Somehow, I always want to be around "my" bands - well, that of course is not the weird part. But generally, I'm very reluctant to talk to them, unless I've really got something to talk about. Otherwise, it's just awkward. So basically, seeing them around is great, going by and saying hi would be great (if I knew I could leave again right away and would thus dare), really getting into a conversation would be fantastic (and utopic, given my small talk skills ), starting to talk to them and not having anything to talk about is a desaster.

So, back to Månefestivalen. The Saturday started out very nice. I went by the literature scene, understood pretty much, actually, and it was quite fun. But: It was raining, so my mood was way down, of course. awww

I had planned to go over to Fredrikstad to find something to eat there (the choice of food on the festival ground was pretty limited), but after strolling around a bit and walking over to the supermarket and back to the hotel, it was already quite late, and I wasn't too fond of getting on the ferry, running around desparately looking for Kebap places and jumping right back onto the ferry to go back. Plus - there might be some rockstars walking around that you might or might not want to talk to, you know...? :D

So I spent some more time around the festival (it wasn't even raining anymore), discovering a great impro theater group (that I saw a few more times that weekend, they were really funny!). Then at some point in time, I settled in front of the main stage, with my book and a drink, waiting for the band before Skambankt to finish. And of course always being on the lookout for rockstars. *g*

The Skambankt concert was great (check out the report on http://skambankt.konzertjunkie.de, if you like). And this time without tunnel vision. :D And then it was weird fan girl time! Because by then, Kaizers were "in the house" and walking around, of course. Or well, mostly running around, so there was no way to walk by anyway. Good. *gg* Except for one exception - so I spent the next half hour deciding whether I wanted to go by and say hi or not... You don't want to know how often you can change your mind in half an hour... In the end, I did NOT say hi, but mostly because I was too late and didn't want to ruin the groupie hunt... *cough* Some people COULD do that a bit less obviously, I think. Uhem...

Anyway. Then it was time for Tommy Tokyo, which I enjoyed pretty much. And after that, I bumped into the Skambankt guys and got my questions... well, not really answered, but I could ask them at least. So that was quite nice.

Then a fantastic Kaizers show (http://kaizers.konzertjunkie.de, if you want to know more), and as I didn't spot the people I met throughout the day after the concert, I went home right away. That's something I've learned by now - don't hang around after concerts hoping and waiting for things that are not going to happen. And it IS never going to happen that after a concert, the band comes out, points at you and says "we want to talk to you!" :D
(And if it WOULD happen, it would probably mean something bad, right? )

So, all in all a great day. I'm used to the fact that at festivals with "my" bands, I'm more busy watching out for the band members than enjoying other concerts. It's stupid, but that's the way I am... and well, this time it was two great concerts, so no reason to complain.

OK, the next day. Yeah, this would be a great day! Sunshine, warm, and no rockstars to watch out for! And especially no pondering about "should I walk up to them", "what should I say", "did I just make a fool out of myself" etc. Just a quiet day, without thoughts that make my head explode...

I actually wanted to see the impro theater again, but obviously they had given a wrong time, at least there was nobody there (I did catch them lateron that day again though, luckily ). The literature scene wouldn't start before two hours later. So I decided to take the ferry over to Fredrikstad, walk around a bit, find something to eat and just relax with my book. I did take the ferry, I walked around a bit, found out there wasn't really anything to see, didn't find a Kebap place and wasn't really hungry anyway, and decided I could relax at the festival site as well, so I went back pretty soon.

Got off the ferry, and... bumped into Terje + wife. :yikes:

In a way, that made my day. 'Cause that was what had been missing a bit the day before (even though it hadn't really been missing, everybody was so nice the day before as well, but you can never get enough friendly smiles, right? *g*). And at the same time, it ruined it. :frown: Why? Well - back to being on the lookout for rockstars. Back to pondering "argh, did I just make a fool out of myself???" - yep, of course I did. But then, it wasn't my fault, it wasn't me who started the small talk. _I_ would have turned around and run away. But that would have looked even more foolish, I guess...

And yes, I AM bad at small talk, and even worse at small talk in Norwegian. And I wasn't prepared. *g* So I spent the rest of the day thinking about how big a fool I had made out of myself, whether it was my fault or not, and what else I could/should have said. *argh* But then, it was so nice! He could have just walked by...

Anyway. I went on to the literature scene, couldn't concentrate, walked on a bit and stumbled onto the impro theater again, yeah! =:-) Then back to the literature scene to some Swedish poet who was performing his poems to music. SO cool! And I could even understand most of it! Well, another Swedish artist...

The rest of the day was rather uneventful - first I spent some hours reading, then it was time for Katzenjammer, who were great again, and the rest of the bands were just annoying and/or boring. Which means that I went back to the hotel after the first two songs of the headliner - but there were hardly any people there anyway.

So that was it - 12 days in Norway! Now I gotta go home again. I don't want to, but I'll be back.

What's with Swedish bands?!

, , ,

Today was a weird day... Not sure why, but somehow I couldn't get myself to enjoy anything... :frown:

Got up way too early, caught my train (even though there was some confusion about train cars again, but this time, I was allowed on the train, yeah!). Shouldn't have eaten all the yoghurt for breakfast though - so the rest of the train ride was more like "OK, fine, I am gonna stop reading kow, so no, I'm not gonna get sick"... :yuck: Kinda annoying.

Arrived in Fredrikstad and wanted to walk out to the hotel - but after seeing the bridge I was supposed to take and calculating the time it would take me just to find the START of the bridge, I went for a cab instead. Again. Getting lazy and luxurious here... The hotel was okay though, gigantic room, free internet. OK, toilet and showers on the corridor, but then, it's very close to the festival and rather cheap. And if I understood the guy correctly, I'll only have to pay for a single room even though we booked the room as double.

Then I went to check out the festival grounds and was very confused - half of the festival isn't even separated off, so you don't need a ticket to get in. So what exactly did I pay 950 NOK for? Especially, as there's only one or maybe two interesting bands that play on another day but Saturday? And as I'm gonna be here alone after all, there's really no reason why I'm here the whole weekend. :frown: But well, too late.

At least I got rid of the second ticket fairly easily, so then I could start to care for the music. Just that there really wasn't a lot to care for... The first bands were just plain out boring. So after a while, I went back to the hotel and returned for Farmers Market. And they, sorry, were just awful in my opinion. Of course, that was played very well, but it's just annoying to listen to. Except for the last song where they connected lots and lots of well-known melodies, that was really great! But the rest of the concert was boring. And I was terribly cold...

Then it finally got a bit better when I went over to the other stage to see Bøyen Beng. No clue what the lyrics were about, but the music was real old punk, and that was great fun. I was reluctant to return to the other stage - the headliner was some Swedish rapper...

But hey - it turned out the highlight of the day! I had expected something in Eminem style (or whatever), but that was more Seeed combined with The Busters and a bit of Deichkind. There's probably more fitting comparisons, but those are the bands that came to my mind. And all of that in Swedish! Really cool. And the third Swedish band after Håkan Hellström and Bob Hund who made an impression on me this week...

Didn't really care for the "Balkan Beats" party and the band afterwards, so I just stayed to check them out and left. As I said - this day is weird, I don't even really know what I enjoyed and what not. Somehow it all felt a bit dull.

And I'm not quite sure of what to expect of tomorrow... Kaizers AND Skambankt, this is gonna be great. But I hate to go to Kaizers/Skambankt concerts all alone, and that's what I'll have to do now. :frown: And I know already that my minds gonna wander off all day tomorrow. Enjoying the concerts is one thing, but it might be overshadowed by lots of pondering about things like "they walked there and I sat here, oh my god, how stupid" and "gnaah, come over, here I am!!!1". And I hate that. Won't have anybody to distract me from it though... *sigh*

Etter solskinn kommer regnvær

Yep, that's just the way it is - some days of sun, some days of rain... It just sucks if the rainy days are at a festival. Or well - a bit of rain is okay. But if the "bit of rain" means hours and hours of constant pouring, it sucks. :frown:

Well, but I knew right along that a summer vacation in Norway wouldn't mean only sunshine, so I decided to not mind and went out into the rain. I was back at the festival grounds right in time for The Captain & Me - a very good decision! Not only because the rain had stopped for half an hour by then, but mostly because this really is a great band, and the concert was big fun. Then I wandered over to the other stage and watched the concert of The Chap - a very weird band, totally crazy, but it was pretty funny. Didn't stay until the end though, 'cause it started raining again and they didn't "blow me away" so much that I would have cared enough. Instead, I decided to go back to the hotel for a bit, because the next interesting bands wouldn't come on until two hours later.

Not sure if that was a smart decision or not - in any case I was soaked until I was back at the hotel. *grr* OK, I had some time to get dry again, but I was soaked wet again when I arrived back at the festival grounds lateron. :frown:

But: The evening was worth it! First Bob Hund (and yes, I understand why he's compared to Janove Kaizer *g*), then Ash up on the hill (and the way up was not too bad, actually, even though I had expected to slide more than to walk - but I guess Chucks ARE better than Docs in this respect. They get soaked sooner though...), and even though I would have loved to see all of their show, I decided to go down again in time for Katzenjammer - a very good decision, because they were just amazing. And: The rain stopped! The last band of the night and of the festival were the Kaiser Chiefs - a nice conclusion for me, but obviously a lot of people didn't really care for them. Guess Norwegians are too patriotic in this respect. Or maybe their English DOES get worse with too much alcohol after all? I mean, if a band says "we stopped the rain for you!" and there is NO reaction at all? Or when they ask the guy with the laserpointer to point into the sky, and everybody raises their hands? *lol* It was funny though.

And a big applause to the festival organizers - up to now, I never experienced a festival that reacted so quickly to the weather. As soon as the ground became muddy in some place, it was covered with mats. Very effective, very quick, thanks!

So even though the weather was terrible the last day, the festival in itself was just great. I'll be back next year!

Så samles vi på festivalen

Slottsfjell day two - and the best festival weather you could wish for! Bright sunshine, but not too hot, and for some reason, I didn't really get sunburned either. Just perfect!

So I spent all day at the festival - even though the afternoon was a bit slow. "Accidents never happened" sounded fine, Mathias Eick Quartet was really boring, and Xerxes & Bendikbeat sounded like a great band name, but the beginning was boring, so I went downhill to Mathias Eick Quartet, but as they were so boring and the sun was getting hot, I went back up again - and the end of the Xerxes... concert sounded pretty good, actually. Maybe I should have stayed in the first place, but you never know, right?

And I had my book and the sunshine, so I didn't mind at all. That's also the way it continued, with Pony the Pirate, Heroes & Zeros vs. Harrys Gym, Hjaltalin, and The September When. All nice, but not really sticking out. Good for reading and eating!

Then it was time for the highlights - first up: Art Brut. And it was incredible how few people were there to see them. :frown: They tried very hard to get everyone to go along in the beginning, but it felt like they gave up a bit. Too bad, but great fun anyway! I was just a tiny bit angry at Skambankt, 'cause they ran by me just before the Art Brut concert started, so I was distracted, of course. But I managed to force them out of my head when Art Brut came on, hah! :D

Up the hill again, the last few minutes of Soulfly (is there a band that is WORSE than Soulfly?), and then, after deciding that First Aid Kit was nothing I would care for, I settled in front of Kastellscenen with my book, waiting for Skambankt. The concert was amazing (not surprisingly *gg*), you can read more about it here. And it was so funny (or maybe annoying? Honestly, I'm not sure if I was only amused or also annoyed...) how they managed to just not see me during the concert. Not on purpose, by the way! :D I found it very interesting in a way, 'cause there's a big difference between Kaizers and Skambankt here. When Terje plays with Kaizers, he's gonna scan the whole audience right when he comes out. With Skambankt, it's obviously tunnel vision instead. :D Never noticed that before! But it IS kinda funny... and even funnier when they actually DID see me towards the end of the show and some eyes seemed to fall out. *lol*

Anyway, right after Skambankt's show, down the hill again, where Turboneger was playing. Yeah! I was a bit annoyed by the audience, but well, I shouldn't complain - I was late as well and just pushed my way in, so I'm no better... The concert was great fun, but very short, I thought. But it was a great conclusion of a fantastic festival day.

And today it's raining - I already went out for an hour, trying to check out the town - but it seems there's not a lot to check out, and it's raining, so now I'm back at the hotel, blogging about yesterday. *g* Anyway, seems the rain is getting lighter now, and according to the forecast, there will be a short rain pause around 4 pm, so I guess I'll venture out and try to see The Captain & Me lateron - I can always come back and get dry clothes afterwards before the conclusion of the festival with Ash, Katzenjammer, and Kaiser Chiefs!

Hmm, okay... if a festival got "fjell" in the name, don't go there. 'Cause "fjell" means hill, and thus you have to walk uphill forever to get to the festival grounds... And once you are up there, you walk up and down all the time. *argh*

But: If the organizers are smart, you also have a great view at the stage from everwhere, because the area slopes towards the stage. And it's not gonna be so crowded anywhere, because you got a good view at the stage from everywhere!

And yes, the Slottsfjell organizers seem to be smart. At least my first impression of the festival was very positive, even though it is gigantic (for Norway ). But part of that good feeling about the festival was probably also the weather. 25°C and sunshine until 10:00 pm - pretty good, right? Especially when the forecast said "gray and wet". :D So let's just hope that it'll stay like that!

So, who did I see today? Started with the Wombats - nice, but I thought I'd know more songs. Then some food (the first after breakfast, argh) and then Håkan Hellström - never heard of him, but I liked it. Then to the other stage to see Motorpsycho. And I noticed that I had confused them with - all Norwegians will probably kill me for that? - Dreamtheater. Don't ask me why, I don't know more than the name of both bands, and I have a rough idea about the music they play. And Motorpsycho played exactly the kind of music I had associated with them, and I liked it a LOT, so it was good that it wasn't Dreamtheater. *gg* Then I had planned to go by the other stage and down to see Big Bang, but on the other stage, a WEIRD band called Peachcake was playing, and it was incredibly fun. So I stayed - I had been bored by Big Bang before, so I knew I wouldn't miss anything. And Peachcake just blew me away... Then, to conclude, the last few songs of Big Bang were okay, but rather boring. But from far away, the singer reminded me quite a lot of Thees Uhlmann, which made it fun to watch. *g*

OK - I know I didn't post here for ages, but maybe I'll keep it up as a kind of "vacation diary". Or maybe not. Let's wait and see, I won't promise anything...

I know what I did this summer!

, , , ...

Well, actually I already posted a blog entry about my vacation, but hey, if I can win some Opera stuff for posting another one, I'll be glad to write some more. :D

So, my summer. Or rather: My vacation. I doubt anybody would like to read about the part of my summer that actually deserved the name "summer", implying sun and warm weather. Because on the very few sunny days this year, I was working... And as soon as my vacation started, the temperatures dropped about 10 degrees. But okay, I don't want to complain, and also, I should get to the point now. :D

My vacation looked basically like this: Get into the car, drive to the concert (or festival), see some great shows (and some bad/stupid/boring ones as well), meet friends and fellow fans, get back into the car, drive until you are tired, sleep (in the car, of course!), wake up by either people peeing on the car door (if you are parked on a festival camp site) or some granny shouting "LOOK, SHE'S SLEEPING IN THE CAR!!!!" (YES, at least I HAD been sleeping... :faint: ), get up, have a shower at some rest stop, drive to the next venue.
Repeat until you are out of money/vacation days/concert tickets/all of the above.

Not the kind of vacation you would enjoy? Well, I'm a concert junkie. So this IS my vacation. And yes, even though I actually hate festivals and I complain about a lot during my tour, I LOVE it. A great concert can make up for all the shitty stuff that happens. And I did see a lot of great concerts!

So, here's my route:
- I started out at Taubertal festival in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. A very nice, medieval and touristy town, and in the valley right below the castle hill, two stages and about 30000 people. And the camping is on the next hill, which means that after the concerts, you have to walk uphill for half an hour. That gets you sobered up pretty quickly! Playing at the festival were, amongst others of course, Kaizers Orchestra, Die Ärzte, Fettes Brot and The Hives.
- After the festival, I went on to Bonn for another Die Ärzte concert. Which was a bit weird - they had very strict regulations on the noise level, so the concert just wasn't loud enough and felt more like watching TV. But fun anyway!
- The next day I went on to Losheim for another Die Ärzte concert. This time, the location was great, but the concert was strange. The band was in a very weird mood.
- Right after the concert, I drove on to Hasselt in Belgium and Pukkelpop festival. The bands I wanted to see at the festival, Kaizers Orchestra and Disco Ensemble, played between noon and 1 pm... WAY too early, but great concerts, both of them. It just felt a bit stupid to basically be done with the festival at 1.30 pm...
- I didn't stay to check out the Killers (they are okay, but pretty boring, to be honest), but got on the road again, a five hour drive to Highfield festival close to Erfurt... A really nice festival, and the concerts were great! Kaizers Orchestra made a lot of new fans for sure, I saw Henry Rollins again (missed the beginning at Pukkelpop), again The Hives, again no Killers , Madsen, Less than Jake, Beatsteaks and Die Ärzte - but they really sucked that night, to be honest.
- The next day, I went to a little town at the border to the Czech Republic, and because I didn't dare to take my car to Prague (all prejudices, I know, but hey, I don't care if it was a prejudice or not if my car is gone!), I took the train from there. In Prague, I had a whole day to discover the city, and this actually was the only summer day of my summer vacation! 30°C, sunshine, and Die Ärzte fans whereever you looked. In the evening, we went to the concert at a tiny club. A great concert, and nice to see everybody again, even though it felt kind of weird to go to Prague to meet lots of Germans...
- Back to my car the next day and on to the last concert of my tour, again Die Ärzte, this time at the Chiemsee. I really enjoyed that show, even though I missed the first support band Dúné (and I REALLY wanted to see them! :frown:).
- I drove home right after the show, enjoyed sleeping in my own bed and looked forward to the last show of my vacation two days later: A small festival only half an hour away with, amongst others, Disco Ensemble and Madsen.

So, and in case anybody is still reading, let's conclude with a few random facts about my vacation:

- All in all, I traveled almost 3000 km in a fortnight.

- There was a difference of about 30°C between two concerts I saw in a row (Highfield and Prague).

- I had three more bands sign my concertjunkie jacket: Kaizers Orchestra, Madsen, and Disco Ensemble.

- I was sent off the festival grounds during the fourth song that Die Ärzte played at Taubertal festival due to some paranoia regarding photo cameras. Duh, I had a poor pocket camera anyway. But entering again through the main entrance and getting to where I could see something did take some time...

- I met lots of friends at the concerts - but I did the complete trip alone and on my own.

- The nights at Highfield festival were so cold that I was sleeping fully dressed, with a warm sweater, in my sleeping bag, under my thick bed blanket in the car. And I was about to wear gloves and a scarf as well, but I hadn't brought them along. (Well, it was August!)

- I can't wait till October and my next concert trips!

Back home!

, , , ...

So, back from vacation, and all in all, it was great!

But: It is AUGUST right now. Can we agree that August is SUMMER in the northern hemisphere? Yes? So why is it that when I am at festivals, the temperatures drop below 10°C at night? *grr* (Or rather: *brr*)

OK, it wasn't all cold. It was nice and cozy in Prague. Just that in Prague, the concert was inside for a change. I would guess the temperature was somewhere between 40° and 45°C there - thank you very much, and YES, I like it when it is warm, but I'd rather not have a difference of more than 30° between two concerts in a row. So, as a result, I got a cold now.

But anyway, the tour was really fun! With a little downside (also known as "the tour hole") after the last Kaizers concert - okay, it is a bit stupid to think of a tour as a Kaizers tour if it contains 3 Kaizers concerts and 6 Ärzte concerts. But the last two Ärzte concerts were fun again (after two that were just plain out boring), so it turned out okay.

And I still had another festival to look forward to, Mini Rock close to where I live, with Disco Ensemble playing (amongst others of course). And even though this was the only festival with rain (I had been really lucky about rain before!), it turned out very nice. The concert was great, and I got 3/4 of the band to sign my jacket afterwards. Well, okay - Miikka wrote on top of Thees' signature Homer: Doh! , Mikko wrote on top of Bela's signature  , and I'm not sure where Lasse signed (if he signed where I think he did, he managed to write in blue ink with a black ink pen). But well, still nice.

So now it's time to plan the next tour. And RyanAir is so incredibly cheap at the moment that I will probably - for the first time - just buy all flights I MIGHT want to use. But hey, if I can get the flight to Oslo and two possible flights back for just 30 Euro (complete price for ALL flights!), I just can't go wrong...

And I decided to not care if Berlin (the last Kaizers concert of the tour) is gonna be my concert number 100, or 99, or 98, or 101... let's wait and see.

2736 km

, , , ...

Yep, time for vacation!
14 days. 2 offdays. 3 festivals. 3 "main" bands. And 2736 kilometers...

I'm packed, ready to go, and really hyped up. That's gonna be fun! I just hope for really nice weather... cross your fingers!

And here's the route.

My summer
